Mohair producers no longer pay levies in South Africa, as they have a now set up a trust fund, which currently contains over 180 million Rand (approx A$36 million) Some of these funds are used to run their organisation, and for promotion, development of the industry etc and they have also decided to put a ‘floor price’ on all their Mohair, which they will support with their trust funds. Their political situation is such that the government would like to see approximately 1/3 of all farms in possession of the black community within the next 15 years. Their production costs appear a lot lower than ours. An example is that they pay approximately 2 Rand to shear a goat - in Australia we would pay the equivalent of between 11 and 15 Rand for shearing the same animal. Another interesting sideline is that they don’t use working dogs, instead, their staff walk long distances to round up all their goats in the vast paddocks. At the Expo, set up on the foreshore Boardwalk in front of the Casino at Port Elizabeth, we saw some more fabulous goats, commercial and stud, in pens of seven generating a lot of interest with the general public in attendance. Continued page 14

Continued from page 1 From there we traveled to the 2007 Mohair Expo at Port Elizabeth. Whilst there I was able to have a meeting with the President of Mohair America, Pierce Miller, and the President of Mohair South Africa, Reinholdt du Randt and his Board. Reinholdt is determined to have dialogue with all Mohair producing nations, the theme being that we all need to stick together to further the industry. The Americans are working on innovative Mohair products such as individually designed carpet and horse equipment to value add. Samples of their products were on display.

VALE - Prof Jack Evans Thanks to Jenny Anderson (Airlie Stud) for advising us of Jack’s death.

One of the pioneering academics who helped Professor Bill McClymont achieve his vision for the now world-renowned Rural Science program at the University of New England, Emeritus Professor Jack Evans, died on Wednesday 11 April aged 84.

Many Armidale residents of today would recognise Professor Evans as a bearded, quietly sociable man who cut a striking figure despite being confined, in his final years, to an electric scooter. But few would know of the legacy he left UNE. A New Zealand-born veterinarian, Jack Evans (pictured here) was appointed Associate Professor of Physiology in the Faculty of Rural Science in 1957. He was responsible for setting up the Physiology Department’s facilities and courses after its creation in 1960 and was appointed to the Chair in Physiology in 1964, receiving a Doctor of Science degree from UNE in 1965. Excepting a short break, he remained Head of Department of Physiology until 1982 and was, for a time, Dean of Science.

The creation of the Rural Science program and Department of Physiology established degrees offered at Bachelor's, Master's and PhD levels. Dr Richard Passey, a former Senior Lecturer in Biochemsitry, Sub-Dean of Science, and Master of Wright College, said, “Jack Evans always expressed his views strongly. Sometimes we agreed and sometimes we didn't, but no one ever pulled rank. He was honest, upright and honourable. He was a very good person."

After his retirement, the University honoured Jack Evans by making him an Emeritus Professor. He went on to pursue his interest in mohair goat breeding, becoming Inaugural President of the Goat Industry Council of Australia in 1988. Jack was the Vice President of the Angora Breed Society in 1981 and was involved in the negotiations that resulted in the amalgamation of the ABS and AMBA in 1982. He then became Vice President of AMBA. Jack’s major contribution to our industry was in the preparation of a series of Technical Notes (“the green pages”) that appeared in both the ABS bulletin and the AMBA journal for many years. Jack was always available to speak at seminars and was enthusiastically involved in his angora stud “Te Marua”. He was awarded an Honourary Life Membership of Mohair Aust.

In 1996 he and his wife Jean moved into a house in Armidale, while maintaining his cherished goat herd on 80 ha of rural property.

He leaves behind his wife Jean and children John and Lynleigh Evans and Christine Hanbury-Brown. The funeral took place on Saturday 14 April at 10.30 am in Armidale.

It pays to Advertise your goats for sale

Malcolm and Barbara Fraser, “Cumberdeen” angora stud, from Mandurama, between Cowra and Blaney in NSW, visited the office in Narrandera recently. It was very pleasing to hear them report that they have been able to sell angoras to other breeders some of whom are new breeders, rather than ship them off to the abattoir. They advertised any angoras they had to sell by placing advertisements in the “LIVESTOCK—GOATS “ classifieds section of the LAND newspaper. They have done this each year when they have angoras for sale, and have always sold them, “It is money well spent, and advertises our stud at the same time “ Malcolm said. Their cast for age animals (CFA) however, are still sold direct to the abattoir.

