AboutMedFest-EgCOMMON GROUND BETWEEN MEDICINE AND FILM

MedFest-EG is a medically themed educational film forum that launched its first edition in Cairo in January, 2017. MedFest-EG offers a different scope of approaching healthcare and filmmaking through exploring common grounds between medicine and film.

We use film as a powerful medium to portray human existence in a world afflicted by mental and physical health challenges.

Our ultimate vision is to support the well-being of individuals in society. Both healthcare professionals and film makers have a social responsibility to deliver their respective messages with clarity and compassion.

The idea for MedFest-EG was inspired by MedFest UK, and founded in Egypt by Dr. Mina El Naggar and Dr. Khalid Ali. Dr. El Naggar is a Clinical nutrition specialist, member of the ESPEN society for clinical nutrition. He is also an actor, with numerous roles in TV and film, an award-winning filmmaker as well as the director of MedFest-EG.

Dr. Ali is a senior lecturer in Geriatrics in Brighton and Sussex Medical School, media and film correspondent for the Medical Humanities Journal in the UK. He is the author of “The Cinema Clinic: Reflections on Film and Medicine” book. In 2017, he produced and directed his first short film ‘Those Little Things’. With his contribution in international film festivals in Cannes, Edinburgh, London, Dubai, Cairo and Sudan Film Festivals, he serves as MedFest-EG international programmer and coordinator.

We also have an esteemed creative team of passionate members from both the medical and artistic worlds to make every edition of MedFest-EG a unique experience.

Films include short narratives, documentaries, animations, video essays and experimental visuals that focus on the humane and psychological aspects of the set theme.

The Films of each edition of MEDFEST-EG have a certain theme, and are chosen meticulously to reflect our vision.

MedFest-EG selects renowned short films as well as advertising an open international call every year with a specific theme. This theme changes yearly to attract high quality and award-winning films from different countries to encourage a diverse intercultural dialogue. Films are carefully selected by a panel of expert specialists from both the film business and medical fields.

Over a series of days, according to a set theme, MedFest-EG screens a selection of short films portraying physical/mental health conditions, followed by a moderated discussion led by a panel of experts. The panel includes artists, film-makers, clinical academics, psychiatrists, psychologists and medical students.

Additionally, we host special feature film screenings discussing the topic of the chosen theme. All films are translated to English and have Arabic language subtitles if their primary language is not Arabic. We secure the local Egyptian authorities’ permission (censorship board) for all screenings.

In 2018, we introduced a parallel program that included workshops and performance art events to broaden our reach to target audience. We are always trying to expand beyond Cairo (Egypt’s capital and cultural centre) to hold our events in other major cities across Egypt and the MENA region.

Spreading health and well-being knowledge through film screenings is the first step towards enhancing awareness about certain medical conditions, their physical and psychological impact on those affected, their relatives and society. Such awareness would create compassion within the healthcare system; improve service delivery, and reduce the stigma attached to certain illness in society. Screening international films introduces a universal dimension of engaging with different countries and cultural backgrounds discussing similar subjects related to a health condition. MedFest-EG gives a more interesting and multi-faceted approach to the film viewing experience. The discussion panels may provide a platform for supporting and stimulating the production of films with an accurate and humane portrayal of the medical condition.

The interactive nature of MedFest-EG events allows it to stand out as a haven where Medicine meets Film, where art communicates with science and healthcare professionals engage in a conversation with filmmakers to push the cinematic industry forward.MedFest-EG brings a different and diverse crowd into cinemas to discuss humanity beyond the moving pictures. It also delivers a dynamic format to various cities and venues outside the central cultural hub; these cities do not usually get such opportunities. We consider reaching out to alternative venues part of our social responsibility as passionate believers of the power of art to spread messages of compassion and unity.

Medical Students & Young Doctors

Being exposed to different cultures while dealing with medical conditions will help them appreciate and disseminate values of compassion and humanity as key qualities in everyday clinical care from clinical and ethical viewpoints.

Filmmakers

Creating a medium that interests filmmakers by debating the cinematic influence on collective medical knowledge and emphasizing the importance of attention to accurate medical information on screen.

Healthcare professionals

People who provide medical care must give accurate information about medical conditions through their everyday encounters with patients and their families.

Patients & General Public

MEDFEST-EG would not be fulfilled without the inclusion of patient groups and all those who take an interest in the human condition portrayed in film.

Psychiatrists & Psychologists

Dissecting the psychological profile of dramatic characters and questioning the significant individual and societal implications that might arise from portraying them on screen.

Screenwriters, Cinematographers& Visual Artists

Reaching a common ground that stresses the importance of delivering an artistic vision in portraying matters related to health and medicine in films.

We believe that such an educational forum should be inclusive to all. Therefore; everyone is invited to join, including children. Medfest 2019 will be a special edition about children health and wellbeing. We will be hosting special screenings and workshops dedicated to children. However, we passionately encourage the following target groups to participate meaningfully from the forthcoming forum.

