Warm and Wellcome helpfor vulnerable residents
With Norfolk firmly in winter’s icy grip, BrecklandCouncil ward members Elizabeth Gould and WilliamRichmond have been giving ‘Warm Packs’ to vulnerableresidents. These contain essential items for colderweather such as blankets, hot water bottles and gloves.Emergency heating oil, portable heater loans and lowlevel home insulation are also available to vulnerableresidents in the county through the ‘Warm and Well’initiative, thanks to the latest tranche of centralgovernment funding secured by a partnership ofcouncils and health and voluntary organisations.
Elizabeth Gould said “Warm and Well in Norfolk is areally effective and greatly needed initiative that hasalready helped hundreds of people, so it was great newsthat the Partnership has secured funding to roll it outfor a second year. We distributed about 1,000 of theWarm Packs in Breckland last year.
“Keeping warm is essential for the health and wellbeingof our older and more vulnerable residents, but this canbe extremely difficult on a tight budget. The packs area simple but very effective way of providing immediateand practical assistance. This weather has highlightedthe need for us all to keep a check on vulnerable peoplein our community who are living on their own”.
If you know someone in Breckland who would benefitfrom a Warm Pack, please call Principal Housing OfficerGordon Partridge on 01362 656870. Help and adviceavailable on Home Heat Helpline (0800 33 66 99). Thisconnects people on low incomes with support which isworth an average of £160. The help available includesrebates, grants for insulation and new boilers, andadvice on saving energy. For more information visit theNorfolk County Council website (www.norfolk.gov.uk).

The past photograph of the Anchor Hotel was taken in 1965 after extensive improvements. A hostelry by the nameof the Anchor stood on this site from at least the late 1720’s until closure in 2006. The Anchor was probably precededby a much earlier inn known as the Christopher. The Town Bridge was once known as the Christopher Bridge. Past photograph from the David Osborne collection.

Tax ClinicYear-End Tax Planning
The current tax year draws to a close on 5 Apriland now is a good time to start thinking aboutmaking the most of those annual tax-freeallowances says Colin Chamberlain of LovewellBlake LLP Chartered Accountants.
In this article Colin discusses various end-of-tax-year strategies for individuals.
Now that self assessment season has been and gone itis time for me to turn my hand to year-end tax planning. What follows is a selection of some of the more commonstrategies.
Make Use of Your ISA AllowanceAn individual Savings Account (‘ISA’) is a savings accountthat allows the money invested in it to grow tax-free.That is free of income tax and free of capital gains tax, although the value of ISAs are included in your estate forinheritance tax purposes.
For the 2012/13 tax year it is possible to invest up to£11,280 in an ISA, of which up to £5,640 can be a cash-based investment. The balance can be invested in astocks and shares ISA.
Consider topping up your ISA investments to themaximum tax-free amounts.
Pension ContributionsPension investments are highly tax efficient. So muchso in fact that both the current Government and theprevious Government have enacted legislation to reducethe amount that you can pay in to your pension each yearand still receive the relevant tax breaks.
Not only does a qualifying investment in a registeredpension scheme grow free of income tax and capitalgains tax, the pension contribution itself is an allowablededuction from your income for the year. Therefore, fora basic rate taxpayer, a contribution of £1,000 effectivelycosts £800. For a higher rate taxpayer the effective costis £600 and for an additional rate taxpayer the effectivecost is £500. In fact, if your income is in the bracketaround the £100,000 mark, the effective cost of a£1,000 pension contribution could be as little as £400.
Therefore you should consider making an investment intoyour pension scheme but be sure not to invest more thanyour annual allowance which is very broadly the lower of100% of your earnings or £50,000. Note however thatthe rules around annual and lifetime maximumcontributions are far more complex than this and you maywell be in a position to invest more than £50,000 beforethe end of the tax year if you wish to by using unusedrelief from earlier years.
Charitable DonationsIf you are of a philanthropic disposition, charitabledonations made under the Gift Aid Scheme qualify for taxrelief in a similar way to pension contributions. So it ispossible that a gift of £1,000 to your favourite charitymay cost as little as £400.
Therefore you could consider making charitable gifts, particularly if you pay tax at the higher rate or theadditional rate.
Spouses and Civil PartnersYour personal circumstances may mean that you are ableto arrange your affairs so that you can share your incomewith your spouse or civil partner. For example you mightbe running your own company or in business as a soletrader.
You could consider bringing your spouse or civil partnerinto your business so that they can share your taxableincome. This may utilise two instead of one personaltax-free income tax allowances and basic rate and higherrate tax bands. It may also help to avoid the loss of someor all of the child benefit which is now going to be clawed