It has been very disappointing in recent times, to hear of so many angoras that have been sold to the abattoirs when they are still producing valuable mohair. WHY NOT advertise them in the rural press, in our news sheet, on our website or through your broker ??? - you may be able to help increase Australian Mohair production by keeping these animals alive. This office only hears about animals that need to be sold via the “producer grapevine”, and typically—after they have been sold to the abattoirs—very rarely before. Potential new breeders, who have been reading the reports on the industry in the rural press or from our website, look in the classified advertisements under Goats if they are considering buying animals. WE NEED MORE MOHAIR and we cannot achieve this with animals being sent to slaughter whenever a producer needs to reduce the number of animals on their property. It is assumed that cast for age animals will be sold for slaughter but we need every angora wether and doe that is not CFA alive. ONLINE SELLING & BUYING OF LIVESTOCK—Another Option Sandie Smith advised that she had spoken to Kylie and Phil Moores, at the Tocal Field Days and Mick Doak, in his April Update also mentioned www.onlinelivestock.com.au as a worthwhile method of listing animals for sale nationally. Kylie and Phil have now placed an advert in our News sheet. (see below)

GOAT MANAGEMENT FOR JUNE—Mick Doak Western Australia June is one of the catch up months for many Goat breeders:

· If your bucks have not been taken out of the does then now is the time. · Keep breeding does on a maintenance feed until there is a good green pick of grass and other

vegetation. · Keep up the supply of roughage in the form of hay or straw. It is best to have it covered in racks

or fed out in enough quantity not to be wasted with the price it is this year. · Rest proposed kidding paddocks. · Give all animals a cobalt, selenium or copper supplement if it is needed in your area. · A mineral supplement is a must all year round for goats. There are some very good mineral

supplement licks and blocks around now so no animals should be lacking in minerals as was experienced by many in the past.

· A drench for internal parasites plus a lice treatment is a good idea before you place the females in a fresh kidding paddock. Resistant worms can be encouraged by under drenching so always drench to the heaviest animal in the mob. A internal parasite test or worm count is now avail-able and can save money and work drenching if it is found not to be required.

· Angoras may need to be crutched and wigged. · A vaccination program for your breeding females giving them protection from Pulpy Kidney and

Tetanus, including Cheesy Gland is a good idea. A booster for breeders 6 weeks before kidding will give them protection and give their offspring an initial protection from the mothers milk.

· Guardian animals such as Anatolian shepherd dogs and Alpacas need to be settled in with their new flock well before kidding. Make sure the Alpaca actually is a going to become part of the flock and not just one that spends all its time going up and down a fence line away from the flock fretting for human or alpaca company.

· Fox control should also start well before kidding as there seems to be many of them around at this time of the year once again.

Latest Research The following report is available in full from the RIRDC website or on paper from RIRDC

Producing and marketing quality mohair

By B.A. McGregor February 2007 RIRDC Publication No 07/026 RIRDC Project No DAV 209A

Summary of Report There is little objective information on the production characteristics or the market evaluation of mohair produced by modern genotypes of Australian Angora goats. For the mohair industry to be attractive to investors it must increase returns to existing producers and provide current economic and production data. This project worked with mohair selling agents and producers to develop new information on the production of premium quality mohair. This project has demonstrated that the mohair market is highly predictive and discriminating against coarse mohair. Improved nutrition and shearing practices can improve both the production and quality of harvested mohair from young weaned Angora goats. Mohair producers can use the materials developed during this project to improve their fleece quality, production, classing and sale. Mohair classing procedures should be modified to reduce the sale of coarser mohair with

Tocal Field Days 2007 Continued from previous page This event, now in it’s 24th year and Hunter Region proud to have presented the mohair industry at them all, still draws excellent crowds this year reported at around a total of 28,000. The fact that agriculture continues to be the distinctly dominant theme appears to be the major reason for the good attendance, an attendance made up of people from all parts of the community. Situated in the Livestock Area amongst cattle, boer goats, varied breeds of sheep and alpaca, the Hunter Region display consisted of varied examples of both hand crafted and commercially produced mohair products, much of which was for sale. This display, a small number of young angora does and a display of mohair fleeces were responsible for an encouraging number of what appeared to be serious inquiries into the mohair industry. Handouts and Information Packs were an invaluable and essential aid with these types of inquiries.

