Quick Tips forUsing the Forms

The Pedigree ChartPedigree charts, or lineage charts, are similarto a snapshot of your direct ancestry. Pedigreecharts are not designed to record all the knowninformation about a family, but are used assummaries of the information in the familygroup records.

You fill in the Chart No. 1 with yourself asNumber 1, your father is Number 2, yourmother is Number 3. Using pencil instead ofpen allows for easy corrections.

The Family Group RecordFamily group records, or group sheets, aredetailed records of one family, including infor-mation about a husband, wife and their chil-dren. Children on a family group record arelistred in order of birth with the eldest childfirst.

Record as much information as possible beingsure to record the source of your information.Use as many Notes pages as you need.

Research CalendarThe Research Calendar is a brief record ofyour family history research -- what youlooked at, when you looked at it, and whatyou found. It helps you keep track of the cluesyou've found and their sources. A separateresearch calendar is created for each person ona lineage chart.

Research ExtractsResearch extracts are used to record informa-tion that cannot be photocopied. When recordsare restricted from photocopying or whenrecord quality is too poor to reproduce well,you should hand copy all the pertinent infor-mation. Specific forms are available forbirth/christenings, marriages, and deaths.

Contact/Correspondence LogsThis form can help you keep track of theinquiry letters you have written as well asinterviews and phone calls. You can use thecorrespondence log to track expenses and torecord people you plan to contact.

Source ChecklistA source checklist can be used as a reminderof the types of records you could search forinformation and those sources you havealready checked. Source checklists are anoptional form, but are very useful.

Census AbstractsFederal censuses are an excellent source ofinformation on family groups and pioneerfamilies. However, census records should besupplemented with other evidence because ofthe many errors, especially misspelled names,incorrect ages and birthplaces, in thoserecords. Each year of the census contains dif-ferent information; for example, only the 1900census includes a person's month and year ofbirth. State, local and other enumerations fre-quently contain information not included inthe federal census.

Organizing your research from the beginning will help eliminate problems and confusion laterwhen you reach the point of information overload from your interviews and research at court-houses and libraries.

Fortunately, you don't have to create your own initial plan for organizing your informationbecause there are many standard forms already designed and used by family historians and pro-fessional genealogists.
