Lizard Kings

Sunday, 18 July 2010

They look like dragons. Armed with sharp teeth, tearing claws and a whip-like tail, these fearsome creatures are not only powerful, they’re also smart. Top predators with intelligence, that learn as they hunt, and that use their brain to track down prey, no matter what.

Sounds like these cunning hunters should be a big-brained mammal, but these creatures are reptiles, members of a family that evolved when the dinosaurs roamed the earth. They are the largest lizards still walking the planet, the monitor lizards – the Lizard Kings.

Ranging in size from the 3-metre long Komodo Dragon to the 20-cm short Pygmy Monitor, this huge scale range within a single genus – roughly the difference in body mass between an elephant and a mouse – is unmatched by any other group of terrestrial animals.

Australia is the ‘Land of the Lizards’. Half of all known monitor species live here. Yet finding them is no easy task. Natural loners, and always on guard, they sense anything or anybody from hundreds of metres away. It takes an expert hunter to track them down.

Enter the ‘Lizard Man’, renowned US biologist Professor Eric Pianka, the undisputed world authority on lizard ecology. Tall, silver-bearded and sharp-witted, this self-proclaimed ‘true desert rat’ has spent decades tracking these elusive creatures. And this is the first time that Eric and his research have been filmed for television.

This charismatic and passionate scientist takes us into Australia’s red heartland, to his favourite ‘lizarding ground’ in Western Australia’s uninhabited Great Victoria Desert.

Little Dorrit

Sunday, 18 July 2010 FinalMr Dorrit (Tom Courtenay) returns to England with the newlyweds, Fanny (Emma Pierson) and Sparkler (Sebastian Armesto). He quickly settles into the London highlife, greatly enjoying being the distinguished guest and friend of Mr Merdle (Anton Lesser) who has offered to help him invest his fortune. However, when old faces from the past start popping up here and there, matters take an unexpected turn for the worse.

Mr Dorrit returns to Venice a shadow of his former self, unravelled by the constant reminders in London of his unhappy, shameful past. His one remaining wish is for a future together with Mrs General (Pam Ferris).

Meanwhile, Pancks (Eddie Marsan) discovers the whereabouts of Miss Wade (Maxine Peake) for Arthur, and Arthur wastes no time in heading to her new address to ask her where he might find Rigaud. He’s convinced that Rigaud’s hold over the House of Clennam has something to do with the family’s secret past.

Mr Merdle, although having succeeded in convincing half of London to invest in his lucrative bank, remains strangely hang-dog and depressed. He visits Fanny and Sparkler and asks to borrow a pen-knife, before disappearing again and committing suicide.

Mr Merdle’s death sends shockwaves through London, as it transpires that all along he had been fiddling his books and in reality, he had nothing. The thousands of people who invested in him now face financial ruin. One of those unfortunate people is Arthur, who finds himself in the Marshalsea Prison for Debt.

When Amy (Claire Foy) discovers that Arthur is now an inmate of the Marshalsea, she abandons her own family’s financial crisis and rushes to be by his side. However, Arthur, although he finally realises his love for her, will not allow her to bind herself to him in his ruined circumstances.

Rigaud re-emerges and reveals his full set of cards to Mrs Clennam. But what exactly is it that he knows about the House of Clennam? And when she finds out what he knows, will Mrs Clennam finally give in to his threats?

Talking Heads: Jim Frazier

Monday, 19 July 2010

Talking Heads is profiling one of Sir David Attenborough’s heroes: world-renowned Australian wildlife cinematographer Jim Frazier. Jim has shot for Attenborough’s landmark documentary films including Life on Earth, The Living Planet and Trials of Life.

In the program, Sir David Attenborough praises Jim’s work and the extraordinary lenses Frazier invented.

One of Jim’s lenses revolutionised Hollywood film-making and was used in blockbusters such as Titanic, Jurassic Park and various James Bond movies. It led to Jim being awarded an Emmy and a Technical and Scientific Academy Award. But everything turned sour when Hollywood lawyers nearly bankrupted Jim in a multi-million dollar US court battle over the lens patent. Jim was crushed.

