Proven reliability over the years The VTC is long-established and proven in applications wherespace restrictions call for a compact turbocharger.

VTC high-performance turbochargers are designed for d iese l

engines with rated outputs from 1000 up to 3200 kW per

turbocharger, where restricted space demands a compact

turbocharger.

The aerodynamic design of the rotating components, i. e. theturbine and compressor, of the VTC turbochargers is the

same as for the VTR..4, which is noted for high overall effi-

ciency.

To enable a space-saving design i t was decided to use sepa-

rately lubricated plain bearings between the turbine and

compressor. The resulting reduction in overall length permits

a compact arrangement on the engine and free flow of the

exhaust gases to the turbine.

The plain bearings are lubricated v ia the engine’s lube oi l

system. No postlubrication is needed when the engine

is shut down. However, when the engine is started up, the

turbocharger, like the engine, requires prelubrication.

VTC turbochargers are particularly well suited for use ondiesel engines where compactness is needed, such as

on locomotives, in stationary power plants and on mobile

emergency gensets.

The VTC turbocharger has been designed to enable the rotor

to be dismantled with its bearings as a whole, without the gas

lines having to be disconnected, and to be easily removed

from the gas casing. The same applies to the nozzle ring and

the associated shroud ring. This greatly simplifies mainte-

nance and enables all bearings and running parts to be

inspected without the gas casings having to be dismantled.

Benefits that add upCustomers and end-users can rely on the world’s premier salesand service support network.

Major benefits

Close contact with the diesel engine industry and a wealth of fieldexperience enable ABB to provide expert advice on all questions

connected with turbocharging.

ABB application engineers are highly experienced specia lists who can

be called in to advise on solutions to any problems. Since ABB is a totally

independent company, it can be consulted with confidence at an early

stage.

VTC turbochargers are of extremely robust design, dimensioned to last

the useful life of the engine and undemanding in operation.

High reliability is achieved through a commitment to highest

manufacturing quality and close tolerances. All spare parts can be

used without re-machining.

All V TC turbochargers are provided wi th water connections at the

compressor end, enabling them to be washed with water in service.

As back-up in al l operational questions, ABB has a specia l team of

experienced engineers permanently on call.

ABB’s wor ldwide service network ensures fast, efficient response

around the clock.

The diagram shows the f ield of appl ication of the various sizes

of VTC turbocharger and allows a rough choice of the size of  VTC turbocharger to suit a given diesel engine.

The ranges of appl icat ion of the VTC turbocharger sizes

VTC 254 and 304 are large ly the same as those of the corre-

sponding sizes in the VTR range as the active components

(turbine and compressor) of the two turbochargers are identical.

For a specific application, the definitive size of turbocharger to

be chosen as well as the correct choice of turbine and com-pressor parts (characteristic and size of blades, cross-section

of the stationary vanes, size of compressor impeller and dif-

fuser) is best decided in consultation with one of our applica-

tion engineers.

Design featuresCasing dimensions

The maximum rate of water flow shown for the gas outlet

casing assumes a gas temperature of 600 °C and a cooling

water temperature of 65 °C at the inlet.

To ensure optimum mounting of the turbocharger on the

engine, the air and gas casings are vertically split and can

be turned relative to one another. The fixing feet attached

to the gas outlet casing can also be turned to the desired

mounting position.

Design variants

Gas inlet 1 or 2 gas inlets radial; 1, 2 or 4 gas inlets axial

Air outlet 1 or 2 air outlets

Air inlet Air suction branch axial or radial , or filter-silencer. By using

a filter designed as a surrounding jacket, the larger dirt

particles will be extracted from the incoming air. Noise is

absorbed by felted segments which provide support for

the whole. These silencers achieve high noise reduction for

only a low pressure drop.