back through the tax system for some higher earners(see my article in the November 2012 edition of thismagazine).
Transfers of assets between spouses and civil partnerscan also be a useful planning tool for capital gains tax.The initial ‘inter-spouse’ transfer is not subject to capitalgains tax as it is regarded as a ‘no-gain no-loss’ transfer. If the asset is then sold at a gain at some point in thefuture there may then be two lots of capital gains taxannual exemptions available as well as possibly allowingsome of the gain to be taxed at the 18% rate instead ofthe 28% rate. But be careful here, particularly if you areplanning around business assets, as an ill-timed inter-spouse transfer may lead to the loss of the 10% capitalgains tax rate that is afforded to many business assets.
Timing of Asset Sales for Capital Gains TaxEach tax year there is an annual exempt amount ofcapital gains. For 2012/13 this means that capital gainsof up to £10,600 per person are free of capital gains tax.
If your capital gains for the tax year to date are less than£10,600 you might consider selling assets (perhapsshares in an investment portfolio) to fully utilise theannual exempt amount. If you have already used the£10,600 exemption you could consider delaying anysales until after 5 April 2013.
If your combined total income and capital gains is inexcess of £42,475 you pay capital gains tax at 28% onthe sale of some or all assets as opposed to a rate of18%. Therefore you could consider timing your assetsales so that they fall in a tax year where your overallincome and gains are lower so that you pay tax at thelower rate.
Make Use of Your Annual Inheritance Tax AllowancesIf the total value of your estate, after exempt transfers, ismore than £325,000 your executors will usually payinheritance tax on the excess over £325,000 at a rate of40%. The balance can be invested in a stocks andshares ISA.
Usually you would need to survive any gifts by a periodof seven years before the assets gifted fall totally out ofyour estate. However everyone has an annual allowanceof £3,000 which means that they can make total gifts ofup to that amount in the tax year and those gifts fallimmediately out of your estate without having to survivefor seven years. Also if you did not use your annualallowance for the previous tax year it can be carried
forward to the current tax year. So potentially thereforea husband and wife, say, could make gifts to, say, grandchildren totalling up to £12,000 before 6 April2013, saving up to £4,800 in inheritance tax when theydie. They could then give a further £6,000 between themon 6 April (ie just into the new tax year).
In addition to the £3,000 annual allowance you can makeas many small gifts of up to £250 each as you like andalso if you make regular gifts out of surplus income eachyear these will also reduce your inheritance tax estateimmediately.
Enterprise Investment SchemeThe Enterprise Investment Scheme (‘EIS’) gives incometax relief of 30% on qualifying investments in qualifyingtrading companies. Investments under EIS can also givetax-free future capital gains on those investments, adeferral of capital gains tax upon a re-investment into anEIS company, a capital loss relief against income if theinvestments are sold at a loss and the investments arealso likely to attract relief against inheritance tax.
Consideration could be given to making an EISinvestment, although it should be noted that thequalifying conditions are extremely stringent and careneeds to be taken to ensure that you fall within the rules.
There are also exceptionally generous tax reliefs availablefor investments in start-up companies under the SeedEnterprise Investment Scheme (‘SEIS’). The income taxrelief is 50% and, for 2012/13 only, there is full capitalgains tax relief (up to 28%) on qualifying investments.Again, the qualifying conditions are extremely stringentbut it is possible to get total tax relief of up to 78% foran investment under SEIS.
Other Planning PointsNow may also be a good time to carry out a generalreview of your financial affairs – eg inheritance taxmitigation, reviewing the performance of yourinvestments and making sure your will is up-to-date.
ConclusionI have touched upon some of the more common taxplanning ideas in this article. However, tax legislation iscomplex and it pays to work with a professional adviserto avoid the many pitfalls. I would be happy to advise onany tax issues. I can be contacted at:
[email protected] or on 01842 755032.

