About the Institute

In 1956, the United Nations, the Government of India and the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust, jointly

established the Institute to serve as a regional center for teaching, training and conducting research

in the area of population studies in the ESCAP region. Prior to 1970, the IIPS was popularly known

as Demographic Training and Research Centre (DTRC). The Institute was declared Deemed

University on August 15, 1985. The Institute is an autonomous institution under the administrative

control of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. The Institute offers

academic courses in population sciences to train students in demography, population, health and

social sciences. Training programmes and consultancy services to government and non-

governmental organizations and other academic institutions are also part of the activities of the

institute. The Institute also undertakes large-scale nationwide demographic and health surveys. IIPS

has helped in building a nucleus of professionals in the field of population and health in various

countries in the ESCAP region. During the past 60 years, students from 42 different countries of

Asia and the Pacific region, Africa, and North America have been trained at the Institute. Many, who

are trained at the Institute, now occupy key positions in the field of population and health in

governments of various countries, universities and research institutes, as well as in reputed national

and international organizations.

Objectives of the Institute

To train persons from India and other countries in the field of population studies, public health

and development issues.

To undertake scientific research on population problems which are of special importance to India

and other countries.

To collect, organize and disseminate demographic information about the population of India and

other countries of the world.

To provide services of research, evaluation, training, consultation and guidance related to

population problems to government departments, public corporations or private establishments.

To undertake, organize and facilitate study courses, conferences, lectures, seminars and the like

to promote the aforesaid objectives.

To undertake and provide for publication of journals and research papers, books and to maintain

libraries, data centre and information service in furtherance of the objectives of the institute.

Vision and Mission of the Institute

Vision: "To position IIPS as a premier teaching and research institute in population sciences

responsive to emerging national and global needs through high-impact, cutting edge and

multidisciplinary research, teaching and training".

Mission: "The Institute strives to be a centre of excellence on all population and health issues

through high quality scientific research and teaching. We achieve this by (a) creating highly

competent professionals, (b) generating and disseminating scientific knowledge and evidence, (c)

collaborating and exchanging ideas with other institutions, and (d) undertaking advocacy and

awareness programmes”.

Functions of the Institute

Research

Apart from the teaching activities, the Institute also conducts a large number of research projects on

various aspects of population and health. The Institute also undertakes evaluative studies and large-

scale surveys. Emphasis is given on studies related to inter-relationship of various social and

economic variables of the components of population change such as fertility, mortality, migration

and health complexities. Institute had conducted many important surveys like National Family Health

Survey (NFHS), District Level Household Survey (DLHS), Concurrent Evaluation of National Rural

Health Mission (NRHM), YOUTH in India, Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS India), Research

and Intervention in Sexual Health: Theory to Action (RISHTA Project), SWABHIMAAN Project,

Study on Global Ageing and Adult Health (SAGE) and Longitudinal Ageing Study in India (LASI).

The research projects of the Institute are funded by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare,

Government of India and also by the State Governments, World Bank, United Nations Population

Fund, UNICEF, World Health Organization, International Labour Organization and other

Governmental and Non-Governmental organizations.

Consultative Services

The Institute provides consultancy services and undertakes special studies on problems related to

population at the request of the Government, the United Nations and other specialized agencies.

Given the expertise of the staff in various areas of population, health, research methodology, etc.,

an active effort is being made to let the organizations which need short term consultancy services,

know about the availability of persons.

Programmes and Courses Offered

M.A. /M.Sc. in Population Studies

Master of Science in Biostatistics and Demography

Master of Population Studies (MPS)

Master of Arts in Population Studies (MA) (Distance Learning)

Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) in Population Studies

Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) in Biostatistics and Demography

Key Components of the Courses

Thesis, term paper and assignments are an integral part of the evaluation process of different

programs offered in IIPS. They are important and necessary value additions to the students'

understanding of the subject. Assignments and presentations have 20% weightage in the overall

evaluation of performance during the course.

Application of Theory

Application of an appropriate analytical framework, along with empirical evidence, is a sure test of

the students' understanding of concepts at hand. The empirical analysis is carried out using highly

advanced statistical packages, which creates a bridge between theory and application.

Fieldwork

Students generally form groups for data collection for fieldwork in different areas of Maharashtra

under different topics related to population and health. This approach incorporates a spirit of

teamwork, learning and knowledge sharing. It allows for discussion and exposure to different

perspectives and situations that provide a more realistic picture of the problem. Data is analyzed

with different softwares and results are presented to a panel of experts. Field visiting and primary

data collection are compulsory for different courses taught in the institute.

Presentation

Presentations are an integral part of different programs of the institute. Students are assigned for

presentations on different topics as part of every paper being taught during the course. At the final

stage of thesis and term paper, students are required to present their findings to a panel of experts

and peers. In the process, they are exposed to a multiplicity of questions related to the chosen topic.

This ensures a better comprehension of the concepts and also trains them to present their ideas

and defend their findings in a concrete and logical manner.
