On July 11, carolyn Baker, pat Kozik, and i continued our collaboration with the elgin branch working toward applying for a national AAUW community Action grant. the

application will be submitted with the joint efforts of the elgin school district U-46 and our two branches in order to secure

additional technology for latina students in the district schools. the project’s goal is “to provide technology to the under-

served to help level the playing field.” We discussed ways that our branches could work cooperatively to interact with the

student recipients. specifically, we are hoping to measure two goals 1) an “applied” aspect regarding how the technology from

the grant is enabling them to perform with greater excellence in school and 2) a “bridge the gap” aspect, in which the students

explore ways to apply their learning to future career goals. We will be meeting again on August 21st with the school district to

continue this discussion. Christine Brunn

Musings Pat Van Zele August, 2013

According to a pew research center study (5/29/13), in 40 percent of American households working mothers are the sole or primary breadwinners; up from 11% in 1960. this trend is being driven mostly by longterm demographic changes, including higher rates of education and labor force participation dating to the 1960s women’s movement.
