of products by solving technical, design and organizational problems. Programs offering training
in this field are found from the bachelor's level to the doctoral level.
Production Engineer
Production Engineer possess a wide set of skills, competences and attitudes based on
market and scientific knowledge. These abilities are fundamental for the performance of
coordinating and integrating professionals of multidisciplinary teams.
In all the sense, Production Engineering course (Equivalent to Mechanical
Engineering) is considered more relevant and significant than that of Mechanical Engineering,
as it fundamentally covers all the related topics in Industry in very elaborative manner, and
glimpses of Marine Engineering and Thermal Power Engineering. Majority of Students also opts
for Design, Thermal, Marine Engineering for their Masters after completion of BE Production.

Competitive Exams after Graduation
GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering)
The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an all-India examination that
primarily tests the comprehensive understanding of various undergraduate subjects in
engineering and science. GATE is conducted jointly by the Indian Institute of Science,
Bangalore and the seven Indian Institutes of Technology (Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur,
Kharagpur, Madras and Roorkee) on behalf of the National Coordination Board – GATE,
Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resources Development
(MHRD), Government of India.
The GATE score of a candidate reflects the relative performance level of a candidate.
The score is used for admissions to various post-graduate education programs (e.g. Master of
Engineering, Master of Technology, Doctor of Philosophy) in Indian higher education institutes,
with financial assistance provided by MHRD and other government agencies. Recently, GATE
scores are also being used by several Indian public sector undertakings (i.e., government-owned
companies) for recruiting graduate engineers in entry-level positions. It is one of the toughest
and most competitive examinations in India.
14
Eligibility Criteria for GATE is as follows
o Bachelor’s degree holders in Engineering/ Technology/ Architecture (4 years after 10+2/
Post-B.Sc./ Post-Diploma) and those who are in the final year of such programs.
o Master’s degree holders in any branch of Science/ Mathematics/ Statistics/ Computer
Applications or equivalent and those who are in the final year of such programs.
o Candidates in the second or higher year of Four-year integrated Master’s degree
programs (Post-B.Sc.) in Engineering/ Technology.
o Candidates in the fourth or higher year of Five-year integrated Master’s degree programs
or Dual Degree programs in Engineering/Technology.
o Candidates with qualifications obtained through examinations conducted by professional
societies recognized by UPSC/AICTE (e.g. AMIE by iE, AMICE by the institute of Civil
Engineers (India)-iCE) as equivalent to B.E./B.Tech.
Structure of GATE Examination
In all the papers, there will be a total of 65 questions carrying 100 marks, out of which 10
questions carrying a total of 15 marks are in General Aptitude (GA). In the papers bearing the
codes AE, AG, BT, CE, CH, CS, EC, EE, IN, ME, MN, MT, PI, TF and XE, the Engineering
Mathematics will carry around 15% of the total marks, the General Aptitude section will
carry 15% of the total marks and the remaining 70% of the total marks is devoted to the
subject of the paper.
GATE 2015 would contain questions of two different types in various papers:
(i) Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) carrying 1 or 2 marks each in all papers and
sections. These questions are objective in nature, and each will have a choice of four
answers, out of which the candidate has to mark the correct answer(s).
(ii) Numerical Answer Questions of 1 or 2 marks each in all papers and sections. For these
questions the answer is a real number, to be entered by the candidate using the virtual
keypad. No choices will be shown for this type of questions.
For management Studies:
CAT – Common Admission Test
The Common Admission Test (CAT) is a computer based test held in India. This test
scores a person on the bases of quantitative ability, data interpretation, verbal ability and logical
reasoning. The Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) started this exam and use the test for
15
selecting students for their business administration programs. The test is conducted every year by
one of the IIM's based on a policy of rotation. In August 2011, it was announced that Indian
Institutes of Technology (IITs) and Indian Institute of Science (IISc) would also use the CAT
scores, instead of the Joint Management Entrance Test (JMET), to select students for their
management programmes from 2012-14 year.
Examination Format
The Common Admission Test (CAT), like virtually all large-scale exams, utilises
multiple forms, or versions, of the test. Hence there are two types of scores involved: a raw score
and a scaled score.
The raw score is calculated for each section based on the number of questions one
answered correctly, incorrectly, or omitted. Candidates are given +3 points for each correct
answer and -1 point for each incorrect answer. No points are given for questions that are not
answered. The raw scores are then adjusted through a process called equating. Equated raw
scores are then placed on a common scale or metric to ensure appropriate interpretation of the
scores. This process is called scaling.
Test Duration and pattern
The CAT 2014 had only two sections. The first section is Quantitative Ability & Data
Interpretation; the second section is Verbal Ability & Logical Reasoning. The examination was
of 170 minutes with no sectional time limits.
Three scaled scores will be presented for each candidate: an overall scaled score and two
separate scaled scores for each section. As the two sections evaluate distinct sets of knowledge
and skills, scores do not correlate across sections. A high score in one section does not guarantee
a high score in another section. Percentile rankings are provided for each individual section as