Winter SkinIt is at this time of year we begin to experiencechanges to our skin. It may appear much drier, become chapped and much more hyper sensitiveto things, especially the lips and hands.
Products and creams that we have used in the pastand been perfectly fine with may now irritate the skincausing inflammation, redness and even itching.
With the holiday season over, all the parties, richerfoods and more alcohol, and probably more hotcaffeine beverages to keep warm together has had adehydrating effect on the skin. Other factors whichcause changes may be triggered by, a change in theenvironment, cold weather, central heating which canall cause dryness. We try to overcome these effects byapplying more moisturiser but this in turn may not bethe best solution as the moisturiser may be too rich, which can make the skin feel congested instead ofwhat we really wanted which was hydration! Also, some moisturisers contain perfumes and or colourswhich then makes it become itchy and or red andeasily irritated.
For maximum results keep it simple, try hydrating, soothing spritzers which contain humectants to bindand attract moisture to the skin, and calming extractsof licorice, cucumber and raspberry extract. They arereally easy to use can be applied several times duringthe day, also through make up and they will help createa protective shield against assault from theenvironment which can lead to irritated, dry, tight orsensitised skin.

Fairwell Doctor PiccaverDear all, As most of you know, I have departed the GroveSurgery for pastures new and I would like to express mythanks and gratitude to all those I've met over the past 21/2 years.
Thanks to my patients, who have kept me busy, challenged, and above all for their...well...patience.
Thanks to the community staff, radiologists, physio's,mental health workers, occupational therapists, out-of-hours staff, palliative care teams, midwives, healthvisitors, school nurses, social workers, and especiallydistrict nurses for inextinguishable, unremitting goodhumour, in spite of dealing with some of the most terriblethings life can throw at people. Have I missed anyoneout? I hope not.
Over the past 2 1/2 years, I've done my best to try andhelp the people of the town.
Hopefully by now, we should all realise we don't needantibiotics for coughs and colds, that we all have a roleto play in staying healthy, and that drinking too much, smoking, not exercising if you can, and living offtakeaways are all bad ideas.
As a healthcare professional, our role is to give peoplewhat they need, and advise them on how to live a healthylife. Unfortunately this sometimes leads to conflict. Wemay not have all the answers, but we've got a few goodideas. I may never truly save a life, or cure an illness, butI like to think I've made people feel better.
As a doctor, we will never get things right all the time. Wewill miss things, big things, and will feel terrible for it. Butalas, we are but human, and like our patients, are far frominfallible.
Working in healthcare in this town is hard... about thehardest thing I've done. Sixteen hour days, constant,
never-ending demand takes it's toll. We would love tooffer same day appointments to all of our patients, regardless of the problem, big or small. But we can't.There are not enough hours in the day, or doctors in thetown, to meet the demand. I have had to deal with trulyhorrific situations, on a daily basis, and do things I'd neverdreamt of, let alone been trained to do.
There is a lot of need in this town.
So as I leave for pastures new, I wish you all a fondfarewell. But next you book an appointment, justunderstand what happens the other side of the desk, howhard the people in this town work, for you. We are hereto help you. Stay well. Dr. Matt Piccaver.

We have started the New Year with a happy story. A littlecat that had been missing for 4 months has beenreunited with her owner because she is micro chipped. We also have a 10yr old cat called Tabitha who is microchipped but her owners details have not been updatedso despite going to the old address and knocking onneighbours doors we can’t trace her and reunite her withher cat. She was found in Mundford and originated inMildenhall so if you know anything about Tabitha pleasecontact us. It is so worthwhile to have your pet microchipped but also please remember to keep detailsupdated.
We see the cruelty and compassion in this work. Crueltywhere cats have litter after litter until their little bodiesare worn out, just so their owners can sell the kittens andwhen they can’t sell them they want us to take them in.Cruelty where cats are abandoned, the lucky onescoming to us emaciated, the unlucky ones starving todeath on the streets or taken into the woods anddumped. Compassion where members of the public arefeeding strays, some people having fed a succession ofstrays as some cats have a knack of finding people whowill help them. Compassion when people walking in thewoods find a box of kittens and take them home andcontact us.
There are over one million unwanted cats in the UK. Oneadult cat can be responsible for 20,000 descendants.Lets make 2013 the year where people bother to gettheir cats neutered, male and female, both are important.Kittens are the unwanted cats of the future.
This is little Tabitha, who is looking for her owner but ifnot claimed will be looking for a loving home for life.

