Jeremy’s (Jarrett Cale) dedication to a new game causes concern among his friends and co-workers as it begins to affect his health and gaming social life. As a result, Kyle (Geoff Lapaire) gets tired of filming his brother’s zombie-like state and follows Doug (Joel Gardiner) for an afternoon which sees Doug get in trouble with the law.

Somewhere between Jeremy being institutionalised and Doug’s day in court, a balance amid gaming and real life is found.

Jimmy's Food Factory: What's In My Sandwich?

Wednesday, 3 November 2010

Processed cheese and stay-fresh bread – behind every supermarket product is a process and behind every process is a scientific breakthrough. In this entertaining and thought-provoking program, Jimmy Doherty unpacks the science behind the food items we buy. Working from a makeshift science lab inside a barn, Jimmy carries out experiments to uncover the secrets of food technology.

This episode Jimmy looks at the versatile sandwich. You can put almost anything between those two slices of bread – and they can be eaten for breakfast, lunch or supper, or as a picnic or mid-meal snack. But what goes into that standard square meal?

Why does supermarket bread stay soft longer than home-baked bread? Jimmy attempts to re-create some ‘supermarket bread’, building his own factory mixer from a metal dustbin. He also wonders why processed cheese slices are so popular. Can it simply be because they are so conveniently bread shaped? Why do they melt differently to ‘normal cheese’? And if processed cheese only contains 60% cheese, what are the other ingredients? Using a tin bucket and an electric drill, Jimmy sets up his own processed-cheese production line in his barn to find out.

To complete his investigation into sandwiches, Jimmy travels to Wiltshire to find out how one producer of ready-bagged supermarket salad leaves goes to herculean efforts to ensure that 1.5 million bags a week are bug-free. He also discovers how waste bananas are being used in Hertfordshire to grow tomatoes out of season.

Great Ormond Street

Wednesday, 3 November 2010

Filmed over the course of a year, Great Ormond Street features unprecedented access to doctors from one of the top children's hospitals in the world as they make some of the hardest choices in medicine.

Caught in the Machine follows the work of the UK’s largest children’s Intensive Care Unit. The unit takes children from all over the country and is often the last resort for those who can’t be helped anywhere else.

The film follows intensive care consultants Christine Pierce and Andy Petros as they make life and death decisions over their most difficult cases. Seven-year-old Ellis has been in a coma for five weeks with an unknown illness. Doctors must keep him alive long enough to try and solve the mystery of his condition. Eight-month-old Uzoma has been in hospital since she was born and the team must assess if she’ll ever be well enough to go home. The parents of eight-month-old Deanne have been told the injuries she suffered as a result of her prematurity are so severe that she’s unlikely to survive for long. Her mother doesn’t believe this and has asked the hospital to review her case. Finally there’s the one-day-old baby born without a windpipe. The team must decide whether it’s right to try experimental surgery even though it has little chance of success.

In every case the team is faced with an impossible dilemma. Technology can keep a child alive on a machine almost indefinitely. But when a child is not getting any better, doctors must decide whether it’s right to carry on.

The Children Left Behind

Wednesday, 3 November 2010

Every year over 5000 people in Britain kill themselves. Many of these suicides are parents who leave children behind. Trying to make sense of a parent’s suicide is an intensely personal journey that can last a lifetime.

Tim Clarke inherited a Cotswold estate from his grandmother’s family, but his heart was in the Army and he found it difficult to adapt to life on a farm. In 2004 the strain became too much and he killed himself leaving his wife Jean, and two sons, Sebastian and Freddie behind.

Deanna and Taylor Price’s father took an overdose 10 years ago. They were so young when it happened that the way he died is all they remember about him, making it hard for them to move on.

Carol Pearson divorced her husband, Phil, for infidelity. The trauma became too much and after an angry confrontation he died, changing the lives of Carol and their three sons, David, Alex and Liam forever.

To help families through these desperate times a child bereavement charity holds an annual camp. In 2006 Deanna and Taylor Price attend the camp to face some of the issues that surround the stigma and desolation of suicide.

Phill Jupitus Quadrophobia

Thursday, 4 November 2010

The rapier wit of UK comedy all-rounder, Phill Jupitus is brilliantly showcased in this hugely funny show.

Long regarded as a comedy genius by an audience that has mainly seen him on TV as the longest-serving team captain in Never Mind the Buzzcocks and in numerous other panel shows, Phill Jupitus shows here why he is also a hugely-acclaimed figure on the stand-up comedy circuit.

Phill Jupitus Quadrophobia is the perfect showcase for the brilliant, observational stand-up comedy he has performed to sell-out audiences in venues up and down the UK.

Phill is side-splittingly funny as he treats audiences to the delights of his fantastical flights of fancy – from an electrical store staffed by toddlers on a Saturday morning to his desperate attempts to catch his much feared enemy, the spider, while simultaneously trying to save face with his father-in-law.

Rude Boy Food

Friday, 5 November 2010

Rule-breaking chef-with-attitude, Aaron Craze, celebrates his favourite street food, Caribbean, at a party to kick off his favourite carnival, Notting Hill. His rude boy food includes Big Al’s jerk pork, jerk being his beloved spicy marinade in which it bakes. “Jerk anything is the go” says Aaron, the self-styled ambassador for Caribbean food.

With a constant irreverent patter, he picks the brains of West Indian foodies in his West London beat and cooks up a swathe of aromatic goodies, like polenta plantain chips and fried fish. All have traces of French, African, Portuguese and Asian influences in a melting pot of flavour that his party guests drool over.

And there are no fancy dishes or plates for this fare. It is served on coconut shells, banana leaves and in foil parcels to an appreciative hungry crowd.

