Abortion and Other Aspects Related to It

Abortion is the termination of a pregnancy by the removal or expulsion of a fetus or embryo from the uterus, resulting in or caused by its death.

In the United States Of America 4,000 abortion take place on an average day.

Worldwide, however, 42 million abortions are estimated to take place annually with 22 million of these occurring safely and 20 million unsafely.

While maternal mortality seldom results from safe abortions, unsafe abortions result in 70,000 deaths and 5 million disabilities per year.

History of Abortion

The practice of abortion dates back to ancient times.

Pregnancies were terminated through a number of methods, including the administration of abortifacient herbs, the use of sharpened implements, the application of abdominal pressure, and other techniques.

The first recorded evidence of induced abortion, is from the Egyptian Ebers Papyrus in 1550 BC.

According to Chinese folklore, the legendary Emperor Shennong prescribed the use of mercury to induce abortions nearly 5000 years ago.

Many of the methods employed in early and primitive cultures were non-surgical.

Physical activities like strenuous labor, climbing, paddling, weightlifting, or diving were a common technique. Others included the use of irritant leaves, fasting, bloodletting, pouring hot water onto the abdomen, and lying on a heated coconut shell.

In primitive cultures, techniques developed through observation, adaptation of obstetrical methods, and transculturation.

Archaeological discoveries indicate early surgical attempts at the extraction of a fetus; however, such methods are not believed to have been common, given the infrequency with which they are mentioned in ancient medical texts.

Japanese documents show records of induced abortion from as early as the 12th century.

It became much more prevalent during the Edo period, especially among the peasant class, who were hit hardest by the recurrent famines and high taxation of the age.

Statues of the Boddhisattva Jizo, erected in memory of an abortion, miscarriage, stillbirth, or young childhood death, began appearing at least as early as 1710 at a temple in Yokohama.

They therefore found abortion morally acceptable. The Greek playwright Aristophanes noted the abortifacient property of pennyroyal in 421 BC, through a humorous reference in his comedy, Peace.

In Rome, abortion was practiced with little or no sense of shame.

There were also opposing voices, most notably Hippocrates of Cos and the Roman Emperor Augustus.

Aristotle wrote that, The line between lawful and unlawful abortion will be marked by the fact of having sensation and being alive.

In contrast to their pagan environment, Christians generally shunned abortion, drawing upon early Christian writings such as the Didache which says

"…do not murder a child by abortion or kill a new-born infant."

However, his beliefs on earlier- stage abortion were similar to Aristotle's, though he could neither deny nor affirm whether such unformed fetuses

would be resurrected as full people at the time of the second coming.

In the mid to late 19th century, during the fight for women's suffrage in the U.S., many first-wave feminists, such as Elizabeth Cady Stanton opposed abortion

In the newspaper she operated with Susan B. Anthony, The Revolution, an anonymous contributor signing "A" wrote in 1869 about the subject, arguing that instead of merely attempting to pass a law against abortion, the root cause must also be addressed.

Simply passing an anti-abortion law would, the writer stated, "be only mowing off the top of the noxious weed, while the root remains.

No matter what the motive, love of ease, or a desire to save from suffering the unborn innocent, the woman is awfully guilty who commits the deed.

It will burden her conscience in life, it will burden her soul in death; thrice guilty is he who drove her to the desperation which impelled her to the crime."

Around 1970, during second-wave feminism, abortion and reproductive rights were unifying issues among various women's rights groups in Canada, the United States, the Netherlands, Britain, Norway, France, Germany, and Italy.

 In the United States, abortion laws began to appear in the 1820s, forbidding abortion after the fourth month of pregnancy.

Most abortions in the US had been outlawed by 1900

Illegal abortions were still frequent, though they became less frequent during the reign of the Comstock Law which essentially banned birth control information and devices.

Some early feminists, like Susan B. Anthony, wrote against abortion.

They opposed abortion which at the time was an unsafe medical procedure for women, endangering their health and life.

These feminists believed that only the achievement of women's equality and freedom would end the need for abortion. They wrote that prevention was more important than punishment, and blamed circumstances, laws and the men they believed drove women to abortions.

