    What does AB 12 do for (you)th?

    Extends foster care for youth who are eligible

    y 18 year olds who are in foster care as of 1.1.2012 can

    remain in foster care and are entitled to benefits upuntil they turn 19

    y

    Up to age 20 starting 1.1.2013

    y With approval, up to age 21 starting 1.1.2014

    y Extending foster care gives youth who want it extrasupport

    y Promotes an increase in life-long relationships forfoster youth

    y Enables youth to maintain a safety net of supportwhile living independently

    y Youth will be better prepared for a successfultransition into adulthood

    What do (you)th need to do to stay eligible for AB12?

    y Completing high school or equivalent program

    y Enrolling in college, community college or vocationaleducation program

    y Employed at least 80 hours a month

    y Participating in a program or activity designed toremove barriers to employment

    y Unable to do one of the above requirements becauseof a medical condition

    Youth must meet at least one of the aboverequirements stay eligible for AB12

    y Meet with a social worker or probationofficer monthly

    *These decisions will be made collaboratively with the youth and theirsocial worker or probation officer

    y Supervised Independent Living Setting

    Such as:

    Do (you)th have to participate in AB12?

    y Remaining in foster care after age 18 isvoluntary. Foster youth can decide to leaveat age 18, or any time after turning 18.

    yA foster youth who decides to leave candecide to re-enter foster care at any timeprior to turning 20 (or 21 if the age limit isextended)
