SRMS is a non-profit organization dedicated to an appreciation of quality mainstream, international, and independent films.The Satyajit Ray Memorial Society believes in the power and beauty of film. SRMS started with an agenda to study the Cinema of Satyajit Ray. Over the years SRMS observed that filmmakers continually take new approaches to presenting the visual image, film has taken less than a century to grow into one of the most potent mediums for self-expression. This young art form combines technology and human imagination to create a formidable cultural force worldwide. Film not only moves us emotionally, but also alters our everyday lives as an impetus for the study and criticism of history and society. The cinemas potential to transform as well as reflect society in all its diversity is what today Satyajit Ray Memorial Society aims to recognize and realize.The society comprises of people from diverse backgrounds in Bangalore and is not affiliated in any way with any Satyajit Ray Trust or the Ray family.The society has been in existence since 2012 and has been regularly organising informal study meetings and discussions on Ray and in collaboration with various educational institutions and bodies organised screenings of Rays masterpieces. The society has regularly felicitated nationally acclaimed film direc tors and organised discussions and screenings on humanistic cinema. The society has organized country specific, theme specific & Director specific, informal Film screening sessions in collaboration with film societies and educational institutions.

Bimal Roy, the Silent Master of Indian Cinema piloted the golden age of cinema in the 1940s. A socially committed director, his films had the power to inspire and move audiences. The Satyajit Ray Memorial Society on 9th January 2016 plans to remember the works of Bimal Roy. The director and his work would be remembered. One of the most acclaimed Hindi film directors of all time; he was famous for his romantic-realist melodramas that took on important social issues while still being entertaining. Roy made his mark with his poetic screenplays and use of emotions in films like "Parineeta", "Devdas", "Do Bigha Zameen" and "Bandini", at a time when creative brilliance resonated in virtually every aspect of filmmaking.By 1966, the year of his death, he had directed more than 20 films, most of which got widespread acclaim.Bimal Roy passed away at the age of 55 on 7th January 1966, leaving behind an unmatched andTo highlight Bimal Royss status as a cineaste and film-lover over his status as a parallel filmmaker, Satyajit Ray Memorial Society and the National Gallery of Modern Art , Bangalore and are collaborating to organise a day long programme to remember Bimal Roy on his 50th death anniversary at NGMA Bangalore Auditorium, on the 9th of January 2016.The programme proposes to feature his most impactive work Do Bigha Zameen, alongwith a short film by Doordarshan in the Portrait of a Director Series.Four decades after his death, Bimal Roys stature as one of Indias foremost filmmakers is on the decline, thanks to a new generation of cinema goers who have never watched his films. Most of Roys classics were made in the 1950s and 60s, the golden era of Bollywood, but their screenings are now limited to retrospectives at film festivals.Satyajit Ray Memorial Society is standing by Rinki Roy, and Bimal Roy Memorial in taking up cudgels on the directors behalf who hopes to keep alive the legacy of Roy and his contemporaries.Satyajit Ray Memorial Society wants to make the young audience know about the classics that exist.The vision behind the programme is to represent as a whole Roys career both in terms of its various phases. From the imp active and emotionally charged charged films of the middle and his assimilation into the larger culture of the world in the final and the various ideas contained within it. The film will be discussed at length in a panel discussion that will feature contemporary film makers who have studied the works of Roy actively for the past so many years and are keen to preserve Roys artistic legacy. The list includes Mr. Girish Kasaravalli , Mr Girish Karnad , Mr KM Chaitanya, Mr Prakash Belwadi. We propose to involve them in a discussion on Bimal Roys Cinema.The screening will also be accompanied by an exhaustive photo exhibition which will have on display a wide selection of stills from the making of the classic..
