AASHTO LRFD BRIDGE DESIGN GUIDE SPECIFICATIONS FOR GFRP-REINFORCED CONCRETE BRIDGE DECKS AND TRAFFIC RAILINGS, 1ST EDITION

Glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) materials have emerged as an alternative material for producing reinforcing bars for concrete structures. GFRP reinforcing bars offer advantages over steel reinforcement due to their noncorrosive nature and nonconductive behavior. Due to other differences in the physical and mechanical behavior of GFRP materials as opposed to steel, unique guidance on the engineering and construction of concrete bridge decks reinforced with GFRP bars is needed. These guide specifications offer a description of the unique material properties of GFRP composite materials as well as provisions for the design and construction of concrete bridge decks and railings reinforced with GFRP reinforcing bars. 2009. 68 pp.

AASHTO BRIDGE ELEMENT INSPECTION MANUAL,

1ST EDITIONThe Bridge Element Inspection Manual builds on the element level

condition assessment methods developed in the AASHTO Guide for

Commonly Recognized Structural Elements. Improvements have been

made to fully capture the condition of the elements by reconfiguring the

element language to utilize multiple distress paths within the defined

condition states. The multi-path distress language provides the means

to fully incorporate all possible defects within the overall condition

assessment of the element. The overall condition of an element can be

utilized in this aggregate form, or broken down into specific defects

present as desired by the agency for Bridge Management System (BMS)

use. The Bridge Element Inspection Manual provides a comprehensive

set of bridge elements that is designed to be flexible in nature to satisfy the needs of all agencies. The complete

set of elements capture the components necessary for an agency to manage all aspects of the bridge inventory

utilizing the full capability of a BMS. 2011. 172 pp.

BRIDGE AESTHETICS SOURCEBOOK,

1ST EDITION

This sourcebook provides guidelines for improving

the appearance of short- to medium-span bridges.

The public is becoming even more aware of the

appearance of bridges and the effects they have

in their communities. Every structural decision is

an aesthetic decision. If a decision affects the size,

shape, color, or surface texture of a visible part of

the bridge, it affects how people will feel about the

bridge appearing in their community. This document

will cover practical, easy-to-apply ideas for design

engineers to use in developing elegant designs for the

typical bridges on which they work every day. 2010.

ROADWAY DESIGN

A Policy on Geometric Design of Highways and Streets, 6th Edition, 2011, commonly referred

to as “the Green Book,” contains the current design research and practices for highway and street

geometric design. Developed by the Technical Committee on Geometric Design, a technical

committee of the Subcommittee on Design, the document provides guidance to highway engineers

and designers who strive to make unique design solutions that meet the needs of highway users

while maintaining the integrity of the environment. It is also intended as a comprehensive

reference manual to assist in administrative, planning, and educational efforts pertaining to design

formulation. Design guidelines are included for freeways, arterials, collectors, and local roads, in

both urban and rural locations, paralleling the functional classification used in highway planning.

This new edition was written in coordination with the terms and concepts of the new fourth edition

of the AASHTO Roadside Design Guide. 2011. 912 pp.

Web edition features of the “Green Book” include instant online access with nothing to download

or install, single and multi-user license agreements, “life-of-edition” licenses with no annual renewal

fees, and automatic publication updates as they become available. Users can also easily search by

keywords and highlight, print individual pages and sections, add bookmarks and notes that can be

shared with other others, and link to a variety of supplemental information and bonus materials,

including other publications, videos, and webinars.

20116th Edition

Chapter 1: Highway functions, details the flexibility available when designing projects, such as context relative to the scope of the project, community needs and values, and the recognition of economic limitations.

Chapter 2: Design controls and criteria, design vehicles have been added and/or replaced.

Chapter 3: Elements of design, revises stopping sight distances based on grade and wet weather. It also updates passing sight distance for two-lane highways based on NCHRP Report 605. Chapter three also includes object height in the decision sight distance discussion, and modifies the method for the lane drop taper length for passing lane sections.

Chapter 4: Cross-section elements, revises the definition of “traveled way” to match that of the AASHTO Roadside Design Guide, 4th Edition. It also has a new section on rumble strips based on DOT experience and national research, and it includes the latest information on sidewalks and curb ramps, with regard to the impending update of the ADA accessibility guidelines for buildings and facilities.

Chapter 5: Local roads and streets, updates the references to AASHTO LRFD bridge design specification and coordinates the definition of “clear zone” with the new AASHTO Roadside Design Guide. It also adds information about the “level of service” in rural and urban areas.

Chapter 6: Collector roads and streets, details the selection of “level of service” for functional classification and also includes a clarification on roadside design.

