Mind mapAsk students to think of words they associate with the word bionics. Record students’ ideas on a mind map with the word BIONICS in the middle. Below are some suggested words related to bionics.

Bionic 3D printing Science Electronics Coding Human body Invention Body part Robotic Technology Research Engineer Design

Ask students to clarify their understanding of the key words by writing down what they think the word means. Swap definitions with a partner and ask them to add to or change the definition. Check them using a dictionary or other source.

Bionics Research

Define: What do I want to know?

Key questions to researchStudents can choose one or more of the following questions or come up with their own:

What are bionic body parts? Why do some people need bionic body parts? What type of bionic body parts have been invented and are already being used by people in

the community? What other bionic body parts are currently being developed? Why are some people concerned about the idea of bionic body parts? What do you think is the future of bionic body parts?

Locate: Where do I find the information? What resources will help answer my questions? (Internet, people, resource centre, organisations, print). Discuss with students what a reliable source is.

Select: What information is important for the investigation? Students may need support to sort through and select relevant information.

Organise: How do I make sense of the information? Students can organise their research by creating main headings from their questions. Write each heading on a separate piece of paper. Record the information found for each question.

Present: How do we let others know about this information? Each group needs to discuss then decide on the best way to present the information. Possibilities could include:

A `Did You Know’ Facts sheet Infographic Oral presentation Prezi presentation Create an infographic using Canva

Evaluate: What have we learnt? Each group reflects on what they have learnt about bionics during their investigation. Students will reflect on their learning and respond to the following.

What I learned... What I found surprising...
