In 1962, the Queen sent 200 telegramsto people celebrating their 100th birthday,

by 2007, this had risen to over 8,400

Founded in 1956 by Major Richard Carr-Gomm, the Abbeyfield Society has grown

from a single house in Bermondsey, South London, to providing services and facilities

to over 7000 residents in 700 houses and 80 care homes in the UK. Its guiding

principles are as relevant today as they were then; to provide companionship, care

and practical support to older people within the comfort of their own community.

Residents enjoy an assisted independent lifestyle without the worries of running a

household or being left alone.

The aspirations and expectations of today’s older people and those of future

generations are changing, with a bigger focus on quality of life. This includes

providing home-from-home environments; supporting purposeful daily lives with

strong community links; offering personalised support and care where appropriate;

facilitating important relationships and respecting personal control and autonomy.

Abbeyfield has always strived to offer a good life to older people and at Abbeyfield

Locks Heath, they are aiming to offer one which incorporates mind, body and soul

but which also recognises the reality of many older people’s lives.

Abbeyfield is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to making the lives

of older people easier and more fulfilling.

Our mission is simple: to enhance the quality of life for older people and

we do that through our core principles of not-for-profit, volunteers

and aspirational accommodation where residents don't have to compromise.

Each apartment has been carefully designed to offer a realhome-from-home for our residents with the use of qualitymaterials and finishes. A secure entry system including videocamera ensures resident’s safety and security. Lounges havedual aspect windows with double-glazed patio doors openingonto either a Juliet balcony or a patio area and offer plenty of light and space. Kitchens are comprehensively fitted with a range of matching units, stainless steel single drainer sinkunit, electric cooker and stainless steel cooker hood withplumbing for a dishwasher and space for an under-counterfridge. The master bedroom has double built-in wardrobesand with all rooms offering double-glazing, it couldn’t becosier and more cost-effective.

Abbeyfield are offering people of 55+ the chance to buy an apartment in a community for older people with addedservices and facilities. Shared ownership provides anaffordable alternative to buying on the open market and is facilitated by the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA).

How does it work?

You purchase a share in a new apartment and pay asubsidised rent on the share you don’t own. Typically, thepart you do own can be funded by a mortgage or yoursavings. Over time, you can buy greater shares up to andincluding 75% of the property, which is a process called‘staircasing’. Shared Ownership is sometimes referred to as New Build HomeBuy or part-buy, part-rent.

The Villageof Locks HeathLocks Heath is a western residentialsuburb of Fareham, in the south ofHampshire. It lies to the east of Sarisburyand Warsash, to the west of Titchfield andto the south of Park Gate and Swanwick.

In years gone by the most important localactivity in this area was the growing ofstrawberries. The industry was developedlargely as a result of the Enclosure Acts inthe 19th Century under which the formercommon land was split into many plots.The new plot owners needed a crop thatwould give them a fast income from asmall outlay and the strawberry was ideal.The industry developed quickly and fromSwanwick station, opened in 1888, trainloads of strawberries were soon being sentto all parts of the country.

Schoolchildren helped with the pickingand whole families of gypsies flooded in to supplement the local labour to harvestthe crop. After the First World War theindustry began to decline as growersturned to other crops and many of thestrawberry fields were lost to building. Theindustry, though now in a muchdiminished form, still survives, but onereminder of its great days is a local pub,the 'Sir Joseph Paxton'. This is named notjust after the designer of the CrystalPalace, but after one of the finest localvarieties of strawberry.

The nearby Locks Heath shopping centreis served a by a variety of good local shopsincluding a doctor, dentist, post office,banks, building societies and pubs. Thecommunity offers a variety of restaurantsand eateries, including one of the bestChinese restaurants in the south east. Withclose proximity to the coast, the ferryterminal to the Isle of White and railconnections, Locks Heath is well placed foreasy access to motorways and other travelroutes. Locks Heath’s on-site team consists of a small but friendlystaff who are there to oversee the smooth running of thedevelopment, manage the services and facilities, organise

social activities, liaise with residents and sometimes just offer a friendly helping hand.

Volunteers will also complement the Abbeyfield team and will play a key role in establishing links between

residents, Abbeyfield and the local community. As well as offering practical assistance and companionship to

residents, volunteers often get involved in more strategicprojects for Abbeyfield. Abbeyfield welcomes enquiries

from would-be volunteers and the website providesguidance on volunteering with the organisation.
