Designed for real world operating conditions, they provide an unsurpassed level of service, performance, protection, and fluid life. All of our lubricants are formulated with the finest base stocks and additives on the market. Increased Fluid Life at High Temperatures

SumOil’s line of Air Compressor Lubricants are designed to operate at temperatures beyond 20 0 F. It is common industry knowledge that for every 20oF rise in operating temperature, fluid life is decreased by 50%. With more and more compressor manufacturers requiring users to run their systems at high temperatures, we have specifically developed our lubricants to maximize fluid life even at these elevated levels.

SumOil’s line of Air Compressor Lubricants is formulated to provide maximum levels of demulsibility, meaning the expedited separation from water even while the compressor is operating. Increased levels of water can be detrimental to bearing life in all compressors, so the lubricants ability to separate from water and avoid contamination, viscosity dilution, and increased compressor wear is critical for trouble free operation. Series R717 - Ammonia Compressor Lubricant

Series R717 represents the next generation of Hydrocracked ammonia refrigeration fluids. An enhanced version of the technology used by most OEM’s, the 2-stage hydrocracked ammonia compressor fluids have been designed specifically to meet the complex needs of ammonia refrigeration systems. Through our advanced technology formulation we have designed the lubricant to provide an exceptionally long fluid life, excellent low temperature fluidity, very low oil carry over, and excellent rust and corrosion protection.

Less Oil Carryover

Series R717 ammonia refrigeration lubricants have been blended with the highest quality 2-stage hydrocracked base stock. The 2-stage hydrocracking process produces a long straight hydrocarbon chain molecule with no double bonds and a very low level of aromatics. This produces a very stable compressor fluid, with very low volatility, and very low solubility with ammonia. All of which will lead to 50%-80% less oil carry over.

Why our Biodegradable Hydraulic Fluids are

Better Series GEHF Biodegradable Hydraulic Fluids utilizes the latest synthetic base stocks to provide both biodegradability and excellent performance in even the harshest conditions. Series GEHF lubricants have a very long fluid life, and offer enhanced lubricity, superior corrosion protection, unsurpassed wear protection, and excellent performance.

Less Fluid Life

Through the use of full synthetic base stocks, Series GEHF Biodegradable Hydraulic Fluids offer biodegradability without any of the drawbacks of vegetable based hydraulic fluids. Vegetable based hydraulic fluids have a very short fluid life, because they quickly degrade when exposed to high temperatures (oxidation). As the degrade, their ability to lubricate and protect significantly decreases. Series GEHF Biodegradable Hydraulic Fluids avoid all of these drawbacks by utilizing only advanced technology synthetic base fluids. These synthetic base fluids are designed specifically to resist thermal and chemical breakdown when within a hydraulic system, but to them biodegrade if accidentally released into a body of water.

A Vegetable Oils ability to lubricate and protect is severely limited by its very short fluid life. Series GEHF Biodegradable Hydraulic Fluids have been designed to provide continuous protection for the life of the fluid.

Enhanced Protection Series GEHF Biodegradable Hydraulic Fluids provide unsurpassed wear, rust, and corrosion protection as well as excellent lubricity and enhanced load carrying capabilities. Due to their tendency to rapidly degrade, a vegetable oil based hydraulic fluids ability to lubricate and protect diminishes significantly over the life of the fluid.

Easily Separates From Water

Series GEHF Biodegradable Hydraulic Fluids have been designed to shed water. When a Series GEHF fluid is combined with water, the two fluids begin to immediately separate. This makes it far easier to remove water from the system. When a vegetable based hydraulic fluid is combined with water, it partially mixes. This can make it extremely difficult to remove water from the system, leading to poor system performance, decreased bearing life, and a decrease in the fluid life.

Series GEHF Biodegradable Hydraulic Fluids have been formulated to be completely compatible with most standard hydraulic fluids. With Series GEHF, time consuming flushing procedures are not required. With vegetable oil based hydraulic fluids, changing to and from a standard hydraulic fluid may require a lengthy flushing regiment that often involves the use of solvents, cleaners and replacement filters.

Greater Variety

The use of synthetic base fluids allows us to provide a broad spectrum of hydraulic fluids, formulated to meet the demands of a variety of environmental and mechanical conditions. Our biodegradable hydraulic fluids are available in a wide variety of viscosity grades, as well as specialized formulations such as high dielectric hydraulic fluids, and multi-viscosity formulations which are perfect for extreme temperature conditions. Vegetable based hydraulic fluids offer a limited range of fluid viscosities, and are not suited for use in extreme temperature conditions or challenging mechanical conditions.

