Universidad de los Andes was founded in 1948, as a result of a project led by Mario Laserna Pinzón, who was 24 years old at the time, and studying Mathematics, Physics and Humanities at Columbia University.

Los Andes was the fi rst non confessional private university in Colombia, independent from all political parties. The institution was founded as a center for studies, research and defense of the truth; its objective was to form a technical elite aimed at closing the gap that existed at the time between Colombia and the world in terms of knowledge and scientifi c progress. Several academics, some of whom were escaping from the war in Europe, came to the University and dedicated their lives to research and teaching. At the same time, Los Andes also established agreements with universities in the United States.

Activities at Los Andes have always been aimed at achieving excellence, and until now, it is the only private university in the country that has received the Institutional Accreditation from the Ministry of National Education for 9 years, granted in June 2005.

Universidad de los Andes, an autonomous and independent institution, fosters pluralism, diversity, dialogue, debate, criticism, tolerance and respect towards its members’ ideas, beliefs and values. The University aims at academic excellence and provides critical and ethical training in order to strengthen the students’ awareness of their civic and social responsibilities, as well as their commitment to analyzing and solving the country’s problems.

In order to achieve its goal, the University has always and continues to develop and put into practice cutting edge methodologies for teaching and research, so that students are the main agents of their training and can solve the problems they face creatively and responsibly. It also fosters a fl exible and interdisciplinary environment which is essential for integrating arts, sciences, technology and humanities, and for stimulating comprehensive education.

The University believes that its educational project requires a highly trained and committed teaching staff, which is a real generator and disseminator of knowledge, and a basic element of institutional strengthening. Therefore, teachers are encouraged to consider their teaching a life project, and in doing so, attain their professional and

personal goals, whilst feeling that they are valued and supported by the students, faculty, staff and society in general.

In addition, the University includes the fi rst private school for public affairs -the Alberto Lleras Camargo Government School, which is named after a former President of the Republic and Rector of this University.Furthermore, Los Andes’ international Summer School program offers its students and participants the opportunity to expand their international perspective by taking these advanced courses in specialized areas taught by teachers graduated from presti-gious universities around the world.

Doctoral programs are the best way to generate and multiply a university’s research capacity, and to obtain results that show a positive impact on several aspects of national life. Currently, Los Andes has 130 research groups registered by Colciencias, which are the support for developing research in Doctoral programs.

The faculties of Engineering, Sciences and Social Sciences—strongly linked with Doctoral programs—publish more than 3 articles a year in international high-impact scientifi c magazines, similar to what is produced by young research universities in developed countries.

Currently, basic investigation at Los Andes is being mainly fi nanced by external sources (foundations, national and international research centers and private donors).

Following its tradition, Los Andes strives to hire teachers with the highest academic standards. Currently, it hires 510 full-time teachers, of which 38% have a Master’s degree and 51% have a PhD (this number exceeds the national standard of 2% for the country, and up to 30% for public universities).

In order to attain this quality, Universidad de los Andes has supported 250 teachers in undertaking their Master’s and PhD studies in different subject areas in renowned foreign universities. Out of these, 104 are still fi nishing their studies and are planning to return within the next two years. The following graph shows the distribution of teachers in the different Faculties.

70% of teaching on undergraduate courses and 90% of teaching on Doctoral courses are undertaken by full-time teachers. 610 adjunct teachers take up the remainingacademic load.

The campus is largely made up of a mixture of remodeled industrial and religious buildings and newly constructed facilities. The infrastructure covers 142,316 sq mts. and includes approximately 116 classrooms, 219 laboratories, a central library and 5 satellite libraries (specialized by areas), where more than 409,700 books are available for students. It also has 26 computer rooms and 6 service units that hire out laptops, offering nearly 2000 computers for student use, which represents 16.5 computers for each 100 students.

The University’s campus is located in Bogota’s historical center, an area that houses most of the city’s buildings of cultural interest, universities, banks and large Colombian companies, the main offi ces of the national and local government, and a variety of cultural meeting places such as libraries, museums, theaters, scientifi c and literary centers, and art galleries, among others.

Also on campus are the following:

In addition to the main campus, the University also has an Internships Center for the Medicine Faculty, located in the Fundación Santa Fe Hospital, in the north of the city. Uniandes and Fundación Santa Fe—one of the most renowned medical institutions in the country—engage in a joint academic venture.

The academic programs are designed and planned for promoting an interdisciplinary and fl exible agenda established in the University’s mission. The interdisciplinary aspect allows the student to take classes from all academic programs offered at Los Andes. This freedom of choice allows the student to design their own curricular program, with the assistance of study counselors in the Students’ Offi ce. The following scheme shows the academic structure at Uniandes, which includes four cycles: a Basic Professio-nal Cycle (CBP in Spanish), which refers to the basic subjects belonging to each program; a Cycle of Elective Courses in Socio-humanistic issues (CSH in Spanish), common to all programs and that offers about 180 courses; a Professional Cycle (CP in Spanish), which includes the main professional subject for each program; and a Professional Complementary Cycle (CPC), which includes subjects from the specifi c program and subjects from other programs.

Uniandes, according to its principles of quality and innovation, has followed its Comprehensive Development Plan (PDI in Spanish), with clear objectives, goals and indicators that have allowed for adequately orienting its efforts towards obtaining the best results in its quest to be an excellent research University.

This has allowed the University to be the only private university in the country that has received Institutional Accreditation for 9 years, granted in June 2005 by the Ministry of Education. Furthermore, although all undergraduate programs are accredited; postgraduate programs are not accredited since the National Government does not yet grant this accreditation.

Los Andes has received international accreditation, such as the one granted to the Faculty of Engineering in 1992 by the Accreditation Board of Engineering and the Triple Accreditation granted to the Faculty of Administration by the European Foundation for Management Development (EQUIIS), the Association of MBAs (AMBA) and the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB).

Universidad de los Andes was included among the 500 best in the world, in a scale developed by Times Higher Education -QS from London, which included more than 25,000 universities and was carried out for the fi fth year in a row.

Los Andes is the only Colombian university included in the scale and is included in a group of 15 Latin American universities, together with 4 from Argentina, 4 from Brazil, 2 from Chile, 2 from Mexico, 1 from Peru and 1 from Uruguay.

In the 2008 ranking undertaken by