well as for the overall exam score.
MAT – Management Aptitude Test
Management Aptitude Test (MAT) is and entrance test for admissions into MBA
programs in various top B – schools and other institutes across the India. it conducted by AIMA
(All India Management Association) New Delhi, 4 times (every trimester) in a year.
Eligibility Criteria for MAT:
16
Educational Qualification: Applicant should be graduate (10+3) in any stream (arts /
science / engineering / commerce/ architecture) from a recognized university or its equivalent.
Also students appearing in their final year of graduation can also apply for MAT but they are
required to produce the passing proof later. There are no minimum percentage criteria for
qualifying exam, all students who have passed graduation successfully can apply for MAT.
GRE- Graduate Record Examination
The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is a standardized test that is an admissions
requirement for most graduate schools in the United States. Created and administered
by Educational Testing Service (ETS) in 1949, the exam aims to measure verbal reasoning,
quantitative reasoning, analytical writing, and critical thinking skills that have been acquired
over a long period of time and that are not related to any specific field of study. The GRE
General Test is offered as a computer-based exam administered at Prometric testing centers.
In the graduate school admissions process, the level of emphasis that is placed upon GRE
scores varies widely between schools and between departments within schools. The importance
of a GRE score can range from being a mere admission formality to an important selection
factor.
The GRE was significantly overhauled in August 2011, resulting in an exam that is not
adaptive on a question-by-question basis, but rather by section, so that the performance on the
first verbal and math sections determine the difficulty of the second sections presented. Overall,
the test retained the sections and many of the question types from its predecessor, but the scoring
scale was changed to a 130 to 170 scale (from a 200 to 800 scale).
The cost to take the test is US$195, although ETS will reduce the fee under certain
circumstances. They also promote financial aid to those GRE applicants who prove economic
hardship. ETS does not release scores that are older than 5 years, although graduate program
policies on the acceptance of scores older than 5 years will vary.
The structure of the computer-based GRE revised General Test consists of six sections. The
first section is always the analytical writing section involving separately timed issue and
argument tasks. The next five sections consist of two verbal reasoning sections,
two quantitative reasoning sections, and either an experimental or research section. These
five sections may occur in any order. The experimental section does not count towards the final
17
score but is not distinguished from the scored sections. Unlike the computer adaptive test before
August 2011, the GRE revised General Test is a multistage test, where the examinee's
performance on earlier sections determines the difficulty of subsequent sections. This format
allows the examined person to freely move back and forth between questions within each
section, and the testing software allows the user to "mark" questions within each section for later
review if time remains. The entire testing procedure lasts about 3 hours 45 minutes. One-minute
breaks are offered after each section and a 10-minute break after the third section.
IELTS (International English Language Testing System)
IELTS is the International English Language Testing System which tests English proficiency
across the globe. Conducting 1.4 million tests globally, IELTS is the world’s most popular
English testing system. IELTS tests are held in over 500 centers with tests up to four times a
month. IELTS respects international diversity and is fair to anyone who sits the test, regardless
of nationality.
You can choose from two types of IELTS test: Academic or General Training,
depending on whether you want to study, work or migrate. Both modules are made up of four
parts Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. IELTS results are graded on the unique IELTS
9-band scale.
Why Choose IELTS : IELTS tests all four language skills listening, reading, writing and
speaking. The Speaking test is a face-to-face interview with a certified Examiner. It is interactive
and as close to a real-life situation as a test can get.
Research shows that IELTS motivates test-takers to develop real and well-rounded
English rather than learning by rote. This means your understanding of English is improved and
valid for real life in an English-speaking country.
IELTS is owned by three reputable, international organizations. It has the highest quality control
and security procedures. More than 6000 organizations, including many government departments
and universities, rely on IELTS. The IELTS scoring system is recognized globally, giving you a
truly international result.
Academic and General Training
Academic Institutions of Higher and Further Education
The Academic format is, broadly speaking, for those who want to study or train in an English-
18
speaking university or Institutions of Higher and Further Education. Admission to undergraduate
and postgraduate courses is based on the results of the Academic test.
General Training for school, work or migration
The General Training format focuses on basic survival skills in broad social and workplace
context. It is typically for those who are going to English-speaking countries to do secondary
education, work experience or training programs. People migrating to Australia, Canada and
New Zealand must sit the General Training test.
It should be noted that certain professions require an Academic test result for registration and
migration purposes.
Who accepts IELTS
IELTS is the worlds proven test. Due to its high quality controls, IELTS is accepted by
thousands of organizations in over 135 countries.
Universities, schools, training colleges, tertiary institutes
Government departments and agencies
Professional and industry bodies
Multinational companies and employers