Breaking Bad: Over

Friday, 5 November 2010

Now that Walt (Bryan Cranston) has been given some hope by his oncologist, Skyler (Anna Gunn) aims to get him to rest up before going back to work as she plans a party to celebrate the good news. While surprising Jesse (Aaron Paul) with word that he’s still alive and then collecting his share of the proceeds from the sale of the meth they cooked during a marathon session that nearly killed them both, Walt makes it clear that he’s retiring from the drug trade once their current supply is sold.

But at the party to celebrate his progress, Walt is upset by how much Walt Jr. (RJ Mitte) looks to Hank (Dean Norris) for approval – and he ends up showing a very different side of himself. After getting his son drunk on tequila, Walt embarrasses himself and his family when he angrily rebuffs Hank. Meanwhile, although Jesse thinks there is something developing between him and Jane (Krysten Ritter), he’s troubled by her cool attitude toward him when her father drops by unannounced.

Though Walt does his best to atone for his behaviour, Skyler is in no mood to hear about it and hunkers down at work. Determined to prove his worth, especially now that he has some money from the drug sales, Walt spares no expense to replace the family’s aging water heater. And after apologising to Walt Jr., he becomes obsessed with home improvement as he sets out to replace some rotting floorboards. Meanwhile, when Skyler realises that the good news about Walt’s health hasn’t made her feel any better about their marriage, she seeks comfort from her boss, Ted Beneke (Christopher Cousins).

Republic Of Doyle

Saturday, 6 November 2010

Meet Jake Doyle – a rogue, a charmer, a drinker, a brawler, emotionally immature and unavailable… but that doesn’t stop the ladies from flocking to him.

Jake is a new breed of private investigator, cracking cases – and the occasional head – in the colourful and unique port city setting of St John’s, Newfoundland, the oldest city in North America. Jake’s charming little hometown is changing in a big way as it’s quickly transforming from a small seaport to a booming oil town – and where there’s cash, there’s trash… and lots of it.

Republic of Doyle combines the retro cool vibe of classic investigative shows with the dramatic/comedic edge of contemporary television fare, producing a blend of intriguing episodic mysteries woven with the always evolving (and sometimes regressing) relationship turmoil and dynamics of the Doyle clan. This one-hour comedic drama takes a peek into the lives of a not-so-everyday family with problems trying to make it all work as they run a very uncommon family business – a gumshoe racket in St. John’s, Newfoundland – out of a very full house.

In the series opener, father and son private investigators Jake (Allan Hawco) and Malachy Doyle (Sean McGinley) are hired by old family friend Dr Natche to help his son and Jake’s childhood buddy, Benny (Shaun Majumder). Benny, a popular club DJ, has been charged with manslaughter in the beating death of his party-boat boss and the Doyles are hired to uncover the truth. And despite Benny’s silence and refusal to cooperate, the Doyle detectives follow a trail of drugs and secrets to find the real killer - and also find out the reason why Benny was willing to take the fall.

The Fallen Vampire: Bela Lugosi

The Fallen Vampire: Bela Lugosi tells the story of one of the legendary actors of 1930s Hollywood, Bela Lugosi, who created the unique character of Dracula on screen. The film follows the story of his life, from his birth in a small town in Transylvania, close to the turn of the century, to his days as an actor playing Jesus at the Hungarian National Theatre in Budapest. It recounts his time as a communist who had to flee Hungary, and his subsequent persecution - and blacklisting - by the McCarthy witch hunts for his political views.

Bela Lugosi created a magnetic and sexual Dracula, making him one of the biggest sex symbols of the time, a role that he played off screen as well as on. Towards the end of his life, Lugosi became typecast and the miracle of Dracula turned into a curse, as he was unable to get away from the character that had made him famous.

He was the first actor in Hollywood to ever make public his drug addiction, and he committed himself to an institution for his addiction to methadone. When he died penniless in 1956, his audience had already forgotten him, but over 50 years later Bela Lugosi is regarded as the most genuine Dracula on screen and by many as the father of horror.

Teachers

Kurt (Navin Chowdhry), Brian (Adrian Bower), Penny (Tamzin Malleson), Matt (James Lance) and Lindsay (Vicky Hall) are the teachers no parent would want teaching their kids.

Follow the hilarious comedy when it repeats on ABC2 at 10:30pm on Tuesday nights. We see the teachers making – and breaking - friends, trying to figure out the opposite sex, fighting in the playground, and dealing with loud-mouthed pupils.

Set in fictional Summerdown School, it’s business as usual for the young teachers who specialise in immaturity rather than more traditional subjects.

WUSA

Rheinhardt (Paul Newman) arrives in New Orleans and tries to cash in on an old hundred dollar loan. Instead, Farley the sailor tells him about a politically reactionary radio station which is looking for a pitch artist and newscaster to sell their New Patriotism gimmick.

Outside a crowded bar near the riverfront, Rheinhardt meets Geraldine (Joanne Woodward) who is trying to cadge dinner from a drunken sailor. After a kind word from Rheinhardt, Geraldine agrees to let him buy her a steak and she offers to share her room with him.

The next day Rheinhardt shows up at the radio station WUSA and is hired by Bingamon (Pat Hingle), the owner, with the understanding that he will play ball with the station. Rheinhardt also meets politicians Calvin Minter (Wayne Rogers) and Jimmy Snipe (Skip Young), who okays him as pivot man for a hate rally to be sponsored by WUSA which will lean heavily on welfare chiselling.

The stadium at which the rally is staged takes on all aspects of a circus bigtop. Crowds are filling the stands and outside black militants mingle with other curious African Americans. Inside, Geraldine sits alone in the stands. Chaos ensures and not everyone survives.