Chapter 7: Rural and urban arterials, covers the characteristics of these facilities and how to select the appropriate level of service. It also provides information on the relationship between design speed and lane width and illustrates the benefit of medians to pedestrians in urban areas.

Chapter 8: Freeways, covers the proper super-elevation rates on freeways when considering snow and ice, viaducts, and section consistency.

CHAPTER 11, ERECTING MAILBOXES ON STREETS AND HIGHWAYS, ROADSIDE DESIGN GUIDE, 4TH EDITION

Chapter 11 of the AASHTO Roadside Design Guide deals with privately owned

mailboxes, mailbox supports, and mailbox turnout designs. Highway safety is

the primary reason for a transportation agency to become involved in this type

of design. Limited data exist for vehicle-mailbox collisions because most record

systems do not specifically isolate these types of crashes. However, the Fatality

Analysis Reporting System showed 294 deaths in 2008 in which an impact

with a mailbox was the first harmful event. Although this number includes

crashes in which the mailbox may not have been the direct cause of the fatal

injuries, it is significant because it is associated with an unnecessary hazard.

Because many jurisdictions incorporate this chapter by reference

into their mailbox regulations, the information in this chapter

is frequently of interest to non-engineers and private citizens. Consequently,

AASHTO makes this chapter available for purchase separate from the rest of

the AASHTO Roadside Design Guide at a reduced price. Its content is identical

to that found in the full book.

This book presents a synthesis of current information and operating practices

related to roadside safety and is written in dual units—metric and U.S.

Customary. This edition supersedes the 2006 AASHTO publication, which

included an update of the Median chapter. The guide is intended to be used as a resource

document from which individual highway agencies can develop standards and policies.

It includes a synthesis of current information and operating practices related to roadside.

It focuses on safety treatments that can minimize the likelihood of serious injuries when

a motorist leaves the roadway. This guide was written for use by design engineers and

professionals involved in roadside safety and is considered a significant toll that combines

current research with practical experience. 2011. 354 pp.

Web edition features of the Roadside Design Guide include instant online access with

nothing to download or install, single and multi-user license agreements, “life-of-edition”

GUIDELINES FOR GEOMETRIC DESIGN OF VERY LOW-VOLUME LOCAL ROADS (ADT ≤ 400), 1ST EDITION

These guidelines address the unique design issues highway designers and engineers face when determining appropriate cost-effective geometric design policies for very low-volume local roads. This approach covers both new and existing construction projects. Because geometric design guidance for very low-volume local roads differs from the policies applied to high-volume roads, these guidelines may be used in lieu of A Policy on Geometric Design of Highways and Streets, also known as “The Green Book.” Design values are presented in both metric and U.S. customary units. 2001. 94 pp.

PAVEMENT DESIGNGUIDE FOR THE LOCAL CALIBRATION OF THE MECHANISTIC-EMPIRICAL PAVEMENT DESIGN GUIDE, 1ST EDITION

This guide provides guidance to calibrate the Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide (MEPDG) software to local conditions, policies, and materials. It provides the highway community with a state-of-the-practice tool for the design of

new and rehabilitated pavement structures, based on mechanistic-empirical (M-E) principles. The design procedure calculates pavement responses (stresses, strains, and deflections) and uses those responses to compute incremental damage over time. The procedure empirically relates the cumulative damage to observed pavement distresses. 2010. 208 pp.

GUIDE FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF BICYCLE FACILITIES, 4TH EDITIONThis guide provides information on how to accommodate bicycle travel and operations in most riding environments. It is intended to present sound guidelines that result in facilities that meet the needs of bicyclists and other highway users. Sufficient flexibility is permitted to encourage designs that are sensitive to local context and incorporate the needs of bicyclists, pedestrians and motorists. However, in some sections of this guide, suggested minimum dimensions are provided. These are recommended only where further deviation from desirable values could increase crash frequency or severity. This guide has been updated from the previous guide published in 1999. The fact that new guidance is presented herein does not imply that existing bicycle facilities are inadequate or unsafe, nor does it mandate the initiation of improvement projects. The intent of this document is to provide guidance to designers and planners by referencing a recommended range of design values and describing alternative design approaches. 200 pp.

SEGREGATION–CAUSES AND CURES FOR HOT-MIX ASPHALT, 1ST EDITIONHistorically, segregation has been measured on a subjective basis with state inspectors’ determination based on visual information only. This is difficult because, particularly on surface mix, problems due to segregation may not appear for several months. Visual observation can identify only surface segregation, leaving that below the surface undetected. This report, jointly published by AASHTO and the National Asphalt Pavement Association, addresses segregation and how it can be eliminated to ensure the production of high quality paving mixtures. 1997. 32 pp.

