About the Festival
• Sally Ride Science Festivals are designed to encourage 5th-8th grade girls in science.
• An inspiring talk given by astronaut Ellen Ochoa • Discovery Workshops for 5th-8th grade girls, given by
local scientists and engineers(examples include chemists, veterinarians, microbiologists, and others)
• Workshops for parents and teachers on ways to support students' interests in science and math
• A Street Fair with booths, hands-on activities, food, and music
Event Schedule• 11:00am-12:45pm Check-in, eat lunch, enjoy the Street Fair
• 1:00-2:00pm Featured Talk by astronaut Ellen Ochoa
• 2:00-2:15pm Break (assemble and go to workshops)
In the afternoon, girls go to 2 workshops, while adults go to one longer workshop.
• 2:15-3:00pm Discovery Workshop #1
• 3:00-3:25pm Break (assemble and go to workshops)
• 3:25-4:10pm Discovery Workshop #2
• 4:15pm End of the Festival
Call for Presenters• Presentations for the girls or
parents/educators– 45 minute
presentation/hands-on activity for 5th-8th grade girls• e.g. Discuss your career and
having the girls experiment with water bottle rockets
• Either present at 2:15-3:00pm Discovery Workshop #1 or 3:25-4:10pm Discovery Workshop #2
– 1½ hour presentation for parents or educators• e.g. Discuss an activity that will
help engage the girls in science/technology
Call for Volunteers
• Shift #1 (9:30am - 2:15pm)set-up and helping out with street fair exhibitors
• Shift #2 (12:30pm - 4:15pm)“Mother and Father Duckies” that take the girls to and from their workshops
• Shift #3 (9:30am - 4:15pm)the all day volunteers will get a morning assignment and also lead the kids to and from the workshops