Our Target Audience

Page 8: About Medicine Film in - Medfest Egypt · Our Target Audience. ... Furthermore we had our Þrst international screenin" in Tunisia and mana"ed for the Þrst time to hold a ... HUMANITY

Bringing two seemingly different worlds together was never easy, but our enthusiasm and belief in the power and importance of art in medicine made that possible ever since Dr. El Naggar and Dr. Ali met and discovered their mutual passion for film alongside their medical careers. They used their keen eye for high quality films in exploring the potential of creativity and humanity beyond illness as seen in film. Both doctors were the driving force to establish the forum in its first edition in 2017 with support from the British Council, the Egyptian Ministry of Culture | Cultural and Development Fund, The Royal College of Psychiatry (UK) and International Federation for Medical Student Association (IFMSA). In April 2017, the first edition was a huge success as it satisfied the audience’ need for such films that are rarely seen in cinemas. The format of bringing healthcare professionals and film makers closer together made it an even more enriching experience. So we were enthused to continue.

For the second edition in 2018, we introduced a parallel program in addition to our regular setting of screenings and discussions. This edition had an incredible impact with very positive feedback. Furthermore we had our first international screening in Tunisia and managed for the first time to hold a MedFest-EG event in El Minya with support from our loyal partners; Goethe Institute and the British and US embassies in Cairo.

In 2019, MedFest-EG will be about the wellbeing of the future generations by focusing on children health. Across the different generations that we have witnessed and belong to, child care has gone through some enormous developments in terms of the modern age approach to child psychiatry, upbringing and disease management.

We plan to screen films that discuss children’s mental and physical health and portray them in realistic, humane narratives on screen. In line with our belief in the power of Art and Cinema, we want to inaugurate an informed discussion between filmmakers, young doctors and healthcare professionals and the general public, about the little ones whose world is larger than we can ever imagine.

According to Campas - central agency for public mobilization and statics, Over one third of the population in Egypt is below the age of 14. We believe that children deserve our attention and awareness of their mental and physical health issues. It is our social responsibility at MedFest-EG to build a bridge between the affected populations, health care professionals, and filmmakers to honestly discuss such issues in film and extend our outreach to parents, educators and child facilitators.

We, at MedFest-EG, are all working hard to reach this goal and would definitely need support not just to hold our main screening events, but also to broaden the horizon of the parallel program. We plan to extend our events to an all-year program of screenings, performances and workshops in children hospitals, schools and NGOs working with children with special needs and those in underprivileged areas in various cities across Egypt. Through this edition we hope to spark the beginning of a different kind of conversation about children health that would last well beyond 2019.

Proposed DATES AND VENUESMarch 21 st , 2019, Zawya Cinema, Cairo.Screening events in other cities and governorates are in plan.

Film Selection:

Process is done through hunting unique award-winning films fitting the scope of this edition. We are looking for films that recently screened in film festivals alongside an international open call for filmmakers through our social media portals to submit their films.

Films are selected by a panel of renowned specialists from both the film-making and medical fields.

We want to attract high quality films that deal with different psychological and physical health conditions of children such as Autism, ADHD, Down syndrome, malnutrition, congenital diseases, children oncology, etc. In addition we want to expand the scope of the edition to include films that discuss troubled children and early teens with stories about bullying, child labor and refugee children affected by wars or natural disasters.

We want to include films that portray family dynamics among parents of children with a health related condition and those dealing with a loss of a child. Also films that tell stories of child support systems and people like teachers, facilitators, social workers, etc. and their relationship with children suffering from a health related condition.

The final film selection and program to be announced by mid-February 2019.

We are taking the educational and artistic experience of MedFest-EG far beyond film screenings where we try putting together ideas and insights from different groups of healthcare professionals, filmmakers and children and their families in workshops and camps directed towards healthcare awareness and filmmaking for children about their own topics.

The objective of the parallel program is to add more space for interaction and reflections based on the topics tackled in the films selection.

The Parallel program will consist of 2-3 workshops conducted by Psychiatrists, Psychologists and Artists.

Timing and Location will be determined after the announcement of our final program in early March 2019.

The first MEDFEST-EG edition came to the light in January and April of 2017, Tackling mental health issues which have always been a part of the collective consciousness of communities. Whether spoken about loudly or shunned from public discussions, mental health has been and would always be a concern for us all and despite the occurrence of global changes towards dealing with mental health issues, stigmas are still there and correctly dealing with them requires communication;that would always be our goal.

A film essay reflecting on the concepts of “sanity” and “madness.” With the use of images, sounds and text, the author contemplates on the impossibility of capturing the essence of madness, which transcends the limitations of any specific discourse, be it medical, social or psychoanalytical. The film subtly touches on all these discourses, approaches this impossibility, and documents the author’s several attempts and failures to make a film that represents the “mad” or the experience of “madness”, which have all led to this realisation of the impossibility of defining or representing madness.
