Background: GOALS has long encouraged and managed program-wide community service to help others. Teams of GOALS youth have regularly helped the Special Olympics, visited the Long Beach Veterans Hospital, supported events at CHOC Hospital, planted shade trees for senior citizens, helped with food drives and distribution for the hungry and taught sports and skating to countless organizations and school-children. With the creation of GOALS Cadets, GOALS nowl offer a unique opportunity for a select number of outstanding and committed GOALS youth volunteers to contribute to their community in a remarkable way – through GOALS Cadets. Program Period: An eight-week program from mid-June to mid-August. Eligibility: Any enrolled GOALS participant who is in Junior High School or High School. Daily Commitment: GOALS Cadets participation is expected Monday – Friday, from 8 AM – Noon (4 hours) daily for a total of 20 hours per week or 120 total hours. Program Concentration: The program will have 5 major components: Physical Fitness, Education, Job Training, Service To Others, & Community Awareness. Physical Fitness: A daily regime featuring 1 hour minutes of personal physical fitness will be instituted to include warm-up activities, stretching, calisthenics, jogging/walking and team-oriented activities. Education: A daily educational forum will offer 6 themed weeks of subjects including writing workshops, public speaking/presentations, computer literacy, applied mathematics, reading appreciation, music & the arts. Computer literacy will feature access to the existing Disney GOALS computer lab – access to 6 computer workstations will improve keyboard skills, facility with word processing, spreadsheet and PowerPoint programs. Job Training: For 7 years, Disney GOALS participated with local city and school district job training programs during the summer. Currently, federal support for local job training has diminished to the point where paid job training is extremely limited in the communities served by GOALS. However, the voluntary GOALS Cadets initiative will feature job training seminars and will simulate aspects of many work experiences, such as completing a timesheet daily, team meetings in anticipation of projects, and periodic “work reviews” and counsel on workplace expectations and behavior. Service To Others: This element will combine actual field outreach to work with elementary school age children through sports clinics at area schools (through an existing GOALS initiative called “GOALS For Schools” including the new initiative called “Wimbledon In Anaheim”, along with workshops on other service opportunities and efforts taking place in America including The Peace Corps”, VISTA, AmeriCorps and the military. Community Awareness: Community resources are often poorly communicated. Our Cadets will help to distribute information in select communities about valuable public and not for profit services that are available but perhaps not communicated to the highly mobile communities served by GOALS. In the process of doing so, our Cadets will themselves become educated leaders, capable of better communicating their knowledge of community resources to others in their neighborhood.

Current Program Plans: • The program will accept up to 200 GOALS Cadets,

• The program will be a summer of service period of 8 weeks, lasting from the end of the

traditional school year to the middle of August.

• The program will be based from the GOALS headquarters in Anaheim, California.

• The initial program service focus will include the following:

Facility beautification to include landscaping, painting, cleanup and minor repairs

GOALS “CityPride” – to clean up parks, paint benches and wipe out graffiti in central Anaheim

GOALS For Schools Sports & Literacy – Assist with outreach at area elementary schools to

teach sports and read story books to primary grades

Food packing for low income families at the OC Food Bank

Equipment inventory and repairs related to program activities..

Leadership at planned trips involving Special Olympics, other programs involving the handicapped or trips to Veterans Hospitals.

Assistance at planned GOALS For Schools sports outreach efforts at Anaheim Elementary

Schools.

Assistance with the Orange County Association of Retarded Citizens (OCARC) where possible through a new athletics initiative called GOALS Special Sports.

Assistance with the GOALS Summer Sports Camp

Other regular, daily activities may include: physical fitness training, academic time (journal preparation, computer skills and reading, and/or time for mentoring with senior GOALS staff. Special activities will include training seminars every two weeks. Future Program Development & Resources Required The program, while “voluntary” from a youth standpoint does not eliminate all costs of program development or deployment. Staff costs to plan, recruit, train and direct the overall initiative are necessary. Transportation expenses and equipment/supplies expenses will also apply as will marginal costs of overhead expenses including utilities, phone costs, insurance, and accounting fees. The budget estimate for the current project is approximately to $35,000. A modest expansion for this program would be to double its size over a 3 year period. Longer term,

the hope is to deploy volunteer Cadets in other locations, such as recreation centers, and at school sites directly to support recreation and fitness programs for thousands of youngsters.

GOALS CityPride is a centerpiece program involving GOALS Cadets service. This is one of the most popular and visible service initiatives led by GOALS. Several major wings of the CityPride service feature physical improvements to urban areas including graffiti removal, shade tree planting, cleaning, painting and other repair in area parks. A service learning component developed by GOALS teaches youth about the history and character of the urban areas which they are helping - thus further reinforcing a sense of identity and pride. GOALS Cadets lead by word as well as by example! A GOALS Cadets service opportunity with our GOALS For Schools-Literacy component features teen Cadets reading storybooks to thousands of local elementary school students. One of those books, “Graffiti In Tahiti” teaches through a primary grade level book, about a bad shark who “tags” and ruins a coral reef in Tahiti. The good fish teach the shark how to clean up the damage and become part of a solution instead. Through this community engagement and other proactive efforts, GOALS Cadets are leading the way to show how others their age can make a difference by boosting other municipal efforts oriented toward ending the cycle of urban decay and juvenile destruction. All participation in GOALS Cadets and CityPride are coordinated by GOALS. All transportation, uniforms, equipment and coaching oversight are provided to the Cadets at no charge if they are enrolled in the overall GOALS program.
