About the course Applied Science is an exciting and inspiring subject best suited to those who are passionate about the world of Science. Our BTEC National Applied Science is a practical and theoretical subject covering aspects from all areas of Science. During the course you will learn how to follow correct laboratory procedures that are the basis for analysis in a range of occupations related to the chemical industry, medicine and pharmaceuticals, education, forensic investigation and many more. The course also includes a field trip as well as relevant laboratory work experience, including a self reflection of personal and practical skills. The BTEC L3 Applied Science National Extended Certificate follows the Edexcel specification. The syllabus is wide ranging and challenging covering the key concepts in a range of Science topics which are assessed by a range of internally assessed assignments and some externally assessed units. The subject is grounded in practical activity to develop and apply the concepts learnt through a variety of topics. Students master a wide range of techniques including dissection skills and management of structured investigations. There is a strong element of on-going practical assessment which can support the theory taught in lessons; students will undertake a period of laboratory work experience. The BTEC Level 3 Applied Science studies conceptualised A-level Science which follows on from GCSE Combined Science and high level BTEC Level 2 Principles and Applications of Science. It has to be acknowledged that Science is one of the most challenging subjects. Candidates with a strong Science based background and passion do well and the course is best supported by other technical subjects such as English, Maths, Design and Technology, BTEC L3 Sport and the other Sciences. Applied Science is strongly recommended for students considering careers in engineering, biochemistry, midwifery, nursing, forensics, physiotherapy or other Science associated careers. Applied Science is also useful for careers further afield due to its practical nature and the key skills that students will acquire will no doubt be critical to future success. The course is taught over two years and is equivalent in size to one A Level. There are 4 units, of which 3 are mandatory and 2 are externally assessed. Mandatory content (83%). External assessment (58%). The three mandatory units are: 1 Principles and Applications of Science (externally assessed) - YR12 2 Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques - YR 12 3 Science Investigation Skills (externally assessed) - YR 13 The optional unit can be chosen from the following options: - YR 13 8 Physiology of Human Body Systems (Selected this year) 9 Human Regulation and Reproduction 10 Biological Molecules and Metabolic Pathways 11 Genetics and Genetic Engineering 12 Diseases and Infections 13 Applications of Inorganic Chemistry 14 Applications of Organic Chemistry 15 Electrical Circuits and their Application 16 Astronomy and Space Science The styles of external assessment used for qualifications in the Applied Science suite are: examinations – learners take the same assessment at the same time, with a written outcome under supervised conditions. set tasks – learners take the assessment during a defined window under limited control through completion of practical and vocational tasks.
