Measuring Mass and Volume
Mass is measured in Kilograms (kg) Grams (g) Milligrams (mg)
Volume is measured in Liters (L) and milliliters (mL) for liquids Cubic meters (m3) and
cubic centimeters (cm3) for solids
Matter Has Physical Properties Can be observed with our senses Can be measured without changing its
characteristics Some physical properties
Thermal conductivity Density Solubility State Ductility Malleability
Applying Physical Forces Physical forces can change the state of a
substance by adding or removing energy Changing temperature or pressure Physical forces do not change the chemical
properties of a substance
Matter Everything is made of matter Matter has mass and volume
Mass is the amount of matter in a substance Volume is the amount of space taken up by a
substance