TOEFL - Test of English as Foreign Language
Test of English as a Foreign Language or TOEFL is a standardized test of English
language proficiency for non-native English language speakers wishing to enroll in U.S.
universities. The test is accepted by many English-speaking academic and professional
institutions. TOEFL is one of the two major English-language tests in the world, the other being
the IELTS.
TOEFL is a trademark of ETS (Educational Testing Service), a private non-profit
organization, which designs and administers the tests. The scores are valid for 2 years; then they
are no longer reported.
The TOEFL, paper-based Test (PBT) is available in limited areas. Scores are valid for two
years after the test date, and test takers can have their scores sent to institutions or agencies
during that time.
1. Listening (30 – 40 minutes)
The Listening section consists of 3 parts. The first one contains 30 questions about short
conversations. The second part has 8 questions about longer conversations. The last part
asks 12 questions about lectures or talks.
2. Structure and Written Expression (25 minutes)
The Structure and Written Expression section has 15 exercises of completing sentences
correctly and 25 exercises of identifying errors.
3. Reading Comprehension (55 minutes)
The Reading Comprehension sections have 50 questions about reading passages.
4. Writing (30 minutes)
20
The TOEFL PBT administrations include a writing test called the Test of Written English
(TWE). This is one essay question with 250–300 words in average
Test Score
Most colleges use TOEFL scores as only one factor in their admission process, with a
college or program within a college often setting a minimum TOEFL score required. The
minimum TOEFL iBT scores range from 61 (Bowling Green State University) to 110
(University of Oxford).

Important tips:
Aptitude test:
1) For Aptitude test, refer R.S. Aggarwal books – “Quantitative Aptitude” & “A Modern Approach
to Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning”.
Android users can also download 3 applications from Google Play Store:
Pocket Aptitude
Pocket Logical Reasoning
Pocket Verbal Ability
2) First solve all the English based sections in the Aptitude test, because they are completed in
comparatively less time. Then go for Math ability based section.
And solve the passage section & pattern based section at the last.
3) While solving the Aptitude test, keep a watch on time & save your answers at least every 5 min.
Interviews:
1) In both the interviews, the main focus is on English communication skills.
Be confident, polite& try to convert any interview into a ‘discussion mode’.
2) If the interviewer doesn’t ask about any participation / achievement you have done during the
academic years, tell it on your own with some enthusiasm & excitement.
Don’t wait for the interviewer to ask the same.
3) The most common question asked in any interview can be, “What do you know about our
Company?”
(The Interviewer is expecting the basic information like, what does the Company really do,
when was it established & who is its CEO, Founder, Vice Chairman, etc.)
So, find out everything about the company for which you are applying for.
104
Visit the company’s website. Find out the recent news about the company, awards won,
milestones accomplished, revenue, etc.
4) At the end, if the interviewer asks, “Do you have any questions for me?”ask questions like, ‘Can
you name some of your clients / partners?’, or, ’What are my skill requirements for doing this
job?’ or ‘What is the work culture in your company?’ , etc. Don’t be afraid to ask such relevant
questions. Speak.

Six Sigma at many organizations simply means a measure of quality that strives for near
perfection. Six Sigma is a disciplined, data-driven approach and methodology for eliminating
defects (driving toward six standard deviations between the mean and the nearest specification
limit) in any process – from manufacturing to transactional and from product to service.
The statistical representation of Six Sigma describes quantitatively how a process is
performing. To achieve Six Sigma, a process must not produce more than 3.4 defects per million
opportunities. A Six Sigma defect is defined as anything outside of customer specifications. A
Six Sigma opportunity is then the total quantity of chances for a defect.

Role of Production Engineering in Today’s World
Production Engineering in today’s world is a blooming course and has several vital applications
that can be utilized in the core based field of production. The course in both the master as well as
the bachelor level degree offer ample opportunities both nationally and internationally. However,
production engineering has critical role to play in the present era.
Production engineering is a completely production oriented course. The quality of the products
produced is to a large extent dependent on production engineering and with quality comes
standard. Therefore the production engineering lands in the standard arena which in turn is
related to the price control chains. Thus the course in turn is influencing the delicate balance of
demand-supply chain which is very critical in the present world. The list of influenced factor is
very long, thus these facts alone creates the opportunities to understand the role of production
engineering in the present world. The complex role does not end with the chains. Production
engineering is to some extent responsible for the health of the society and this role is vitally
played in the edible material production houses. Bad quality of any of these products is a direct
indication of the bad health of the society. Therefore the influence wing of the production
engineering has reached to this level. Thus the course of the production engineering has a crucial
role to play in today’s world. These related aspects makes us acquainted of the enormous
influence the course carry in our day to day lives.
