In the US, there are two main types of certification: engineer-in-training (EIT)and professional engineer (PE).The EIT certificate is earned through an exam (fundamentals of engineering) usually at the end of the bachelor's degree. The PE certificate is earned by1) getting an EIT certificate, 2) working 2-4 years as an engineer under the supervision of PEs, and 3) passing the PE exam.

The number of years you work depends on the state.I think the exams in most states are the same, but some states add more topics andtest other areas more thoroughly. For example, California has the Seismic Principles portion, which you're unlikelyto see in other states. I've heard that California and New York have the toughest exams.

When you work in another part of the US, you need to get certified by that state. Some states willhonor your PE license from another state. I think that most (if not all) stateswill honor licenses

from California and New York, but not vice-versa.