On Talking Heads, Jim Frazier steps out from behind the camera to chat about the highs, lows and secrets of wildlife photography. And he reveals the extraordinary – and sometimes dangerous – lengths he’s gone to in his almost-obsessive pursuit of ‘the shot’.

Jim’s filming career almost never started. As a child he was almost blinded when squirted in the eye with tiger snake venom. Later, as a cinematographer, he had a similar problem with vicious weaver ants that got up his nose and into his eyes.

“That was one of the hardest jobs I’ve ever done in my life,” he tells Peter Thompson. “Constant biting of the ants, so I developed barriers on the lenses so they couldn’t get on the camera because if they did they would get into your eyes - and you would get formic acid squirts in your eyes!”

Talking Heads features highlights from Jim’s 40 years of wildlife photography, and unveils his plans for his most ambitious nature series to date.

Jim has filmed around the world, and nature footage for this episode came from far and wide. Ironically, Mother Nature temporarily delayed the making of Jim’s Talking Heads episode. Some footage was sent by plane from Europe – but its arrival was delayed by the volcanic ash cloud that disrupted air traffic.

Scientist, inventor, naturalist and artist – Jim Frazier is a remarkable unsung Australian success.

Greatest Cities Of The World With Griff Rhys Jones

Tuesday, 20 July 2010 Final

In the final program of this 6-part series Griff visits Hong Kong. A complex city that is a mix of the ancient and modern, East and West, and where consumerism and spiritualism live side by side.

Griff’s curiosity leads him to an exotic fish shop that has opened in the middle of the night to cater for a wealthy businessman’s obsession, to helping out at a bird market and discovering that Britain’s influence continues in the shape of the Boy Scout Movement.

The majority of tourists in Hong Kong are from mainland China and Griff joins a group on their tour bus. He explains that he cannot speak Mandarin Chinese except for a song he learnt in school. Much to their initial bemusement he starts singing; however they soon start to sing along heartily, to Griff’s relief. He explains that the song is The East is Red, an old Maoist anthem from the days of China’s Cultural Revolution, so bit of a risky choice. But he says: “In the end it was like singing some old Beatles song, just a memory from a different era.”

In Hong Kong, schoolchildren are under immense pressure to do well and Griff joins a class of children who are being taught a unique method of mental arithmetic. These children are having fun while learning and are amused by Griff’s attempts to keep up with them. One young pupil tries to explain to Griff how he works out the sums. He tells him: “In your head you see your fingers and then you will have the answer in your heart.”

Griff reflects: “A bad bout of ‘Madonna –itis’ nearly took hold. I had to repress an urge to take him home – he’d fix my tax returns in a second.”

Tonight on the world’s most impossible quiz show, Stephen Fry saucily grills panellists Alan Davies, Rich Hall, Jeremy Hardy and Bill Bailey with quite interesting questions.

All the questions are impossibly unfair and quiz master Fry gives points for interesting answers, regardless of whether they are right or not. In a cruel twist of fate, he takes away points for answers that are not only wrong, but pathetically obvious.

Tonight’s questions are all about alligators, astronomy, Asia and aisles.

Artscape: Hannah Gadsby Goes Domestic

Tuesday, 20 July 2010

Comedian Hannah Gadsby has been called many things, but never domestic. This ‘domestically-challenged’ winner of the Director’s Choice Award at the 2010 Melbourne Comedy Festival steps outside of her comfort zone and into the kitchen to explore the work of contemporary artists who have been inspired by themes of domesticity.

Intrigued by an exhibition at a local gallery called In The Kitchen Sink, Gadsby hunts down some local artists who are asking the big questions about women in relation to the kitchen and home through their artwork.

She takes us to meet some of the art world’s brightest stars who still have something to say about home and hearth and discovers that nothing is sacred in a world where domestic rituals and gender stereotypes come in for a roasting.

Gadsby, who struggles to boil an egg but has a degree in art history, toils about the art scene while sharing some of her fondest domestic memories. A refreshing and humorous look at contemporary art, with a distinctly retro flavour.

