Several researches have concluded that your intelligence is directly proportional to your vocabulary. That is to say, the more words you know, the more knowledgeable you will be. .Just like teaching is the mother of all professions, Calisthenics (bodybuilding in general terms) is the mother of all sports, Vocabulary is the mother of all knowledge. .And if so much is associated with vocabulary, why not spend some time in acquiring it?.There a lot of books which are available in the market, which claim to boost vocabulary, and believe me, I have read each one of them. Most of them are either useless or extremely expensive or too oversimplified or too wordy. Each book is filled with more words that even a lexicographer would find it difficult to digest. .But the biggest drawback which I have observed in every book is that there are no pictures in them. Some have cartoons in them, but then, most of the kids of schools/ colleges are not able to make any sense of them. . I have tried to design these sessions as effectively, expressively, and intelligently as I am capable of. I have also used pictures to fix the word as clearly as possible among the students, and to keep it as intelligible as possible. I have taken pictures from the internet, and that too thumbnails, so that it could be easily loaded on the internet. And that even if a student is operating his mobile phone on GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) which is by far the slowest Mobile Data Service, he must be able to use the website. .Secondly, all the images that I have used, I think that those images are in the public domain. At times, I have also mentioned the source from where the image is taken. If, however, you think that you are not given the credit, please tell me, and I will give the due credit, or I will remove the image if you please. .With my experience with several students, I can GUARANTEE you an enhanced level of understanding and accurate thinking if you follow the lesson plan conscientiously. ..There are other several techniques that some extremely knowledgeable, exceptionally qualified, extraordinarily intelligent, and dreadfully experienced teachers suggest. Let me tell you one or two techniques which I was told by my teachers. .The FIRST technique was to use sticky notes around every place of your house you frequent..I tried it and my father reprimanded me to keep my studies to my study table. He accused me of showing off. I also thought that it is not worthwhile to put sticky note, everyday, everywhere, for the rest of my life.Plus, if some of my relatives visit my house, they could destroy everything, or worse. They will laugh at me..The SECOND technique was to use mnemonics ( memory tricks). .It refers to associating the meaning of word to some strange associations, so that you can remember it. I studied every book written by Biswaroop Roy Chowdhury. But I realized that it is pretty difficult to associate different words with some strange concept. It is a task in itself. And not only this, it was too time consuming.. The THIRD technique was to learn one word per day and to write one sentence and carry that notebook / diary with you all the time. .Initially it seemed like a good idea. But what happens after 30th day. You forget the word you have learnt 29 days ago. No one, on this planet can continue this exercise, for more than 90 days. Reason. it is one of the most boring activity in the entire universe. And even if you are dedicated and as ascetic as Bheeshm Pitamah (who can vow that he will never have sex in his life, and keep his words for 350 years) , how much will you accomplish in one year?Just 365 words. !!!FYI, let me tell you that every year Oxford Dictionary include several words all across the world, which are gaining currency. Secondly, if just one day is skipped, several skipped days follow by. Thirdly, carrying a diary, even if it is a 2x3 inch spiral diary, along with your cell phone is irksome, and if you forget to keep it in your pocket, forget everything about learning that day. . The Fourth technique was to do crossword puzzles. But it is rather disheartening to spend 30 minutes trying to solve a crossword puzzle without being able to write a single alphabet on it. Not practical for a person who wants to improve vocabulary. In fact, this exercise is for those who have a very good vocabulary. They can (and should) attempt crossword puzzles to polish their knowledge. .The Fifth technique was to repeatedly REPEAT the vocabulary lists. One of the most reputed wordlist (as I was repeatedly told by my most experienced teachers who are still quashing the curiosity of every kid who comes within a periphery of 1000 kilometers) is Barrons GRE Wordlist of 4,759 words. It has some 50 exercises and each one has 100 something words in each exercise. I still remember the time, when I was preparing for my MBA entrance exam, I tried to memorise those lists several times but to no avail. It occurred to me that it is not possible (or productive) to cram 100 unrelated words in an alphabetical order and reproduce it.There are several big names in English Education Industry (oh yes!!! It is an industry) who have prepared wordlists that focus on the words most commonly found in standardized tests, such as the SAT, MAT, GATE, GRE et cetra. Do not waste your time on those wordlists. .The SIXTH technique was the mother of all the techniques. It was to note down every single unfamiliar word and create as many sentences as possible. .Note all the familiar words, and then frame as many sentences as possible on those words. Generally speaking, it was asked that you should frame ten to fifteen different sentences with each word you collect.

All these sentences would fix the word into your mind.

Since, I never wanted to spend the rest of my life framing as many sentences as possible. I thought, I should give up the idea of acquiring a good vocabulary. .The SEVENTH technique was to read high literature/ English newspapers. .My teachers suggested that I should read classics, poetry, and great authors like Shakespearre, Faulkner, Virginia Woolf, et cetra. They also suggested me to read the The Hindu newspaper. They also told me that the Hinduwallah uses some very good vocabulary. By very good vocabulary, they meant, words which are extremely difficult to understand.Later I realized that there is no point in reading something which requires you to use dictionary four times while reading one line. And there is no point in spending time to write/speak in a way which makes it extremely hard for people to read/listen what you have written/spoken.

If you really want to sacrifice your intelligibility then only go for reading classics, great authors, or the Hindu. .The EIGHTH technique was to create flash cards and carry those cards with you all the time. .I have a bad experience with carrying flash cards. My friends used to laugh at me for this, plus I used to lose them every now and then.Secondly, I got multitudinous copies of certain words. (lost and found). It was a tedious task. There is no point in reading, repeating, unrelated words all the day. There is no difference between carrying notebook/diary all the time, and using flash cards. Both are tedious, both are useless.Think like a manager. If you want to develop a vocabulary of 50,000 words are you willing to write 50,000 words with their meanings, and carry 20 or 30 or 40 cards with you, all the time, for the rest of your life?.There could be a lot of other methods which I might not be aware of..However, there is one method which I thought to be the most useless, but later I realized that it was the most effective technique to enhance the vocabulary. . And what was that technique?.The technique was to study the meaning of the words, the roots, the origin of the words from the dictionary, and to guess the meaning of the word, and then check if the meaning guessed is correct.. It is the same technique on which I have based my lesson plans. If you know one root you can decipher thousands of words which has that root in it.In every session I will explain one root word and all the words formed by it. I have included every word which can appear in competitive exams, excluding medical exams..How to get the best results?.First of all, read everything, which is given in a session. See the pictures. I have tried to use movies/ TV serials/ famous personalities to explain the concept of the word. .Try to guess the meaning just by looking at the pictures. .Secondly, .Remember to repeat.Repeat to remember..Everyday spend 15 minutes every day is better than than studying 7 hours every week. .Study / re-study at least one session every day..And this point is so important that I will write it once more..Study / re-study at least one session every day. The tagline is Learn 40 words per day.It is an average, that I am talking about..Learn to ride bicycle : exhaust : stamina : overall health : longevity : : Learn root : practice : Knowledge : feel (better IQ & EQ) : wisdom You need to feel the word to be able to say what it says.