By 1965, all fifty states banned abortion

with some exceptions which varied by state: to save the life of the mother, in cases of rape or incest, or if the fetus was deformed.

Groups like the National Abortion Rights Action League and the Clergy Consultation Service on

Abortion worked to liberalize anti-abortion laws.

 

The Supreme Court in 1973, in the case of Roe v. Wade, declared most existing state abortion laws unconstitutional.

Roe v. Wade is the historic SupremeCourt decision overturning a Texas interpretation of abortion law and making abortion legal in the United States that took place on January 22, 1973.

Roe v. Wade affected all state laws limiting women's access to abortions during the first trimester of pregnancy were invalidated by Roe v. Wade.

This decision ruled out any legislative interference in the first trimester of pregnancy and put limits on what restrictions could be passed on abortions in later stages of pregnancy.

The Roe v. Wade decision held that a woman, with her doctor, could choose abortion in earlier months of pregnancy without restriction, and with restrictions in later months, based on the right to privacy.

State laws limiting such access during the second trimester were upheld only when the restrictions were for the purpose of protecting the health of the pregnant woman. Roe v. Wade legalized abortion in the United States, which was not legal at all in many states and was limited by law in others.

Roe v. Wade was decided primarily on the Ninth Amendment to the United States Constitution, a part of the Bill of Rights.

The Court's decision in this case was that the Ninth Amendment, in stating that "the enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people," protected a person's right to privacy.

The alias "Jane Roe" was used for Norma McCorvey, on whose behalf the suit was originally filed, alleging that the abortion law in Texas violated her constitutional rights and the rights of other women. The defendant was the district attorney of Dallas County, Texas, Henry B. Wade.

Sarah Weddington and Linda Coffee were the plaintiff's lawyers. John Tolle, Jay Floyd and Robert Flowers were the defendant’s lawyers.

Today the woman who fought for Row v. Wade is now against the whole thing.

She spends hertime fighting for the overturn of Roe V. Wade and the end of abortion. Like many other women who have abortions, they usually regret it.

They spend there time in depression, starve them selves, and many other things. Some even end up commenting suicide. Others stand up to end abortion.

Abortion Pill  & Mifepristone:

within 4 to 7 weeks after Last Menstrual PeriodThis drug commonly known as RU486is only approved for women up to the 49th day after their last menstrual period.

The procedure usually requires three office visits. On the first visit, the woman is given pills to cause the death of the embryo. Two days later, if the abortion has not occurred, she is given a second drug which causes cramps to expel the embryo.

The last visit is to determine if the procedure has been completed.  The abortion pill will not work in the case of an ectopic pregnancy.

An ectopic pregnancy is a potentially life-threatening condition in which the embryo lodges outside of the uterus, usually in the fallopian tube.  If not diagnosed early, the tube may burst, causing internal bleeding and in some cases, the death of the woman

Women are being instructed to use the abortion pills in a manner not approved by the FDA.  This includes using it beyond 49 days of pregnancy and using it vaginally.  A number of women who have used the abortion pill have died due to sepsis (full body infection). 

Manual Vacuum Aspiration:

within seven weeks after Last Menstrual Period.This surgical abortion is done early in the pregnancy, up until seven weeks after the woman’s last menstrual period.

The cervix is dilated enough for the abortion instruments to pass into the uterus.  A long, thin tube is inserted into the uterus.  A large syringe is attached to the tube and the embryo is suctioned out

Suction Curettage:

within 6 to 14 weeks after Last Menstrual PeriodThis is the most common surgical abortion procedure. Because the fetus is larger, the doctor must first dilate or stretch open the cervix.  Metal rods or laminaria (thin sticks derived from seaweed) are inserted hours before the procedure begins.

Opening the cervix may be painful, so local or general anesthesia is typically needed, although sometimes not used. After the cervix is stretched open, the doctor inserts plastic tubing into the uterus, and then connects this tubing to a suction machine.

The suction pulls the fetus’ body apart and out of the uterus. The doctor may also use a loop-shaped knife called a curette to scrape the fetus and fetal parts out of the uterus.

