ABC Technologies, Inc. THE CASE OF SHATTERED DREAMS LOCATION OF CRIME : Brock’s Glass Boutique, 990 Broken Way, Los Angeles. Glass art store and residence/home of Darin Brock (he lives upstairs). DESCRIPTION OF CRIME : Three, large, original glass sculptures were destroyed by gunfire sometime in the middle of the night. The glass sculptures were displayed in the front windows of Brock’s Glass Boutique – a store selling original, hand-made, glass artwork. Three bullets were fired through the front windows of the store hitting the fragile, glass sculptures – breaking each into hundreds of pieces and destroying them. The sculptures were priced for sale at $1.5 million dollars each. It appears as though the expensive, glass sculptures were the targets of the attack. The bullets were apparently fired from a group of buildings located to the North of Brock’s Glass Boutique. EVIDENCE FOUND AT THE CRIME SCENE : Very little evidence was found in Brock’s Glass Boutique. Three bullets entered the shop. Each bullet first passed through a front window (leaving a bullet hole behind), next passed through a glass sculpture (destroying the sculpture), and finally hit the floor (leaving a second bullet hole behind). The bullets were recovered from the holes in the floor, but were too damaged to be used as evidence. Mr. Brock reported that his residence above the Boutique was not damaged in any way. INTERVIEWS - Darin Brock, owner of Brock’s Glass Boutique, says that due to a lack of sales and financial difficulties, he had to recently lay off one of his long-time employees – John Edelman. Darin claims that John was very angry and upset, and before leaving John screamed “I will get even – you can count on it!”. Darin thinks this shooting is the work of John Edelman getting even. Darin’s last statement was “I have always dreamed of selling my magnificent glass sculptures and becoming rich and famous. Now all my dreams appear to be shattered.” 146

I just received a call from the Los Angeles, California Crime Lab and they need our assistance for what appears to be a routine crime. Read the details of the crime (found below) on our flight out to Los Angeles and be prepared to start working on the case immediately upon arrival. IMPORTANT INFORMATION AND RULES – PLEASE READ!!

THE CASE OF SHATTERED DREAMS

LOCATION OF CRIME: Brock’s Glass Boutique, 990 Broken Way, Los Angeles. Glass art store and residence/home of Darin Brock (he lives upstairs).

DESCRIPTION OF CRIME: Three, large, original glass sculptures were destroyed by gunfire sometime in the middle of the night.

EVIDENCE FOUND AT THE CRIME SCENE: Very little evidence was found in Brock’s Glass Boutique.

Now all my dreams appear to be shattered.”

1. Detailed sketches (TOP VIEW, SIDE VIEW, AND FRONT VIEW) of the crime scene and surrounding buildings have been provided by the Los Angeles Crime Lab. 2. The bullets were fired from the buildings to the North of Brock’s Glass Boutique. Shots could have been fired from any WINDOW or the front edge of any building’s ROOF. 3. Analyze the bullet hole evidence to see if you can determine the location of the shooter. 4. Once a shooter’s location is discovered you should search that area. You might uncover important evidence that can help you solve the crime. 5. You will be given EIGHT Search Warrants that will allow you to search any rooms, roofs, or residences/homes for additional evidence that might help you solve this case. Each Search Warrant can be used only once – to search one room, roof, or residence/home. You DO NOT need to cut out the individual Search Warrants. 6. You can search any of the rooms or roofs of any building for additional evidence. Simply fill out one of your Search Warrants with the correct information – the building and room number (or roof) you would like to search - and give it to your supervisor. 7. You can search for additional evidence in the residence/home of any person you believe is involved in this crime. Simply fill out one of your Search Warrants with the correct information – the name and address of the person’s residence/home you would like to search – and give it to your supervisor. 8. The local Ballistics Lab is available for your use. You can test fire any weapons as needed. Simply show your supervisor the weapon you would like to test fire. When your team has completed analyzing the crime scene you will: 1. Turn your remaining Search Warrants in to your supervisor and pick up a Police Report Form. Neatly fill out the entire Police Report Form – answer all questions. 2. Turn in to your supervisor:

Your neatly completed Police Report Form

Neat copies of the TOP VIEW, SIDE VIEW, and FRONT VIEW sketches showing bullet hole locations, correct bullet trajectories, and the correct location and identification of any shooter

Your pay for this job will be based on the completeness and accuracy of your work. I will be completing an Evaluation Form to determine your final pay.

The shooter must have fired from either location “A” or “B” – but which is correct?

B

building

building A

TOP VIEW

Calculate the shooter’s heights for location “A” and location “B”. Check heights on the FRONT VIEW sketch to see if either of the locations can be eliminated.

FRONT VIEW

Calculated shooter’s height is too high for location “A” to be correct.

Shooter must have been at location “B”. Calculated height is at window.

Cierra,

Everything worked just as planned. It was sad to see my beautiful glass sculptures destroyed – but thinking of the money we will soon have makes it all worthwhile. I already have our tickets to South America. I can’t wait to start our new life together!
