Spring has finally sprung! With one of the most brutal winters weatherwise behind us, we are all looking forward to the delights of spring-time, with all the outdoor events in our near
future, we are itching to get out of the house to enjoy this season’s fresh air! A fun outside and free event is the annual Holmdel’s Bayonet Farm Earth Day Festival, which will be held on April 28. This is a wonderful out-door experience for the whole family, check out page 18 for more information.
This season is also a time for new beginnings. In last month’s note from the editor, I mentioned that many businesses that were damaged from Hurricane Sandy are now reopening with a renewed sense of pride. I ask all of our readers to reach out to them, support the small businesses in and around your town, and lets con-tinue to make “Jersey Strong” with our determination, compassion, and strength.

Matawan Regional High School Student Council joined together with Matawan PBA Local#179 and Aberdeen PBA Local#163 to host a charity volleyball tournament on March 8. The event was held to benefit
Restore the Bayshore, a locally-based organization that continues to assist in the relief efforts following Superstorm Sandy. The event raised over $1,400. The tournament itself was a fierce competition between high school students, faculty, Matawan PBA Local#179 and Aberdeen PBA Local#163. The teachers won over the students with a 28-26 score. Matawan PBA Local#179 beat Aberdeen PBA Local#163. It was an all-around great time right to the very end!

Restore the Bayshore volunteers were onsite selling their merchandise – one of the crowd favorites was the emerald green merchandise – which came in handy for Saint Patrick’s Day.

RAINE and Gateway Church of Christ joined together on March 8 to offer a special night to area families that were affected by Hurricane Sandy. Their “Hollywood Family Movie Night” was filled with surprises and great fun. It
was truly a “red carpet night” and all of it was free! Raritan High School (RHS) Rocket Cheer Team performed and RHS Rocket Band played just outside the school’s front entrance as guests arrived.
A specially made doorway listing Gateway at the top of one side and RAINE on the other led guests to the main hallway of the school, where RAINE, Gateway, and RHS student volunteers offered free top hats and bead necklaces. Thanks goes out to the RHS football team who assisted in setting up for this event, noted Patti Dickens, co-founder of RAINE.
Children were able to have their picture taken with live bun-nies free of charge by Peter Dant, a Hazlet photographer who has been a longtime supporter of RAINE. He wanted everyone to feel special and to enjoy the night, said Mrs. Dickens. Most of the families who arrived, about 250 people, were from Ha-zlet, Union Beach and Keansburg, she noted. Entering the caf-eteria, the families were told to help themselves to pizza, which was catered by Giuseppe’s, Salerno’s, and Big Mike’s Deli. Once done, the younger children played games in the back of the caf-eteria led by RAINE and Gateway volunteers. Lisa Auletta creat-ed a unique “ice skating game” for the tiny tots as well as many other special games. Moms were treated to a new spring coat donated by Holiday Express via Tower Hill Church. And the fun and giveaways just kept happening!
Adding to the fun were Ryan Dickens and Nick Capachano dressed in life-size panda and tiger costumes who played with the little ones. A game of “eat a cookie with no hands” proved to be a hit! Following all the games, the guests saw Disney Pixar movie, “UP.”
Carl Williamson of Gateway Church of Christ said his volun-teers have been working closely with RAINE since Sandy hit the area. “For tonight, we just wanted to create a fun family event – to offer a special environment that would get them out to have some fun!” Gateway was in Union Beach the day after Sandy hit, and with only 50 members who opened their church less than two years ago, they are determined to stay here and continue to help the entire Bayshore community. Mark Zielinski, in charge of Gateway’s youth and family groups said the night was a huge success. “We were hoping to provide a night of family fun for those affected in the Bayshore area, and it was rewarding to see so many smiles. We had very positive feedback. I overheard a number of kids tell their families how much fun they were hav-ing, and another parent say what a treat this night was for them. We were so blessed with the opportunity to do this and are hop-ing to hold similar family-oriented events in the near future.”
RAINE President Mike Fabozzi said, “We are proud that we were able to bring families together for a night out. Families are so concentrated on rebuilding their homes and getting back a sense of normalcy that we felt this was a great opportunity for us to give them a break and enjoy a night out with their fami-ly. We focus on children and their families so this event was a perfect fit for our mission. Families were extremely thankful and many commended our volunteers for their hard work and ded-ication to helping all of the people who were affected by Hurri-cane Sandy.”