Grand Designs Revisited: Walton Huf Haus

Thursday, 22 July 2010

David and Greta Iredale are seasoned builders. They built their first house in 1956 and their second, nine years later. Having lived in it for 40 years, the timber house they designed themselves began to rot, so they decided to demolish it and replace it with a prefab. For their final house, they chose a solid, German built, precision engineered Huf Haus.

Built in a factory in Germany, each part was constructed by a different team of skilled workers, very much like a car production line. The kit house, complete with doors, windows, fixtures and fittings, was then transported from Germany to site in Surrey and put together like a gigantic jigsaw puzzle. And with the schedule tighter than a pair of lederhosen, the Germans promised to put the entire house together in just six days.

True to their promise, the German team arrived at the crack of dawn on the scheduled day but construction was delayed because the British crane driver got lost and arrived five hours late! Working late to make up for lost time, the German team succeeded in erecting the house on time.

Impressed by the Germans’ efficiency, designer David’s next challenge was to personalise the interior.

Four years after they moved into their new house, Kevin McCloud returns to see if David and Greta’s Huf Haus is still as good as the day it was delivered.

The Making Of Modern Australia

Thursday, 22 July 2010 New Series

The first of a four-part series of the ‘people’s history’ of post-war Australia draws on the stories and memories of ordinary Australians to reveal the significant social and cultural shifts here since 1945.

This episode looks at what happened to the Australian child. The post-war urge to procreate saw a population boom in Australia from 7.5 million in 1946 to 11.5 million in 1966. The children born in these decades were known as the Baby Boomers and they brought a rock‘n’roll rebellion that would sweep away pre-war conservatism and change things forever.

Narrated by Williams McInnes, this episode includes evocative film and home movie footage recalling a simpler time when kids roamed in the great outdoors and swore an oath at school to ‘cheerfully obey their parents, teachers and the laws’.

A Scottish orphan recalls years of neglect in the care of the Catholic Sisters of Mercy (with no mercy); a Brisbane couple remembers classrooms with harsh discipline and an Aboriginal girl is taken from her family and ‘assimilated’ into white society.

Today’s kids are digital natives, plugged into a world awash with instant information and entertainment, but has something been lost in the transition?

A Good Man

Thursday, 22 July 2010

Chris Rohrlach, the good man of the title, looks like an ordinary Australian ‘bloke’. A farmer from northern New South Wales, we discover Chris mustering sheep.

But Chris’s is an extraordinary story. Fourteen years ago, his pregnant girlfriend Rachel had a massive stroke which left her incurably quadriplegic, with significant neurological impairment. Chris was undeterred. For him Rachel was still Rachel, and he married her shortly after their baby was born.

That baby is now a teenage boy and Chris and Rachel have just found out they are having another child! If that was not enough responsibility for Chris, life on the farm is tough and he desperately needs a second income. To the horror of many local townspeople, Chris decides to open a small legal brothel.

This is an extraordinary story of love, commitment, the uniquely Australian culture of country people, and a resilience that seems to know no bounds.

Can Chris juggle his duties as husband and father with the demands of a business? Can an ordinary farmer be successful in the sex industry? Can a ‘good’ man also be a good pimp?

Saturday, 24 July 2010

After the death of an 11-year-old boy, DC Grace Dasari (Amita Dhiri) is acting as Family Liaison Officer, and DS Max Carter (Christopher Fox) mounts an investigation into a truck high-jacking operation that might involve the boy’s father Craig Gant (Jai Armstrong).

Exhibiting increasingly erratic behaviour, DS Carter conducts the operation without DI Neil Manson’s (Andrew Lancel) approval - leaving the rest of the team in the firing line when Manson finds out.

With DI Manson distracted by his son’s fight against leukemia, his lack of leadership leaves the team vulnerable to Carter’s heavy handed bullying and they are becoming resentful.

Carter uses threats to make a gang member reveal information about a planned highjack to Crimestoppers, and even though DI Manson suspects Carter is responsible for how they obtained the information, he has no choice but to follow through and allow the truck to be followed.

Meanwhile, DC Dasari feels increasingly uncomfortable about her Family Liaison role in light of the fact that they may be about to catch Gant in the act, and feels the family will think she betrayed them.

