Site Plan

Date of Project: June 2013/Senior Year

Group Collaborators: Robert Lang,

Marceico Gurerro, Silvia Ivanova

What was the Problem: Design a Visitor

Center for the Department of Homeland Security’s

new campus in Washington D.C.

Approach: The Center uses precise perforations

in the building’s skin to create an interactive and

visual timeline in our nation’s war on terror. Measuring

the sun’s position and path during specific events

in our history, the building uses the sun’s rays to

project beams of light that penetrate the skin to

illuminate our past. Rather than a somber and

depressing recitation of tragic events, this gives us

an opportunity to show that while we can never

forget events in our past, the Department of

Homeland Security is creating a safer tomorrow.

Duties:• Collaborated with one other to build Revit

model, and renderings

• Created construction documents of major

building components

• Collaborated with two others to build all

physical models

Axonometric Plan of Structure

After the design development phase of was

completed, the project was taken through

material selection and construction documents

phase. The project had a minimum efficiency

standard of LEED Gold, thus material selection

and building details are crucial to accomplish that

goal. The project specified many different systems

and energy saving strategies such as green roofs,

grey-water collection, and passive heating and

cooling. For example the detail shown on this page

highlights the capillary mat system, which is highly

energy efficient because it heats and cools the

building radiantly through the walls and floors and

not the air.

Perspective of Living Room with Furniture Selection

Date of Project: June 2013

Budget: $60,000

Project Scope: Remodel a 1940 Georgian

home in a contemporary style, while keeping its

vintage spirit, on a tight budget.

Description: Simple modifications to the

floor plan transformed this residence from a series

of cramped rooms into a sleek and open space.

Highlighting the double-height ceilings in the living

room, a new color palette and contemporary

furniture created an inviting and warm environment.

The little-used dining room was updated with a

serene color palette, and we added much needed

storage. The powder room is an homage to the

owner’s love of his favorite jazz clubs: the mirror

and tile work together to create dramatic effect.

Overall, the home now combines the hospitality of

the traditional southern bungalow with a ease and

comfort of a modern, urban lifestyle.

Duties: • Collaborated with one other to design entire

scope of the project

• Created all renderings and descriptive

drawings

• Choose and priced all furniture and

construction in project

Description: Drawing is not just a graphic

medium to show an architect’s ideas, drawing is

a tool to explore through architectural ideas and

layering them together. Every page has several

different drawings on top of each other to explore

layering and depict more information to an

audience. Several different techniques are used

to highlight the urban environment and it takes

into account many different social, economic and

political factors all at once. It is this complexity

that the project sets out to diagram and display.

On a rainy Sunday morning, a man unloads a crate of Red Delicious apples from his truck as eagerly awaiting passers-by watch. This man is just one of a growing number of farmers driving their crop to DC city markets, like this one in the Bloomingdale neighborhood. According to the USDA, farmers’ markets in Washington DC have grown by 14.4 percent in the past year. And it doesn’t look like that number is slowing down with organizations like FreshFarm Markets, http://www.freshfarmmarkets.org, where the man unloading his apples and over 150 other farmers and food providers supply food to 11 different markets spread throughout the city.

Date of Project: Summer 2013

Type of Project: Hypothetical

What was the Problem: To help a client

from the beginning idea of a project to the implication

and branding

How it was Solved: The Urban Cowboy is

a hypothetical project to promote an architectural

design firm that specializes in pop-up stores and

graphic branding. The project took on three phases:

branding and strategy, concept and design,

construction and visualization. The first phase of the

project understood the client’s needs to have a

brand and image that a 18-45 year old audience

would think of as cool and hip; A pop-up store

was determined to the best solution. The design

of the pop-up store builds upon the western

theme with the draped canvas ceiling and brass

and walnut furniture.

Duties: • Lead Designer and Architect

• Created Logos and Conceptual ideas for

branding

• Created the all digital components and

descriptive drawings

Branding Iteration: Final Logo