William Nunn, chairman of MTF said: “Moving ThetfordForward’s funding scheme is there to support worthwhile
initiatives that will benefit communities. It’s great to seeso many community projects being funded, big and small, this year and encourage people to think how the moneycould be spent on projects that will give a longer lastinglegacy.
"There is a great deal of community work that goes on inlocal communities that often goes unnoticed. There arelots of small volunteer led projects that could do withsupport in providing the vital services they do in their areaand MTF is happy to offer its support where it can.

If you have beeninjured in an accidentthat was not your fault,do you need a solicitor? There are concerns atthe moment about agrowing practice where
those injured in accidents are being contacteddirectly by the insurer of the person thatcaused the accident and offeredcompensation, before they are able to contacta solicitor for independent advice or obtainmedical evidence to establish the extent oftheir injuries. There are reports that insurershave exerted undue pressure on people tosettle claims. Accepting offers made directlyfrom insurers is extremely risky as it can leadto inadequate compensation.
In some cases the insurers of the person whocaused your accident will offer you a solicitorto represent you, but would you really wantyour solicitor appointed by your opponent? Will those solicitors be specialists? Will theyknow the local medical services available? Willthey be independent from the insurer who hasappointed them? Many people end up under-compensated or unhappy with the way theirclaim is handled by these solicitors.
An injury can have a dramatic effect on yourhealth and your finances. It is not uncommon
to have to take time off of work which canlead to financial problems and difficulty payingthe mortgage or rent. Recovery does notalways occur quickly so swift investigation andtreatment of injuries is often necessary.Where injuries are on-going they may have along-term impact on your finances.
An independent, specialist solicitor can assistyou in addressing all of these problems. Yoursolicitor should aim to secure some moneyup-front to address the immediate financialconsequences of the injury, they should seekto arrange treatment at an early stage and, ultimately, they should ensure you receive theright amount of compensation. A significantpart of our work involves giving people secondopinions in situations where they have hadnon-specialist solicitors appointed. One clientwas offered £3,500 which she felt pressuredto accept. We took the case on and sheended up with over £50,000. Another clientwas advised to accept an offer of £210,000.He was unhappy and came to us and we gothim £625,000.
Taylor Vinters specialise in all types of personalinjury claims and we are a top-rated practice inLegal 500. If you or anyone you know hasbeen injured as a result of an accident, contactMick Upton on 01223 225 205 for a free, noobligation consultation.

The Thetford Players have been dashing around fasterthan Father Christmas and his sleigh over the last coupleof months thanks to panto season, starting with aperformance at the Christmas lights switch on inThetford, in which Aladdin (Tyler Curtis) and PrincessJasmine (Tina Matthews) wooed crowds with theirrendition of “A whole new world” and the Genie (KateJones) appeared in a puff of smoke from the magic lampto 'shazam' the Christmas lights on whilst othermembers of the Players sang Christmas songs in Englishand Spanish, accompanied by a 'flash mob' of zumbadancers and singers from Discord, who were scatteredsurreptitiously amongst the crowds.
Another very successful craft fair at the Carnegie Roomtook place the following day which included guestappearances from some of the cast of Aladdin. ThePlayers quarterly craft fairs not only raise funds for thegroup but also for its local 'Charity of the Year' (theRiversdale Centre). The next craft fair is on the 30thMarch 2013.
Princess Jasmine made a guest appearance at RaleighInfant School at the beginning of December as the“Community Reader” in afternoon assembly, answeringquestions from children about panto and then reading aspecially-selected storybook to the children.

On the theme of schools, the Players annual pantoschool colouring competition took place with sevenschools in and around Thetford participating and awinner selected from each, receiving a family ticketto see Aladdin at a performance of their choice.
The Methodist Church Christmas Tree Festival onceagain this year saw a Thetford Players contribution– a Peking-style Christmas Tree that was decoratedwith Aladdin lamps made by children at the Playerscraft fair held a few days earlier.
The final crescendo to the panto season was ofcourse the Players very successful run of Aladdin atthe Carnegie on the 10th, 11th and 12th January,written/produced by Bob Waple and directed by JoCooper and Jo van der Hulks. Of the four shows, three were sell outs and the opening night sold moretickets than any previous first night! Cheesy jokes,sweet-throwing, audience participation, catchy songsand dance moves, flashes, hisses, boos and cheersfilled each performance. The sets looked amazing, the costumes were fantastic and the new sound andlighting system was awesome. Everyone involved -backstage and cast - did an amazing job at turningthe Carnegie Room into Peking for a couple of hours! So what's next? Why not visit:www.thetfordplayers.co.uk and find out more aboutthe Thetford Players, including details about our newproduction, “Musical Mania”, coming to the CarnegieRoom in April 2013! May I take this opportunity onbehalf of the Players to say a huge thank you to allof our supporters and sponsors.

