A LETTER FROMTHE CHAIRMAN

Dear Friends,

I am pleased to present the 2007-2008 Annual Report of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale. Information found in this report represents the organization’s ongoing efforts to provide quality youth development programs to children and teens located throughout the Northeast Valley. We reached a new milestone of serving over 16,000 youth this year. This number reflects the need our community has to provide boys and girls a safe, positive and supervised place for them to go and grow. Club programs are offered in a supportive environment and are based upon physical, emotional, cultural and social needs, and designed to encourage critical thinking and expand areas of interest. In this challenging economy, it is our mission to be fiscally responsible without impacting the access of these critical resources needed by each child we serve everyday.

The year kicked-off with the grand opening of our ninth clubhouse. The Vestar Branch is a 27,000 square-foot facility and provides the opportunity to serve more than 8,300 families around the Desert Ridge community in northeast Phoenix. The building of this facility was made possible though the support and generosity of several businesses and individuals including Vestar Development, Toll Brothers, Thunderbirds Charities, and the Lamb Family.

Other highlights for the year include the successful planning and celebration of our three signature events: Uncorked & Unplugged in October; Dan Majerle Celebrity Invitational in February; and Celebrate Youth Dinner & Auction in March which included the announcement of our 2008 Youth of the Year – Katie Loker from the Virginia G. Piper Branch.

Many of our members won state, regional and national competitions in our five core programs areas. Additionally, three staff members were honored with the “Distinguished Professional Award” at the Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s national conference. Today, our Club is second in the nation in the number of staff earning this honor which is given based on work history, professional development, training experiences and education. This demonstrates our pledge to provide the best resources to our kids.

We are fortunate to have the support of corporations, foundations, government agencies, individuals, and countless others who contribute to the welfare of children and teens through their generous investment. Without you, we would not be able to continue our commitment of service focused on developing life-enhancing skills and nurturing self-esteem.

I hope this report assures you that the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale is an organization worthy of your investment. With your continued support, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale will continue to put the needs and development of our youth first. If you have any questions or suggestions, please contact the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale at [email protected] or call 480.860.5520.

Sincerely,

Mike ThorellChairman of the BoardBoys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale

On March 29, 2008, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale lost a dear friend and longtime Board member, Geno Ori. No one loved the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale more than Geno. His involvement started as a parent as his three sons – Todd, Scott, and Rick – were members. He dedicated more than 35 years to the organization serving various roles as a member of the Board of Directors, Board of Governors, and as a Foundation Trustee. He received several honors and accolades for his steadfast work on the Clubs’ behalf. In addition, Geno volunteered for numerous Club committees and events. During the San Francisco Giants spring training season, you could find Geno at the stadium helping out in the team shop where sales proceeds benefit the Club. Geno’s philosophy was always “kids first.” He was an inspiration to all who were blessed to know him. Although Geno is no longer here, his legacy will continue to live on in the children the Club serves everyday.

GENO ORI MEMORIAL

Katie Loker, an 18-year-old senior at Desert Mountain High School and member of the Virginia G. Piper Branch, was honored as the 2008 Youth of the Year for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale. The announcement took place at the Club’s annual Celebrate Youth Dinner & Auction on March 29, 2008 at the Scottsdale Resort & Conference Center. Katie was one of eight finalists from our branches selected based on their dedication to the Club, community and family, academic performance, moral character, life goals, poise and public speaking ability. The Youth of the Year program has been an integral part of the Boys & Girls Clubs for over 50 years and is the highest honor given to members of the organization. Katie went on represent the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale at the state level, with the opportunity to advance to the regional and national competition. “We are thrilled and very proud of Katie,” said Katie’s parents Bill and Connie Loker. “We attribute a lot of her accomplishments and leadership abilities to the Club which has been a big part of her life since the age of eight.”

“It is hard for me to put into words what a strong influence the Club programs and people has had on my life. At the Club, there has always been someone there for me to look up to and find direction.” – Katie Loker