The intercept takes place as the truck is about to be high-jacked, but to DS Carter’s extreme frustration, the gang leader gets away.

Gant is left to answer the police’s questions and it’s obvious that he is scared for his life...

Art Nation

Art Nation profiles Australian-born visual artist Stephen Eastaugh who has been travelling the world for more than 25 years and has visited 80 countries. His experiences of this global movement and change, of time and place, have defined the subject choice and mixed media methods in the production of his art, most recently in painted textiles.

Eastaugh claims he is ‘geographically promiscuous’ - a nasty form of travel sickness. Setting up studios in far-flung places like Ulaan Bataar, Ougadougou, Phnom Penh, Nuuk, Ushuaia, Nufa Alofa and Broome seems to be his normal modus operandi.

He has had 50 solo exhibitions in a variety of locations from major world cities like Paris, Hong Kong, Amsterdam, Sydney and Bangkok to a geodesic satellite dome at Davis Station in Antarctica.

Eastaugh’s latest exhibition, An Unstill Life at the Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery, Victoria will display 16 of his works which relate to his many journeys between 2004 and 2008.

And to close the program, indie-pop singer Kate Vigo and the Underground Orchestra perform in the Art Nation studio.

Poh's Kitchen

On her recent trip to Malaysia, Poh noticed that in Malaysia there’s no differentiation between breakfast, lunch and dinner. This got Poh thinking about breakfasts around the world and wanting to find out more about breakfast traditions.

Poh shares an amazing meal with her Indian friend Ragini Dey. Poh relishes the novel experience of eating curried prawns in the morning, Ragini dispels the myth that there’s no bread in India and Poh also discovers that among the exotic flavours at the table lurks a very familiar food: good ol’ toast, a reminder of India’s colonial past.

Poh also gets a breakfast invitation from Moroccan restaurateur Mohamed Bartaouch, who presents an amazing spread of food but insists that Poh cannot eat until he’s completed the complex ritual of preparing and pouring mint tea, the most popular drink in Morocco. With the tea finally poured Poh tucks into delicious Moroccan delights including almond biscuits, a breakfast tagine and her favourite, flatbread with amlou - an incredible dip featuring the rare and precious argan oil from Morocco.

Back in her kitchen Poh has invited Emmanuel Mollois to demonstrate the French breakfast tradition of dipping bread into hot chocolate. So what do you cook a Frenchman who’s visiting for breakfast? Crepes of course! And just to make sure no-one starts the day hungry, Poh throws in a soft boiled egg with parmesan soldiers for good measure. Surprisingly, Emmanuel has only recently taken up the art of baking bread but he really enjoys it and shows Poh how to make the delicious bread Baguette Viennoise.

After a great ‘naughty’ meal Poh comes to the conclusion that the best thing about breakfast is that you have the rest of the day to work off those kilojoules!

Catalyst

Skating on the Edge

Most young men go through it - a time of feeling immortal - when the thrill of an adrenaline rush leads to reckless behaviour. But, why would such behaviour evolve, when it’s potentially harmful – even lethal? Jonica Newby joins some thrill-seeking scientists on a mission to find out – and their research weapon of choice is a beautiful young scientist - bound to bring out the best (or worst) in any male.

Science Yacht

Ships, planes, helicopters and snow tractors can take scientists to most parts of Antarctica’s harsh environment, but not all. One man, however, is designing a new kind of craft that will allow researchers to visit some of the most inhospitable places down there. He’s the captain of Australia’s icebreaker, the Aurora Australis, and Mark Horstman caught up with him earlier this year during a one-month voyage through the Southern Ocean. His yacht will enable scientists to continue to conduct their research while it is frozen into the ice for the winter.

Eureka Prizes People’s Choice Award

Each year, the Australian Museum presents its Eureka Prizes to honour achievement in Australian science. One of the popular awards is the People’s Choice award in which the public can vote for scientists chosen by the Museum. Six of the nominated finalists are profiled in this episode of Catalyst.

Angry Frogs

For the red-eyed tree frog, holding onto its territory is an important aspect of successful mating. If there’s one thing that makes it angry, it’s an interloper. And giving the tree a good shake is its way of making a stand.
