About the Artist: Larry Vigon

T here can be something quite magical about the medium of art journals.Perhaps it is the mystery generated by a closed diary that cannot be

read unless pried open, unleashing potent images and text. The spontaneityof gesture, conceptual seeds, observations in the spirit of faithful notation,and personal memory inhabit pages, often in privacy.

Throughout the ages, the world has been privy to the sketchbooks ofLeonardo da Vinci and Frida Kahlo, the poetic illuminations of William Blake,and Gauguin’s Tahitian journals. They have all made their way into the world,revealing the stirrings of the creative process. It is this sense of cloaked dis-covery that brings us invaluable pieces to the psychic puzzle.

For over 17 years, Larry Vigon has logged his dreams and paintedtheir images. Within each journal one can feel the freedom and interactionto record what has emerged without any editing or artistic restraint. Oppo-site handwritten accounts of unconscious material, cartoon-like figures min-gle with ancient symbols, souvenirs from trips and collective icons. Bodiesappear and deconstruct in a myriad of styles. Devils and haunting faces re-sembling Rorschach blots rise up out of darkness, daring to be encountered.Initially these books were meant to be explored within analytical work. How-ever, Vigon gradually felt the desire to share them in a more public way. In2006, Dream: A Journal by Larry Vigon, composed of selections from overnine volumes of his work, was published by the Quantuck Lane Press, NY.

What Larry Vigon brings consciously to this process is his skill as agraphic designer for over 35 years. His experience has included producingrecord album and CD packaging for such artists as Frank Sinatra, FleetwoodMac, Eric Clapton, and Bonnie Raitt as well as corporate identity and designfor IBM, DreamWorks, Epson, Sony and the Los Angeles Opera. These en-deavors have brought him international recognition such as the New YorkArt Director’s Gold Award for Collector’s Photography magazine. Recently,

he and his wife Sandra relocated to London after spending 2 years inItaly.

Apropos of his own interest, Vigon has been instrumental in bringingC. G. Jung’s Red Book to the publisher W.W. Norton & Company, NY. He willserve as art director, supervising all design and production for this project,which will be released later in 2009.

Larry Vigon’s persevering commitment and imaginative renderingsmight be likened to that of an alchemist whose dedication to transformation,simply chronicled and illustrated, is evidence of the power of the psyche atwork.