Series DescalerDescalerSeries Descaler has been designed to be a safe, super efficient, water soluble scale solvent, and is effective even under the most severe conditions.

Descaler will dissolve approximately 2 lbs of lime and water scale per gallon. It is considered non-toxic, non-corro-sive, and non-flammable when used as directed.

Descaler will not erode, pit, or oxidize metals, however, it is not recommended for use on aluminum, zinc, or any alloy of magnesium. It has also been accepted for use as an acid cleaner by the U.S.D.A., and has been assayed using the D.O.T. skin corrosion rabbit test as “non-corrosive”.

AdditiveA chemical added in small quantities to a petroleum product to improve certain properties. Among the more common petroleum product addi-tives are: oxidation inhibitors for increasing the product’s resistance to oxidation and for lengthening its service life; rust and corrosion inhibitors to protect lubricated surfaces against rusting and corrosion; demulsifiers to promote oil-water separation; VI improvers to make an oil’s viscosity less sensitive to changes in temperature; pour-point depressants to lower the cold temperature fluidity of petroleum products; oiliness agents, anti-wear agents, and EP additives to prevent high friction, wear, or scoring under various conditions of boundary lubrication; detergents and dispersants to maintain cleanliness of lubricated parts; anti-foam agents to reduce foaming tendencies; and tackiness agents to increase the adhesive properties of a lubricant, improve retention, and prevent dripping or spattering.

AnhydrousFree of water, especially water of crystallization.

Anti-Foam AgentAn additive that causes foam to dissipate more rapidly. It promotes the combination of small bubbles into large bubbles which burst more rap-idly.

Anti-OxidantA chemical added in small quantities to a petroleum product to increase its oxidative resistance in order to prolong its storage and/or service life. The additive activates in two ways: by combining with the peroxides formed initially by oxidation paralyzing their oxidizing influence; or reacting with a catalyst to coat it with an inert film.

Anti Wear AgentAn additive that minimizes wear caused by metal-to-metal contact by reacting chemically with the metal by forming a film on the surfaces under normal operating conditions.

Auto-Ignition TemperatureMinimum temperature at which a combustible fluid will burst into flame without the assistance of an extraneous ignition source. This temperature is typically several hundred degrees higher than the flash and fire point.

Base OilsBase stocks or blends used as an inert ingredient in the manufacturing of automotie and industrial lubricants.

Base StocksRefined petroleum oils that can either be blended with one another or supplemented with additives to make lubricants.

Bomb Oxidation StabilityOxidation resistance of lubricant; the lower the pressure drop, the less oxygen consumed, and the longer the storage life of the lubricant.

Boundary LubricationA form of lubrication effective in the absence of a full fluid film. Made possible by the inclusion of certain additives in the lubricating oil that pre-vent excessive friction and scoring by forming a film whose strength is greater than that of oil alone. These additives include oiliness agents, compounded oils, anti-wear agents, and extreme pressure agents.

Carbon ResidueCoked material formed after lubricating oil has been exposed to high temperatures. Many consider that the type of carbon found is of greater significance that the quantity.

DemulsibilityA lubricant oils ability to separate from water, and important condsideration in the lubricant maintenance of many circulating systems.

DetergentAn additive which chemically neutralizes acidic contaminants in the oil before they become insoluble and fall out of the oil forming sludge. Par-ticles are kept finely divided so that they can remain dispersed throughout the lubricant.

EntrainmentDescribing a state of an immiscible fluid component. Minute quantities of a fluid (typically water) can be dissolved or absorbed into the oil, but excess quantities can be most harmful to equipment due to the entrainment leaving gaps in the lubricated areas.

Flash PointLowest temperature at which the air vapor from a sample of a petroleum product or other combustible fluid will “flash” in the presence of an igni-tion source. The flash can be seen in the form of a small spark over the liquid.

Fire PointLowest temperatureat which a combustible fluid will burst into flame in the presence of an extraneous ignition source. Very little additional heat is required to reach the fire point from the flash point.

FoamingA possible reaction of an oil when mixed with air. this entrained air can result in reduced film strength and performance reduction.

Foam InhibitorAn additive which causes foam to dissipate more rapidly. It promotes the combination of small bubbles into large bubbles which burst more easily.

Four-Ball TestsTwo test procedures on the same principle. The Four Ball Wear Test is used to determine the relative wear-preventing properties of lubricants operating under boundary lubrication conditions. the Four Ball Extreme Pressure Test is designed to evaluate performance under much higher unit loads.

FrictionResistance to motion on a surface or by a substance as a result of its contact with another surface or substance. Sliding friction is that which occurs between two solid bodies, while fluid friction is that which occurs between the molecules of a fluid in motion. Both types of friction can be wasteful in power and energy, and sliding friction causes wear.

