Gditoriaf THIS IS the first University Revue lhat has been presented by Newcastle University College. Since its inception in 1951, the College, through the determined efforts of its student body, has introduced and developed those activities which so soon became a traditional part of University life.

Notable amongst these are the student newspaper, "Opus", which was first published in 1954, the annual day of "celebration", Autonomy Day, 1July lst, on which day students hit town, generally with a procession- so far we've attacked the Transport Department (1956) and the rock'n'roll craze (1957) . These celebrations culminate in the Cabaret on the same evening.

Now Revue is joining this list of "traditions". The aim of a University Revue is to rend(er) limb from limb politicians and professors, fascists and physicists, liberals and communists- in fact any one and anything that has of late been before. the public eye .and is worthy or unworthy enough to deserve satirizing. Revue a lso presents a number of items which rely solely on the talent of the actor or singer for their success. For these acts, we need talent and have been lucky enough to find in our undergraduate ranks singers and dancers of note.

We of Newcastle University College hope that you will enjoy our Revue and join in the spirit of the evening- one of gay banter and light-hearted fun. If you see someone vaguely resembling yourself on stage, be flattered; if you don 't, feel relieved. If you don't understand some of our more subtle jokes, don't worry about it-it'll hit you in s:xbout a fortnight's time.

7. SCENE PARISIENNE" ...... ............ arranged by Hilary Charker Guy: Jon Hartigan. Moll: Hilary Charker. AND FEATURING "Les Belles d e Tighe's Hill'_'"

J. "TOOTS" SAMS: The most interesting thing about Geoff is his left foot. It is his source of inspiration; it is his foot which has beat so long and so well during rehearsals that we have to thank for the high standard attained by the band.

SANDY CLARKE: Although no longer a student, Sandy (referred to in polite circles as Sandra) refused to take the hin t and came back into Uni. life this year with a bang. She made the fatal mistake of expressing openly an interest in Revue, as a result of which she has handled Publicity and has edited this noble Proqramme.

BOB. COLE: As this picture shows, Bob is an Engineer (in other words, a Technical Delinquent). His is the fierce mien which struck terror into the hearts of the stage-hands, assuring his success as a Stage-Manager.

NOLA B. THOMAS: The clothes that we a ll wear (on stage) are a testimony to the benevolence of NUCSA and the untiring energy , of Nola. Like Li'l Archy, she wants all the credit-and none of the money-to go to Mother.

Page 5: Abandon Hope' Sponsored by Newcastle University College … · 2015. 8. 13. · TESTIMONIAL: They dyed the Gauze for the B ack-drops for REVUE 1 '' I Newcastle Teachers' College

ROBYN SMITH: Hours spent ~t the College designing and painting 'Back-drops and coping with the whims of Co-Directors have not robbed Robyn of her bright smile. No doubt she considers the experience (theatrical of course) gained over the last few months invaluable to her career as an artist.

HILARY CHARKER: Hilary has had the unenviable job of transforming a number of enthusiastic, but strictly amateur, female undergraduates into a chorus-line worthy of Revue . She may not have a friend left amongst the chorus-girls but her success is unquestionable. However, her greatest claim to success is the fact that she taught Jon Hartigan to dance.

PETER ALLEN: Peter doesn't usually smile. Time spent as President and Secretary of NUCSA have made his life one with few moments for laughter. In fact, his role as business manager gives him little cause for rejoicing eitherl He must be thinking of the ducets soon to pour into the NUCSA funds from Revue-Hard luck, Pete!