For many years the historic form of ThetfordWarren Lodge has lain hidden by the trees andscrub growing un-managed around it.
As one of only two remainingWarren Lodges in the Brecksit tells of a time when warrenlodges stood as sentinelsover the vast rabbit warrens;heathland of low lyinggrasses and herbs spreadingout around them for miles.Over 26 warrens existed inthe Brecks during theMiddle-Ages. Many were
owned or leased by senior clergy or nobility, such asThetford Lodge that was leased to the Abbot of ThetfordPriory. The original warren extended to the Little OuseRiver in the north, the A11 to the east, Olleys Farm in thesouth and west as far as Weatherhill Oaks where itbordered Downham High Warren with its lodge whereHigh Lodge now stands.
Producing up to 30,000 rabbits a year from each warren, they provided essential meat and supplies to the fur tradeof London and Europe. The felt and fur trade of Brandonat one time employed over 500 people and when the railnetwork reached Thetford the train carried over 200dozen rabbits to London every day, becoming known asthe ‘Bunny Train’.
Thetford Warren specialised in producing silver-greyrabbits and their nibbling produced vast areas of low lyingopen grass heaths, disturbed and bare ground, perfectfor the specialised Brecks plants for which the area isnationally significant. 12,845 plant and animal specieshave been recorded in the Brecks of which 2,149 are ofnational conservation concern.
Much of what we value today for conservation in the UKhas been significantly influenced by man over millenniaand if we do not continue to intervene we would losemany of the species we recognise and value. The lowlying species such as Breckland Thyme, only found in theBrecks, and the rich lichen and moss heath that still holdson here are at risk of being lost.
Thanks to a Higher Level Stewardship Grant from NaturalEngland, The Brecks Partnership, working with BrecklandDistrict Council who lease the site, will this winter, commence a habitat restoration programme. This will helpto provide the best conditions for the Brecks heath thathas been lost from the site due to the unchecked growthof trees and scrub. As much of the tree and scrub coverwill be removed as is possible. Not only will this help savethe rare Brecks plants and animals, but also set thewarren lodge in at least part of its historical context.
Photos from 1930’s show the Brandon Road without atree to be seen on either side, as it would have been fromthe Middle Ages when ‘warrening’ was at its peak. Thelodge would have had uninterrupted views across thewhole warren from its high point (yes the Brecks is notflat!) and it was possible to see Ely Cathedral from theroof of the lodge before the forest was planted. With thelack of invasive tree and scrub the heath would have heldan amazing array of plants and associated animals.

Amnesty end of year letter2012 kept Amnesty International busy working to protecthuman rights. Whilst we started the year with hope forfledgling democracies like Libya and Egypt – at the yearend there were protestors in Tahrir Square once more.
Meanwhile, in Syria the death toll since the start of theuprising is reported to have reached 40,000 - many ofthem civilians, and whilst the opposition is nowrecognised by the international community, the bloodshedcontinues with no obvious endpoint on the horizon.
There are other threats around the world, such as theproposed “kill the gays” bill in Uganda, the alarmingarrest and prosecution of journalist Kostaas Vaxeanis inGreece for reporting on corruption, and the continuedhorrific trend of people setting themselves on fire inprotest over China’s policy towards Tibet.
As the curtain came down on the year, it was a relief thatMalala Yousafsi, the 14-year old girl shot by the Talibanfor speaking out about the right to education of girls inPakistan, is recovering well.
But there are countless prisoners around the worldlanguishing in prisons who need our help. They include
two of the three members of Russian punk band PussyRiot, sentenced to two years for singing a song whichcriticised President Putin.
India and Japan both resumed the use of the deathpenalty after years of having unofficial moratoriums, butthere was good news too; Connecticut was the 17thAmerican state to vote to end the use of the deathpenalty.
We came tantalisingly close to getting a global arms tradetreaty which would regulate the movement of weaponsaround the world, stemming human rights abusersgetting their hands on them. Amnesty is hopeful wemight secure the treaty we want at negotiations in March.
Please consider joining Amnesty to help us fight for rightsfor all.