GreaseA type of lubricant composed of a fluid lubricant (typically lubricant oils) thickened with a material that contributes a degree of plasticity (typically soaps). Just as viscosity is the basic property of lubricating oil, consistency is the basic property of grease. Consistency is measured in terms of penetration, tested in terms of tenths of a millimeter that a standard cone acting under the influence of gravity penetrates the sample under controlled test conditions. the greater penetration, the softer the grease.

HydrocarbonsCompounds of hydrogen and carbon of which petroleum products are typicaly examples. Petroleum oils are generally grouped into two parts: Napthenics, which possess a high proportion of unsaturated cyclic molecules; and paraffinic, which possess a low proportion of unsaturated cyclic molecules.

Hydro TreatingA Gulf patented process used to make lubricant base stocks. In the process, lubricant feedstocks are reacted with hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst at very high temperature (800oF) and pressure (3200psig). The process displaces impurities and unsaturated hydrocarbons.

Hydrodynamic LubricationA type of lubrication effected solely by the pumping action developed by the sliding of one surface over another in contact with an oil. Adhesion to the moving surface draws the oil into the high-pressure area between the surfaces, and viscosity retards the tendency to squeeze the oil out. If the pressure developed by this action is sufficient to completely separate the two surfaces, full-fluid-film lubrication is said to prevail.

OxidationA form of chemical deterioration to which all petroleum products are subject to, and involves the addition of oxygen atoms resulting in degrada-tion. It is accelerated by higher temperatures above 160oF, with the rate of oxidation doubling by each 18o increase. With fuels and lubricant oils, oxidation produces sludges, varnishes, gums, and acids, all of which are undesirable.

Oxidation InhibitorA chemical added in small quantities to a petroleum product to increase its oxidation resistance in order to prolong its storage and/or service life. The additive activates in two ways: by combining with the peroxides formed initially by oxidation paralyzing their oxidizing influence; or reacting with a catalyst to coat it with an inert film.

Oxidation StabilityResistance of a petroleum product to oxidation, therefore increasing its potential service or storage life. Since the life of many lubricants can be well over a year, simulations are used to show the time required for a sample to develop a specified degree of oxidation under accelerated conditions.

Pour PointA widely used low temperature flow indicator, depicted as 5oF above the temperature to which a normal liquid petroleum product maintains fluid-ity. It is a significant factor in cold weather start-up. Paraffinic oils typically have higher pour points due to the formation of wax crystals, while many other lubricants reach their low pour points through an increase in viscosity.

Rust InhibitorA lubricant additive for protecting ferrous (iron and steel) components from rusting caused by water contamination or other harmful materials from oil degradation. Some rust inhibitors operate similarly to corrosion inhibitors by formin inert films on metal surfaces. Other rust inhibitors absorb water by incorporatig it into water-in-oil emulsion so that only oil touches the metal surfaces.

Shear StressA unit of frictional force overcome in sliding one layer of fluid along another. This is typically measured in pounds per square foot, with pounds representing the frictional force, and square feet representing the area of contact between the sliding layers.

SludgeThe collective name for contamination in an compressor and on parts bathed by the lubricating oil. This includes decomposition products from the fuel, oil, and particulates from sources external to the compressor.

SolvencyThe ability to dissolve into a solution producing a homogeneous physical mixture. The degree of solvency varies along with the rate of dissolution depending on the amount of heat added to the solution.

Vapor PressureThe measure of a liquids volatility. The higher the pressure at a standard test temperature, the more volatile the sample, and the more readily it will evaporate.

VarnishA deposit resulting from oxidation and polymerization of fuels and lubricants. Similar to but softer than lacquer.

ViscosityMeasure of a fluids resistance to flow. This is typically measured as the time required for a standard quantity of fluid at a certain temperature to flow through a standard orifice. The higher the value, the more viscous the fluid. Viscosity varies inversely with temperature so the measure-ments are always expressed together. Tests are typically conducted at 40oC and 100oC.

Viscosity IndexThe measure of the rate of change of viscosity with temperature. Heating tends to make lubricants thinner, cooling makes them thicker. The higher a VI is on a particular fluid, the less of a change in viscosity there will be over a given temperature range. In determining the VI, two temperatures of viscosity are take, one at 40oC and the other at 100oC.

VolatilityThe property of a liquid that defines its evaporation characteristics. Of two liquids, the more volatile will boil at a lower temperature and will evaporate faster when both liquids are at the same temperature. The volatility of petroleum products can be evaluated by tests for flash point, vapor pressure, distillation, and evaporation rate.