The 8th Annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade was held on March 23, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. Hundreds of people lined the streets of Keyport that day showing off their Irish Pride! The Grand Marshall was Harry Aumack, Sr., the Deputy Marshall was Chris Petrizzo. Many
organizations and clubs participated in the parade, as well as five Pipe Bands marching. Bands played at McDonaghs Pub on West Front Street for everyone’s listening pleasure. In its eighth year, this one fact remains, everyone is Irish at the Keyport St. Patrick’s Day Parade!

Washington Engine Company’s Third Annual Shortest St. Patrick’s Day Parade was held on March 15, 2013. This parade is dubbed the shortest St. Patrick’s Day Parade, at a whopping 0.2 mile march along Jackson Street in Matawan, but don’t let the length of the pa-
rade compare to the enthusiastic Irish Pride seen that Friday night! Many people dressed in green lined the sidewalks, while the street had painted shamrocks down the entire parade route. The Grand Marshall was Bogey Costello, a Ma-tawan Resident; Jill Chaney was the Grand Colleen; Matawan Firefighter Leroy Sickles was honorary Irish firefighter; Honorary Irish police officer was Brian Murphy; and the honorary Irishman was Eric Weber of Pavers Plus. Fire trucks from Aberdeen, Keyport and Matawan, classic cars and scouts (both boys and girls) marched in the parade – after the parade, everyone was invited back to Washington Engine Company for some Irish fare – corned beef and cabbage!

Bayshore Community Hospital today announced a generous donation from Evaristo (Evey) and Tam-mi Stanziale of Holmdel, NJ. The Stanziale fami-ly felt strongly about supporting Bayshore’s vision
after having several positive experiences with Bayshore and Meridian Health over the past two decades. In recog-nition of their generous gift, the Surgical Services Lounge on the first floor of Bayshore will be dedicated to the Stan-ziale family.
“We are very grateful for the generous support of the Stanziale family – they are an example of proactive and impactful philanthropy touching many lives through the good work and growth of Bayshore Community Hospi-tal,” says David Flood, president of the Meridian Health Affiliated Foundations. “As Meridian Health continues to enhance the breadth and depth of services at Bayshore Community Hospital, gifts such as this one are critical to fund new technologies and programs that save and en-hance lives.”
Bayshore Community Hospital and Meridian Health have played a major role in the lives of the Stanziale family. For nearly 20 years, Evey and his family have appreciated the excellent level of care provided by Meridian’s facilities. At only ten years old, Evey’s son Michael, now 17, was di-agnosed with a cyst in his neck that required immediate surgery at K. Hovnanian’s Children Hospital, part of Jersey

Shore University Medical Center. Then, during Labor Day weekend of 2012, Evey avoided being struck by a motorist while driving a scooter down at the Jersey shore. Evey’s wrist was crushed in the incident and he insisted in the ambulance that he be brought to a Meridian facility. The skilled surgical team, led by a hand special-ist at Ocean Medical Center repaired Evey’s wrist. And in October of 2012, Evey arrived at the Emergency Care Center at Bayshore Community Hospital for treat-ment of an infection. He was thrilled once again at the speed and efficiency of his care – something he expected from a Meridian hospital.
“I was truly astounded at the level of care and the compassion that I saw all around me,” says Evey Stanziale. “Meridian Health and Bayshore have played a piv-otal role in the well-being of our family for many years, and we want this donation to serve as inspiration for others to donate to their local hospital as well.”
In addition to the generous financial support from Evey and Tammi, Evey de-cided that a monetary donation was simply not enough. Evey recently joined as a Trustee at the Bayshore Community Hospital Foundation.
“I wanted to not only support the hospital financially, but also wanted to give of my time, energy, and expertise,” says Evey. “For those community members that haven’t been to Bayshore in a while, you’ll be blown away by the changes that have been made and those slated for the near future – this is a new day here in our com-munity.”
“Over the past two and a half years, we’ve developed a clear, strategic plan that positions Bayshore Community Hospital for the future and provides the best ex-perience for our patients and guests, says Timothy J. Hogan, FACHE, regional president of Bayshore Community Hospital and Riverview Medical Center. “The generosity of the Stanziale family affords Bayshore the opportunity to further de-liver on our promise to the community.”

