Even our standard solutions are specialIn almost every place where people live andwork you will find at least one transformer. Butas long as it keeps working and supplying powerto the escalator in the department store, thehotel lift, the office computer, the oven in thelocal bakery, the farm machinery or the petro-chemical plant nobody gives it a second thought.

However, transformers are one of the most im-portant units in every production process. With-out them the core activities of nearly every bu-siness and factory would come to a standstill –with serious financial consequences.

After nearly 100 years developing and manu-facturing transformers we are well aware of thisdependency. This is why we never compromi-se on the performance, security or reliability ofour products. Nor on design, materials, manu-facturing methods, environmental protection orrecycling.

Our objective is to support you and to add valueto your activities by offering a comprehensiverange of top quality transformers. We also pro-vide top class service and support.

With this approach we can tailor the most ap-propriate technical solution to every problem. Ahigh quality solution with better service andsupport, better for the environment and yet withgreater availability and a lower total cost ow-nership than our competitors.

All over the world – in underground railways,in amusement parks and every place wherepeople work or live – you will find ABB trans-formers at work.

ABB invites you to find the optimal solution toyour application and to see with your own eyesthat even our standard solutions are special.

Description

ABB Distribution Transformers manufacture awide range of oil and dry type transformers. This brochure describes three phase oil typedistribution transformers up to 2000 kVA and36kV. They are used to step down three-phasehigh voltage to low voltage for power distribu-tion, mainly in urban areas and for industrialapplications. Our standard transformers are de-signed for use in moderate climates and can beinstalled both outdoors and indoors. The loa-ding capability is designed to comply withIEC 354. Distribution transformers can be her-metically sealed (the tank is completely filledwith oil) or equipped with an oil conservator.Tanks are constructed with flexible corrugatedwalls (fins), which enables sufficient cooling ofthe transformer. The corrugated walls also com-pensate for the changes in the oil volume duringoperation. An advantage of the hermetically sea-led transformers is that oil is never in contactwith the atmosphere thus avoiding periodic oilanalysis.

Our transformers are adaptable for pole moun-ting or assembly in substations.

Construction features

ABB technology – CommonTechnology (CT)

Our transformers are manufactured to provideyou with a high quality and reliable transfor-mer. ABB has developed a Common Techno-logy (CT) platform, which defines design stan-dards, equipment and processes used in all ourfactories. Use of this Common Technology en-ables us to guarantee our customers a high qua-lity and consistent product.

The key production features of our small and me-dium distribution common technology are:

oval corestep lapautomatic cutting and stacking of core legswindings directly wound on the core legsor mandrels with 2 HV coils in parallel(smallest units)epoxy diamond dotted paper insulationbetween LV layerstapered or full width layer insulation inHV windings

What we achieved is:

Core

The magnetic circuit is of the three-column typewith mitred joints. It is manufactured with first-rate, grain oriented magnetic, cold-rolled silic-on steel laminations. The mounted core is clam-ped down in order to reduce vibrations and mi-nimize noise levels. Further noise level and noload losses decreasing are achieved by step lapcore construction.

Core design is an important factor of any trans-former’s efficiency. The geometric core arran-gement and the materials chosen determine thelosses and noise levels. Grain oriented trans-former sheet steel is used in the core construc-tion. It is cut by the most modern, fully auto-mated core cutting machinery and assembledinto limb and yoke sets. This results in high di-mensional accuracy, excellent space factor, andlow loss values. By using step-lap technology, the no-load currents can be reduced improvingthe drawbacks associated with reactive powercompensation.

Windings

The windings are made of two components, conductor material and the insulation material. The conductors used are a high grade electro-lytic copper or aluminium. They are insulatedwith pure cellulose or double enamel. The HVwindings are wound either with round, doubleenamel insulated, or rectangular, paper insula-ted wire. The LV windings are wound with rec-tangular paper insulated wire, enameled wireor foil. The windings are designed to meet thecustomer’s insulation level requirements andalso to withstand the short circuit forces as ou-tlined in IEC 60076-5. The neutral points of LVwindings are brought up to the tank cover.

Page 7: ABB Transformers

7ABB

Off-circuit tap changer

The tappings of the HV winding, are connectedto the off-circuit tap changer located horizontallybetween the yoke and the tank cover. The hand-le is located on the cover and should only beoperated when the transformer is de-energized.The design prevents setting the off-circuit tapchanger to intermediate positions. The mecha-nism can also be padlocked during normal trans-former operation.

Insulating liquids

The mineral oil – both inhibited and uninhibi-ted types - with its electrical and chemical cha-racteristics is in compliance with the IEC Stan-dards and is P.C.B. and P.C.T. free.

ABB provides and promotes its own solutionas well. BIOTEMP® is biodegradable, vegeta-ble-oil-based dielectric insulating fluid used inelectrical transformers. The product reduces en-vironmental threats posed by transformer insu-lating oil spills.

On special requests other fluids are available.

...manufactured, assembled, tested and painted in the factoryTank and cover

Tank walls are made of corrugated cooling sur-faces. The bottom plate, side and frames are ofwelded construction. The welds are tested for oiltightness. All protection device flanges, bus-hings, tap switch drive and lifting lugs are fittedon the tank cover. The cover is bolted to thetank frame.

The underbase channel is welded to the baseplate and the rollers are suitable for either lon-gitudinal or transverse movements. Single pole3-phase transformers are delivered with flat baseas standard, but optionally can be equippedwith underbase channel beams where bi-direc-tional wheels are a requirement.

The complete tank is tested and approved ac-cording to CENELEC HD 428.6 S1 standard. Spe-cial type lifecycle tests of more than 10 000 cy-cles simulating over 30 years operation werecarried out with positive results.

Painting and surface treatment

All metal parts are carefully sand-blasted. Theinitial protective coating is made up of a singlecoat of one pack epoxy paint. The final paintcoating is made up of several coats of paint.Alternatively, hot dip galvanized transformerscan be supplied for use in heavy corrosion areas. All units are painted in RAL 7033 but othercolours are available on request. Detailed pain-ting procedures for different environmental con-ditions are also available.