AASHTO DESIGN-BUILD PROCUREMENT GUIDE, 1ST EDITION

This guide is intended to assist state highway agencies in procuring design-build projects, including preparing requests for qualifications (RFQ) and requests for proposals (RFP) and selecting the successful proposer.

This guide is based on best practices from experienced state highway agencies and other public sector agencies. This Guide is intended to be flexible for varying project types, sizes, and procurement requirements. Finally, this Guide promotes a common design-build “vocabulary” for better dissemination of lessons learned and incorporation of continuous improvement. It is important to note that this Guide is not intended to be a “procedures” manual. It supplies an overarching description of the strategies for successful design-build implementation. Each state has its own laws and regulations so this Guide is generically written for broad application, but it also offers specific examples of agency practices to assist with process implementation. 2008. 204 pp.

PE EXAM MATERIALSAASHTO GUIDE FOR CONSULTING CONTRACTING, 1ST EDITION

The use of engineering consultants by state transportation agencies continues to be important in providing the appropriate solutions to transportation needs. This publication replaces the Guide for

Contracting, Selecting, and Managing Consultants in Preconstruction Engineering, published by AASHTO in 1996. In order to assess current practices, questionnaires were developed for both state and consultant practitioners. The responses showed significant growth in the volume of work done by consultants and in the range of services provided by consultants. The results of these surveys, along with the collective experience and expertise of the technical committee membership, were used to restructure much of the guide and to update and expand the discussion of current practices for the effective use of consultants. 2008. 128 pp.

NEWACTION PLAN TO INTEGRATE PLUG-IN ELECTRIC VEHICLES WITH THE U.S. ELECTRICAL GRID, 1ST EDITIONPlug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) offer a rare opportunity to save oil, and thereby address four top policy concerns in the United States today: energy security, air quality, climate change, and economic growth. This Action Plan focuses on the steps necessary to integrate PEVs with the U.S. electrical grid using market-based solutions that foster innovation, minimize public cost, and maintain grid reliability. It recommends coordinated action by the public and private sectors at the state and local levels to harmonize regulatory approaches across the country, balance public and private investments in charging infrastructure, and help consumers understand the benefits and choices offered by PEVs. TRANSPORTATION ASSET MANAGEMENT GUIDE, 1ST EDITION State transportation officials at all levels face the task of managing a wide range of assets to meet public, agency, and legislative expectations. These assets include the physical transportation infrastructure (e.g., guideways, structures, and associated features and appurtenances) as well as other types of assets: e.g., an agency’s human resources, financial capacity, equipment and vehicle fleets, materials stocks, real estate, and corporate data and information. This study therefore interprets transportation asset management as a strategic approach to managing physical transportation infrastructure. Transportation asset management in this context promotes more effective resource allocation and utilization based upon quality information. This guide is a supplement to the 2011 Transportation Asset Management Guide, A Focus on Implementation. 2002. 146 pp.

USER AND NON-USER BENEFIT ANALYSIS FOR HIGHWAYS, 3RD EDITION

This manual provides a valuable resource for people who analyze the benefits and costs of highway projects. These analysts have the difficult and often cumbersome responsibility of performing complex benefit-cost calculations and presenting the results

to decision-makers, the media, and the public. It has been the practice of AASHTO to publish materials to support transportation planners in state, regional, and local governments who evaluate highway investments. This manual is the merger of two, related research efforts that should simplify the efforts of these planners. CD-ROM (single-user) included. 2010. 488 pp.

THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF STATE HIGHWAY AND TRANSPORTATION OFFICIALS (AASHTO) is a nonprofi t,

nonpartisan association that represents member

highway and transportation departments in the

50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto

Rico. It is the only association that represents

all fi ve transportation modes—air, highways,

public transportation, rail, and water. Its primary

goal is to foster development, operation,

and maintenance of an integrated national

transportation system.

Membership to AASHTO is on an agency

basis. Only state departments of transportation

are considered AASHTO Members. Associate

membership is available to sub-state and federal

transportation agencies in the United States,

as well as many transportation agencies in

other countries. Examples of those who qualify

for associate membership are port, toll, and

highway commissions or authorities, foreign

transportation agencies, and city departments

of transportation. Membership is not extended

to individuals or private sector entities,

including engineering fi rms or other private

companies. For more information on AASHTO

Associate membership, including information

on Associate member benefi ts, as well as the

Associate membership application, visit the

This guide provides information on how to accommodate bicycle travel and operations in most riding environments. 200 pp.