Dilation and Evacuation

(D&E):

within 13 to 24 weeks after Last Menstrual Period This surgical abortion is done during the second trimester of pregnancy. At this point in the pregnancy, the fetus is too large to be broken up by suction alone and will not pass through the suction tubing.

In this procedure, the cervix must be opened wider than in a first trimester abortion. This is done by inserting numerous thin rods made of seaweed (called laminaria) a day or two before the abortion. Once the cervix is stretched open the doctor pulls out the fetal parts with forceps.

The fetus’ skull is crushed to ease removal. A sharp tool (called a curette) is also used to scrape out the contents of the uterus, removing any remaining tissue.

Late Term Abortions: Dilation and Extraction (D&X) – Partial Birth:

from 20 weeks after Last Menstrual Period to full-termThis procedure usually takes three days.  During the first two days the cervix is dilated and medication is given for cramping. On the third day the woman receives medication to start labor. .

After labor begins, the abortionist uses ultrasound to locate the baby’s legs.  Grasping a leg with forceps, the doctor delivers the baby up to the baby’s head (similar to a breech delivery).  Then scissors are inserted into the base of the baby’s skull to create an opening.  A suction tube is inserted into the opening to remove the contents of the skull, killing the baby.  The skull collapses and the baby is removed

Pro-Life is a term used to refer to a group of people whose goal is to end all forms of unnatural death.

They respect life from the moment of conception to the end of life due to natural death. This means treating people like they would want to be treated and how they would treat Jesus because Jesus is in everyone!

In original sin we became no longer perfect. So it’s natural to make fun of people, and talk behind there back, but people who are Pro- Life remember the fifth commandment; You shall not murder”.

Even though talking behind someone’s back or making fun of them may not be “killing” them it still breaks the fifth commandment. You are not physically but emotionally killing this person that was created by Jesus Christ.

Many people think, Pro-life describes the political and ethical opposition to elective abortion, and support for its legal prohibition or restriction.

But Pro-Life is more than that! It’s a lifestyle! Where people respect all life despite gender, race, age or social ranking.

The pro-life position is commonly supported among several Christian and Muslim countries.

The pro-life movement believes that any act that violates the sanctity of human life is morally wrong and seeks legal steps to declare such acts as illegal.

The movement calls for respect for every form of human life, whether it is an unborn child, a crippled or disabled person, elderly people, or the terminally ill. The movement advocates that every human being is worthy of dignity and must be respected from the moment of fertilization till the moment of their death.

The pro-life movement is opposite to the pro-choice movement that advocates that every human being should have the freedom to choose on all aspects of their life, including abortion.

Adoption is one of the three options when it comes to conceiving a child.

In many cases adoption is when a family becomes legal parents of a child they did not birth.

Adoption is the option when it comes to someone who can not for there own reason support a child. Adoption is a better option than abortion!

Why you may ask? Well there are several reasons.

•Adoption doesn’t lead to the death of a child God made• It gives parents who may not of been able to have children, children.•It gives a child at living life to its fullest.

28 days - eye, ear and respiratory system begin to form.

42 days - brain waves recorded, skeleton complete, reflexes present.

7 weeks - photo of thumb sucking.

8 weeks - all body systems present.

9 weeks - squints, swallows, moves tongue, makes fist.

11 weeks - spontaneous movements, has fingernails, all body systems working.

12 weeks - weighs one ounce.

16 weeks - genital organs clearly differentiated, grasps with hands, swims, kicks, turns, somersaults, (still not felt by the mother.)

18 weeks - vocal cords work – can cry.

20 weeks - has hair on head, weighs one pound, 12 inches long.

23 weeks - 15% chance of viability outside of womb if birth premature.

24 weeks - 56% of babies survive premature birth.

25 weeks - 79% of babies survive premature birth

Four out of ten unintended pregnancies end in abortion.

Out of the total number of pregnancies, 24% end in abortion.

Women who have never been married account for 2/3rds of all abortions

7 out of every 10 women who have an abortion regret it.8 out 10 women who have abortions end up with health related issues due to the abortion. 4 out of 10 women who have an abortion will never have children due to their abortion.

Laws abortion started to appear in the 1820’s. By the 1900 abortion in the US was outlawed. The case of Row v. Wade changed these laws.
