AAU Study Plans Guide

Springing from Al Ain University›s commitment to provide easy and accurate access to registration to its student community, and because of its desire to see that the students take the correct courses and ensure ALL degree and program requirements are met without impediment, pre-requisites have been identified and added to some courses that had none. Efforts have been made to ensure the appropriateness of each pre-requisite added and that all study plans are comprehensive and up-to-date. Below is a brief overview of the different components of a Study plan.

i. The University General Requirements:These describe the core courses all AAU students must take in order to graduate. They are de-signed to provide students with general knowledge that complements and supports the students’ preparation in their major field or specialization. All students following an undergraduate university degree program must complete 33 credit hours of the University General Requirements 24 of which are compulsory and 9 are elective. The elective courses come under the titles ‘Society and Civilization’, ‘Managerial Skills’, and ‘Arts and Culture’. Students are required to choose Only One course from each group according to their desires and interests.

ii. Compulsory College Requirements:These courses are compulsory to all students of all majors. They are designed to provide the stu-dents with solid knowledge and information in each field and provide a foundation on which to specialize. Students must take all the courses offered under this section.

iii. Specialization Courses:These specialization courses differ from one College to another. They have to be studied by all the participants in the program. The specialization courses allow more thorough study in the major field of specialization. Specialization courses are divided into two groups:

(1) Compulsory Courses: Students must take and pass the entirety of the courses offered under this section to be awarded their degree. These courses, also called ‹required courses›, are very specific in nature.(2) Elective Courses: Electives are courses that students can choose from, which, when added to the compulsory (required) courses, enable students to meet their degree requirements. Like Compulsory courses, elective courses are very specific in nature.

iv. Compulsory Supporting Courses:The courses under this section are considered essential as they enhance the major. These are to be taken in other majors within the college and are to be closely related. Compulsory Supporting Courses differ from one college to another.

v. Internship/Capstone Project/Practicum:In their final year, students have the opportunity to connect their theoretical learning with its practical application whether in companies or in schools. In assigned companies, students choose a topic to research. The results are usually gathered in a report and often are presented. The cap-stone project, which is meant to be the final piece of an undergraduate degree, will usually require a great deal of research and effort, and is supervised by faculty members. The practicum enables

student teachers to acquire actual teaching experience through classroom observation and prac-tice teaching.

vi. Free University Electives:Free University Elective Courses amount from 3 to 6 credit hours. According to their degree re-quirements, students choose one or two courses from any other college provided all pre-requisites are met and the free elective contributes towards the degree requirements of the program.

• Professional Diploma in TeachingThe professional diploma in teaching program is a graduate program aiming at equipping teachers with the necessary professional skills they need. In order to obtain the Diploma, students need to successfully complete 24 credit hours. Of these, 18 credit hours comprise the core requirements covering vital subjects in education and learning as well as tackling teaching issues specific to the discipline of teaching i.e. Arabic, English, IT, etc. The other 6 credit hours are dedicated for practi-cum where students put the skills and knowledge they acquire into classroom practice.

• Master of LawThe decision to offer the Master of Law program, in both Private Law and Public Law tracks, came as part of the AAU’s efforts to meet the increasing demand in the job market. The program aims at preparing highly qualified legal professionals. For the purpose of graduating from the program, the student has to successfully complete 33 credit hours divided into compulsory core courses (18 credit hours), elective courses (6 credit hours), and a thesis (9 credit hours). The courses cover the key areas for each track as well as contribute to the students’ skills in light of the requirements of the modern workplace.

• Master of Arts in TESOLThe Master of Arts in TESOL program aims at catering for the needs of the educational sector in the UAE in addition to the region by preparing highly qualified and efficient cadres. In order to graduate, the student has to successfully complete 36 credit hours of which 27 credit hours are compulsory core courses, 3 credit hours elective courses, and 6 credit hours for the TESOL project.

• The Master of Business Administration (MBA):The Master of Business Administration (MBA) program at AAU is designed to produce highly ethical graduates, with advanced communication and critical thinking skills, who have a comprehensive understanding of the field of business administration, management, and accounting. The program covers a wide range of topics relevant to managerial skills and competencies. It requires the suc-cessful completion of 33 credit hours 24 of which are compulsory whereas the remaining 9 are concentration courses. The MBA compulsory courses introduce students to the basics of manage-ment in all fields of business and administration. The concentration courses provide MBA students the opportunity to develop further a specialized area of interest namely; Management, Account-ing, Finance, Marketing, Management Information Systems and Human Resources Management.