Results of election announced at AGM – i.e. Voting for elected members is conducted BEFORE the AGM. Proxies to be announced at the start of the meeting and the lists given to the appointed Proxy holders. Note—Division Executives under By-Law 1 can elect to have any number of elected members, the only mandatory requirement being an equal number of nominees submitted by each Region topped up by elected members to a maximum total of 14. Again the total number of 14 is not mandatory; only up to 14 in total. Voting Paper – Section 8 of By-Law 1 Validate nominations and list these in strict alphabetical order by surname. All posted ballot papers should be initialled in red pen by the returning officer. The ballot paper shall identify the number of members of the Division Executive to be elected. A cross or a tick should be placed in a square opposite the names of the candidates for whom he wishes to vote. The voter shall only cast his votes for the number of candidates required (ie if there are 10 candidates and only 6 places on the executive for elected members a voter can only place 6 marks on the ballot paper)but you can vote for less than the number required. If the voter marks more than the number required his vote shall be deemed invalid. Ballot Paper envelopes should be plain and labelled “BALLOT PAPER”. The ballot paper shall be placed in this envelope, sealed and placed in another envelope addressed to the returning officer which has on the reverse the name and address of the voter. If these details are not completed the returning officer will declare the ballot invalid i.e. not to be counted. In the case of the Division Executives where nominations equal or are less than that required, the Returning Officer declares those nominated as elected and there are no ballot papers sent out; there is no election!!

P.S. I think we are starting to catch up to them on quality of mohair with the manager of the Mo-hair warehouse indicating Australian Mohair is very good and improving, we just need to be careful of the “kemp factor”.

We visited Cape Mohair & Wool, had an informal meeting with Dr Jan van der Westhuysen CEO of CMW, and a visited their shop and warehouse. It was fantastic to see so much Mohair in one place. On the Friday and Saturday nights were two functions. One for the “Miyuki” Award (Japanese) won by G.T. Ferreria and the other for the “Zegna” Trophy (Italians) won by Piet Viljoen The events were great with a fashion parade of exquisite outfits from a collection by Leandra Fourie. Most garments were made of a blend of 65% Mohair combined with wool and/or cotton, although some were pure Mohair. Most of the garments in the range were suitable to be worn in everyday life, not just on the catwalk. The last four days of our trip we spent sightseeing along the South African Coast. In summary the South Africans have a great country, similar weather and countryside to the drier parts of Australia. Hospitality was of the highest order, and lots and lots of very good goats producing fabulous Mohair.

Above and right—Whether evening gowns or wedding dresses, the mohair fashions on the catwalk were meant to be wearable and stylish

Left—Yearling Does off shears—”Peas in a pod” - Angoras off shears in South Af-rica react to bad weather in much the same way as Australian goats and there can be substantial losses.

MOHAIR PRICES EASE AT THE CAPE A combination of a stronger SA currency and pressure on international prices of semi-processed mohair, had a negative effect on mohair prices on the fifth summer sale of 2007 held 8th May 2007. Virtually all gains of the previous sale were wiped out. The price resistance against the adult market, especially from the East, also played a role during the sale to create a bit of uncertainty amongst buyers. Demand, however, stays good and no reason for pessimism is necessaryThe overall market indicator of Mohair SA was 6.9% down, mainly due to the rather sharp decrease of 10.7% in the price for adult mohair. The kid price was marginally down by 1.3 % and the young goat price followed the stronger Rand to be 4.2 % lower. With regard to kid mohair, the decrease could be attributed to the fact that more expensive types were not traded on the auction, but by way of contract sales, which do not reflect in the price. The 6th sale of the summer season is scheduled for 29 May 2007.