Raritan High School Key Club held their first an-nual Fashion Show at the school on February 26. The proceeds from this event will be divided be-tween the American Red Cross and RHS families
directly affected by Superstorm Sandy. Just over 30 Ha-zlet students from the Early Childhood Learning Center through eighth grade were the models and were able to choose from six categories of apparel.
“The fashion show went off without a hitch and the Key Club couldn’t be more proud of all of the children and the moms who assisted backstage. All of them strutted their stuff down the runway and had so much fun. We are all enthusiastic for next year when we will be improving upon this amazing event,” said President Mikaela Grande.
RHS Key Club is co-advised by Ms. Sarah Walsh, who teaches English and Mr. Gregory Casha, Special Education Teacher and Varsity Baseball Assistant Coach. Mr. Casha said the event was an amazing success. “We set the bar for the event, and with all of the hard work, the Key Club easily exceeded these already lofty expectations. We had a lot of question marks going into the week of the show but everyone came through in the clutch when it was show time. The club literally looked like a bunch of bees swarming around the high school the day of the fashion show. I was so delighted to witness the club, as a whole, come together and bond, pull their sleeves up, and put all the pieces together in time for the show. Once the red carpet was rolled out, I was filled with joy reflecting on how much effort was put into the event in such a short time period. I still cannot believe it turned out the way it did. When push came to shove, we raised $535 for the American Red Cross and local Hurricane Sandy victims.”
He noted that parents raved about the show directly after, and he received multiple passionate emails from parents describing how much fun their child had. “The audience was packed and I was floored by the generosity from the community! I am so thankful to be a part of such a determined and hardworking group of students. They really took the ball and ran with it on this, and words cannot describe how much I admire and applaud their respective actions. I would once again like to thank our Administrative Staff for giving us the opportunity to put on such a show!” Chocolate Village of Hazlet generously donated to this event.

Strathmore Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) re-cently donated 17 iPads and cases to Strathmore Elementary School. “There is now one iPad in each classroom,” said Helen Sferrazza, who shares the
duties of President of the PTO with co-president Nancy Nappi. Presently, the iPad is shared by students throughout the day.
“Our goal is to have at least 4 iPads in each classroom,” said Ms. Sferrazza. As the PTO continues its fundraising ef-forts, they will purchase more iPads. “We will continue to do this into next year,” explained Ms. Sferrazza. She noted that some children have iPads at home and parents realized what a useful tool they were. “We asked the teachers how they would use the iPads if we purchased them. The third grade teachers said they would be used during Math; the first grade teachers chose the Literacy Center.
“I met and discussed the idea with the Executive Board of the PTO, we voted and agreed to start the process,” not-ed Ms. Sferrazza. “We asked the principal, Mrs. Bera if this was something the school would accept, and she said yes.” Their intention was then announced at two PTO meetings, and no objections were given by the parents. “Everyone unanimously agreed that we should purchase them,” add-ed Ms. Sferrazza.

Everyone was Irish at the St. Patrick’s Day Party held on March 16 at North Centerville Volun-teer Fire Company firehouse. Most everyone who attended wore some splash of green, while
some dressed to impress with their green glasses, wild Irish hats, and dangling bead necklaces.
A DJ playing continuous great music, a buffet-style corned beef dinner, green beer or “regular” as well as wine were all included in the entry fee. The bartenders, chefs, and servers were firefighters from North Cen-terville’s Fire Company. Laughter, good food, friends, dancing – it all added up to a fun-filled night. And the proceeds were all going to an important cause. “All of the proceeds from this event will go toward the con-struction cost of North Centerville’s 9/11 Memorial. We want to create a fitting Memorial in front of the fire-house,” explained Chief Andrew Christ. The fire com-pany brought home two steel beams, pieces from the World Trade Center, on August 29. The beams are ap-proximately five feet in length and 200 pounds each.