Hard Times: Life for the Poorof Thetford 100 years ago
The fascinating new ‘Hard Times’ exhibition at theAncient House Museum looks at life for the poor ofThetford around 100 years ago. Collections Officer, TimThorpe explains how he put the exhibition together.
“Edwardian Britain is sometimes described as a ‘goldenage’ but poor living conditions for many people hadchanged little since the early Victorian period. Insanitaryslum housing, disease, poor working conditions, lowwages, and the fear of destitution and the workhousewere the norm for a large proportion of the town’sinhabitants. In 1901 for example, Thetford had a higherdeath rate than 22 of England’s largest towns and evenby 1929 the death rate was still well above the average.
The displays examine the town’s slum housing andinadequate drains which led to outbreaks of deadlycholera and typhoid epidemics in the late 19th century.
Dr Stevens who was asked to investigate the sanitationof the town in 1868 discovered the wells contaminatedwith sewage from nearby cesspits. Thetford continued tosuffer from outbreaks of disease until the first propermodern sewer system was completed in 1952.
Working conditions for the poor are also looked at,particularly the awful conditions for the workers in Fison’sFertiliser Works and the Tannery in the town centre. Those who lost their jobs or fell ill would end up in theThetford Union Workhouse, the feared last resort for thedestitute. Objects and photographs from the Workhouseare on display.
Over a third of women were in domestic service in 1911.Life for servants ‘below stairs’ is looked at.
A fascinating 1899 photographic album of ‘ThetfordCharacters’ taken by Mr Chalk of Bury Road is on display. It shows street snaps of local characters including MrKeldale the cow herder, Dick Butters, who committedsuicide in the river, Billy Bunn the wart charmer, Mr Diverof the Salvation Army, and Arthur Lockwood who died inthe Workhouse.
The economic depression of the 1920s led to thegovernment setting up work camps for the unemployedin Thetford Forest at West Tofts and High Lodge.Hundreds of men worked in these ‘Hardening Centres’in return for their dole money. For the town’s poor, soupkitchens were set up in Thetford Town Hall in 1922.”

Youth Award to ThetfordChristian Based Project
Thetford Cycling Forward, a community project led byPastoral Outreach Worker Carl Clark, was recentlyawarded the 2012 Bernard Matthews Youth Award forthe Environment to add to its increasing collection ofhonours.
At a prestigious awards ceremony held at the Open Youthvenue in Norwich, youth volunteer Joshua Muradaccepted the 2012 Bernard Matthews Youth Award forthe Environment, in association with the EDP, on behalfof community project Thetford Cycling Forward.
The environmental award, which comes with a £1000contribution, follows three years of hard work recyclinghundreds of bicycles that would have otherwise gone intolandfill. The Thetford Cycling Forward initiative began atthe Bishop's CEVA Primary School on Thetford’s AbbeyEstate by Pastoral Outreach Worker Carl Clark. Carlcontinues to run the award winning community projectbased on Christian values.
Bicycles which would otherwise have gone to waste aregiven to families without bicycles who are referred to thegroup by support agencies.
Carl Clark explains: “We have now recycled over 400bicycles and donated them to families who are strugglingor just in need of a blessing, with several hundred otherbikes repaired in our community at no cost. Over 3000people have used the project since it opened in January2010. From a health perspective, it is exciting to seeentire families out cycling for the first time.
“Each time we have struggled we have handed it over tothe Lord, listened and then God poured his blessings onthe group, which can be as small as four or five youth,
or in the summer as many as 100 youth helping to repairand recycle bicycles”.
For his work on the project Carl came runner up in aVolunteer of the Year Award 2011 from Sustrans (GreenTransport Category). The project was also awarded aHelping Hands Award for Community Work in 2011 andthe Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum at Thetford’s ShadwellStud has awarded the project a grant for tools andequipment.
Carl said: “Shadwell Stud are a blessing on ourcommunity for helping local community groups andschools in the area with support and grants. It is greatthat Christians and the Islamic community help andsupport each other, which is a success story not oftenreported in mainstream media.”
Joshua Murad who accepted the Bernard MatthewsAward on behalf of Thetford Cycling Forward has beenvolunteering with the project from the start. Carl said:“He is an absolute pleasure to have had working with meand mentoring others. Josh gives 100% to whatever hedoes with a smile!” Carl was unable to attend the awardsceremony following a serious illness.
Thetford Cycling Forward have now teamed up with"CrackOn" a charity aimed at getting young people intotraining and back into work. Over the past year MarkByford who runs the charity has donated safetyequipment which has been very well received by theyoung people. The new venture will see bicycles beingdonated to Thetford Cycling Forward as well, we nowoperate from the Bishop's School again as we did in thepast and have storage for up to 100 bicycles and sparesacross Thetford from sponsors.
I would like to thank everyone who has supported us inthe past and look forward to an exciting future.
Cllr Carl Clark