Academy Award Nominee David Magee, the screen writer of the films Finding Neverland (2004) and Life of Pi (2012) spoke to 300 Raritan High School stu-dents on March 12th. David discussed his early career
as a theater actor and how he did whatever it took to stay in the business. This included working as a stage carpenter and doing voiceovers on “how to” audio books for children. David then began writing for a publisher where he annotated approx-imately 85 books in five years. After years of experience writing and acting, David seized the opportunity to write and adapt a play, which eventually became the film Finding Neverland. This earned David his first Academy Award nomination.
David then told the story of reading the book Life of Pi and feeling that although it was a excellent story, it was impossible to make into a movie. That was until Academy Award winning Director Ang Lee expressed interest in having David adapt the book into a screenplay. “When I heard Ang Lee was interest-ed in making the film, I realized Life of Pi would make a great movie!” David said jokingly to the students. Over the next four years David wrote and went on location to Taiwan where the movie was filmed in a 100 foot by 300 foot man-made lake at an abandoned airport. After filming there was still a year of post-production computer work, before the movie could be was released. Since Pi’s release it has made over $600 million dollars world-wide, won four Academy Awards, and earned Da-vid his second nomination for screenwriting.
Students from English, Drama, Journalism, Television Pro-duction, and Global Communication classes enjoyed listening to stories and asking questions about writing the script, filming the movie, and how to get started in show business. The stu-dents were inspired by David’s message and were encouraged to achieve their creative dreams. The heart of David’s mes-sage came when he told students “Whether you are interested in Theater or the Arts, want to be a Rock Star or write movies, Paint or Draw, you can get into those fields, it is not impossible, it does not matter where you live or if have connections, and I am proof of that.”
This message was taken seriously by RHS Senior Alexa Zamo-ra who said, “David was so engaging and he inspired me to pur-sue my dream of working in the Arts, I know I can accomplish my goals!” Teachers and students felt the same about David’s message and many stayed after his talk to ask questions, hear more stories, and have him sign autographs. Will Smith, the RHS Principal concluded “Rarely do students get to see someone who has walked the walk and used his writing skills and his love of the story bring so much enjoyment to others. It was really a great opportunity for our students.”

This summer Jersey Shore Workcamp V & VI and St. John’s United Methodist Church are planning to repair 150-200 homes in the Bayshore area July 7-13 & 14-20, 2013. Eight hundred and fifty Christian youth and their leaders
will be living in Keansburg High School and going into the local communities to make repairs. Anyone who is of low-income, handicapped or elderly qualifies. The youth will paint exteriors, interiors, build wheelchair ramps and repair steps and porches for needy homeowners.
Each camper pays $459.00 to participate, plus travel expenses and Jersey Shore Workcamp V & VI and St. John’s United Meth-odist Church are raising over $60,000 for supplies & materials. There is no cost to the homeowners. The need is great and the economy has hurt many people on limited incomes. Hurricane Sandy has added to the need for volunteers to help their neigh-bors.
They co-sponsor with Group Cares of Loveland, Colorado, a 501c charitable foundation that holds camps each summer all over the United States. They have held home repair mission projects in 2005, 2007, 2009, and 2011. This summer they will be renovating hearts and homes working in Keansburg, Hazlet, Keyport, Cliffwood, Aberdeen, Matawan, Middletown, Union Beach, Atlantic Highlands, Highlands, Red Bank, etc. The youth give their resources and their sweat equity with happy hearts and helping hands.
The Workcamp is a joint effort of local volunteers and youth groups from near and far. We work hard to improve living con-ditions for homeowners who cannot perform the tasks or afford the materials. For more information, please call Bill or Gail at 732.671.1036 today!

Armed Forces to march in the parade. Nominations are now be-ing accepted for the selection of the parade’s Grand Marshall. Candidates need to be veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces and residents of Matawan.
The parade steps off from the St. Clement Church parking lot at 2:00pm and marches along Route 79 to Main Street Matawan ending at Memorial Park where there will be a brief ceremony.

Organizers of the annual seaside FilmOneFest are excited to award three cash prizes (first place $500, second place $300, third place
$200) to filmmakers who create short (under two-minute) films that highlight the triumphs, struggles and rebuilding efforts of the people – and places – affected by Hurricane Sandy for their new Spirit of the Shore category.
For those who live along the shores of New Jersey, New York and Connecticut, the past sev-eral months have been a recovery process from great loss and devastation. At the same time, recurring scenes of courage, resiliency and generosity have been witnessed as individuals
and whole communities rebuild homes, entire towns and lives.
FilmOneFest wants to capture these mo-ments through the camera’s lens and share them with our worldwide audience as a testa-ment to the continuing Spirit of the Shore.
FilmOneFest is a celebration of the short film (all submissions are under 2 minutes in length) that occurs under-the-stars on the shores of Sandy Hook bay, New Jersey. Currently in its fifth year, close to 1,500 attend the event on the third Saturday in July to see nearly 60 films un-spool from more than 40 countries. Combined with live streaming, a growing website, unique ipad and mobile phone apps, a worldwide Film-
OneFest audience of more than 100,000 (in 86 countries) have enjoyed the works of emerging and established talent in the art of film.
This year’s FilmOneFest event will begin at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 20 with a live con-cert and an outdoor path lined by local artisans. Hot food from more than a half-dozen pop-ular restaurants also will be available for the audience. Films screen from 9:00 to 10:30 p.m. Door prizes and a 50/50 raffle are also a part of the fun, with proceeds benefiting the Atlantic Highlands Food Pantry and the Atlantic High-lands Arts Council. FilmOneFest is held at Ma-rina Park (at the end of First Avenue) in Atlantic Highlands.