Gardeners & Allotment Holders of ThetfordHi Gardeners! I hope you all are well and have gotover the bad weather in January, all that snow andthen the big thaw.
I hope you have not had too much damage on yourallotments and gardens, I lost my cabbage cage, withthe weight of the snow on it collapsed and is brokenbeyond repair.
The big clean up begins for another year...I noticed that my garlic is up, so hopefully there will be agood crop in August.
Now is the time to get your garden ready for this yearscrop, weather permitting, dig in manure for yourpotatoes. Your onions, shallots, parsnips can be plantedthis month and broad beans can go in now if you did notplant September, October time.
Next I will be planting in my nursery, leeks, summercabbages, red cabbage, and cauliflowers. Once theyhave grown to a manageable size transplant them towhere you want them to go. As it is still early in the yearplease keep an eye out for any frosts that could still catchus out.
In January you should have started to feed the fish in thepond as they are now waking up, also all the birds in thegarden will probably need a helping hand food wise.
The house plants will need some water now, but makesure it is just a little at a time as not to over water them,as they have been all winter without water they couldbecome water logged and we do not want that do we?
All my orchids are in flower at the moment as is my aloevera, these are house plants that do not need too muchwater at all.
Well that is all for this month. Remember if anyone outthere would like to join Thetford Garden and AllotmentClub please do contact me on:
07867 974 544 [email protected].
We have a lot of things going on, like yearly trips and talksevery month. The next will be February 28th at the UnitedReformed Church, Earls Street, at 7.30pm. Everyone iswelcome, even if you are not a member.
We hold three shows a year, the Spring show, Summershow and of cause the Annual show, which anyone canenter, just watch this space. bye for now Yvonne

Saying No to tomatoes couldhelp you Stop Smoking
Avoiding tomatoes and changing the way you think aboutstopping could be the key to a healthier future for Norfolksmokers.
Ian Chase is the representative of the National SmokingCessation Institute for Thetford and surrounding area. The NSCI is a Brighton-based organisation that hashelped thousands of smokers to stop smoking since itwas founded more than 20 years ago. As part of theirresearch they found that for some people tomatoesseemed to increase the craving for cigarettes during thefirst days after their clients stopped smoking. Thehumble tomato belongs to the Nightshade family ofplants of which tobacco is also a member. It seems thatif tomatoes are eaten in any form after stopping smokingthe body can confuse the tomato molecules with tobaccomolecules. This confusion actually keeps the personaddicted to nicotine and although this doesn’t happen toeveryone the NSCI recommend that smokers who arestopping should avoid tomatoes in their diet for four daysafter they stop.
Another important aspect of stopping smoking is tochange the way you think about stopping. Some peoplesay that they are quitting smoking or they are giving-upsmoking. The terms ‘quitting’ and ‘giving-up’ are bothseen by the mind as negative. To use terms such asthese is unhelpful as they cause the person to think theyare a quitter or they will be losing something of value. Ifinstead you believe you are becoming a non-smoker thenyou are welcoming this positive change into your life andthis change in attitude will help with your success.
Most smokers have a fear of stopping and this is to beexpected. Some smokers have never been non-smokingadults and such a change can cause them some fear.Ian works with his clients to reduce their fears and helpsthem to change their thought patterns in order for themto positively welcome becoming a non-smoker ratherthan fearing the change. For further information aboutstopping smoking please contact Ian on 07511 528738or email him at [email protected] for a freeconsultation