E-MAIL AND TEXT ALERTS
Aberdeen Township has joined forces with Nixle.com, a provider of mass notification services for public safety agencies, to provide residents and local businesses with e-mail and text alerts.
This new service, which is free of charge to the Township, will operate along with the Code Red system currently in place. Code Red—which provides alerts via telephone, e-mail and text—will remain the only phone notification system in use at this time, while Nixle will provide alerts by e-mail and text only. Nixle will mainly be used for low level notifications, while Code Red will be used primarily for serious emergencies. However, residents can customize Nixle to receive specific types of an-nouncements.
Those wishing to receive alerts via Nixle can sign up by visiting the Aberdeen Township website www.aberdeennj.org or the township’s Facebook page. They can also register by sending a text message with their zip code to 888777. Online registra-tion is also available at www.nixle.com.
“Residents and businesses are strongly advised to sign up for Nixle and Code Red in order to receive all levels of notifications, from routine announcements to emergency notifications,” explains Aberdeen Township Manager Holly Reycraft.

During the monthly Keyport Kiwanis meeting held on March 5 at the Town and Country Inn, members welcomed Christian Aid Ministries Project Coor-dinator Elam Fisher and his wife Lydia. President
Mike Ellithorpe explained that Keyport Kiwanis has been fortunate to receive funds from the Kiwanis Foundation to help families who were victims of Hurricane Sandy. He not-ed the Club so far has been able to give out a total of $4,200 which included tonight’s donation of $2000. Some of this came from the Keyport Kiwanis but a majority of it came from the Foundation.
Mr. Ellithorpe offered some background on Christian Aid Ministries and reported that Mr. Fisher, who works with Di-saster Response Services, coordinates volunteers to help clean out and rebuild for the victims of natural disasters in

the United States. Mr. Fisher worked in the Gulf region after Hurricane Katrina for numerous years and is now coordinat-ing cleanup efforts in the Bayshore area. Mr. Ellithorpe then presented Mr. Fisher with a check for $2,000 made out to Lowe’s from the Kiwanis Foundation to use in his efforts for the families affected by Sandy.

Keyport Kiwanis and Mr. Fisher with a check for $5,000 made out to Kiwanis Foundation, with specifications that it be used for Sandy cleanup. Mr. Corboy said he hopes their donation prompts other clubs in the state to also make donations to the cleanup efforts. Lambertville Kiwanis, which has been in exis-tence for 90 years, raised this money over a period of a year.
Mr. Fisher then spoke about his work here, noting he ar-rived on December 1, 2012 and the volunteers began arriving around the first of this year. “We have a staff of 20 people and we cook our own food and have our own crew leaders. We provide free labor if the homeowner can provide the materi-als,” said Mr. Fisher As of this meeting date, his volunteers had worked on 57 homes, and are currently working on 25 houses at the same time. “We do any type of work from the ground on up to finishing a home. We probably have been able to get 10 families back in their homes which we totally renovated for them.” Mr. Fisher said his volunteers are working in the Port Monmouth, Keansburg and Union Beach areas.
The money received at the meeting will be put into a special Lowe’s account from which Mr. Fisher will draw when there is a homeowner low in funds. Detailed records are kept, and receipts are saved, he added. “Lowe’s has been working very well with us.”
Many of the Amish Mennonites who volunteer come from two hours away in Lancaster and Lebanon counties. Mr. Fish-er said they can house 30 people where they are staying now at St. Catherine’s in North Middletown, though day groups come also. When asked by a member if there was anything the group needed for themselves, Mr. Fisher said, “We are overwhelmed and blessed by how many people donate things here. God Bless you all for sharing.” He said his wife Lydia does the cleaning and clothes washing of those who stay the week, which can be a bit overwhelming when the staff and volun-teers equal about 40 people. The volunteers will remain here until about April 28.
Mr. Ellithorpe presented Mr. Fisher and his wife Lydia with a Certificate of Appreciation for their help with the families in the Bayshore community who have been affected by Hur-ricane Sandy.
