    T i p s f r om aS T A T E T R O O P E RI'd l ike to touch on a couple of driving movements that have

been brought to my attention.Remember when y ou are about to enter onto the interstate

the traffic you are merging into is averaging 70 m.p.h. the speedis equal to driving the distance of a football field every threeseconds.

A s we accelerate on the entry lane, we have to look overour shoulder and use our mirrors, planning when it is safeto enter the highway.

Reali ze you are in entry and acceleration mode going fromaround 25 m.p.h. to 60-70 m.p.h. Usually vehicles wil l moveover to allow you to merge.

W hen there is a cluster of vehi cles, you need to decelerate andallow for a safe merge.

We encourage you to yield the right-of-way. When drivers don'tdo this it sometimes causes accidents. This can lead to injuri es,death or at least a citation for fail ure to yield.

No body wants a citation as they cost money, raise insurancerates and lost time from work . A n attitude disregarding others isnot a safe way to drive..

That is not the safe way to drive.Until next time, State Troopers want you to buckle up

and drive safely to arrive home to your l oved ones.

When starting fromscratch in creating the fishingpond of your dreams, MarleyBeem, Oklahoma State Uni-versity Cooperative Extensionaquaculture specialist, said thefirst step is to become educatedabout pond management.W hat type offish do you wantin your pond? Will they workin the size and type of pondyou have? How do you dealwith pond problems such asmuddiness or excessive plantgrowth?"Information on many pondmanagement topics, includ-ing trophy bass, catfish onlyponds and hybrid bluegill, can be found in 'ManagingPond Fisheries in Oklahoma' ,"Beem said.A limited supply of this pub-lication is available from Okla-homa Department of WildlifeConservation Fisheries Divi-sion in Oklahoma City. Stocked fingerlingsusually become food for largebass already in the pond.Fish for stocking a fishingpond can either be purchasedfrom a private hatchery or beobtained from ODWC withoutcost. An application for freelargemouth bass, bluegill andchannel catfish fingerlingsfrom state hatcheries in By-ron, Durant, Medicine Park orHoldenville must be completedbefore J une to receive fish thisyear. An application can be filledout only once a pond ownermeets ODWC requirementsand accepts certain conditions. The pond owner must have acurrent fishing license, alongwith a pond of at least a half-acre with absolutely no fish,Beem said. Also, game rangers are al-lowed to check anglers forfishing l icenses but ow ners arenot required to let the public fishin their ponds, unless part ofthe pond is on publi c property. For an application or moreinformation on ODWC pondstocking, visit www.wild-lifedepartment.com/farmpond .htm. "I t pays to vi sit the hatch-ery before you buy, to inspectthe fish you'll be buying."W hichever path is chosen tostock a new pond with finger-lings, certain precautions mustbe taken."Observe the fingerlingsclosely and check for any signsof disease," Beem said. "Notall sick fish will show diseasesigns, so it may be safest toreject all of them if some ap-pear sick."Some signs of ailing fishare loss of balance, hangingnear the surface, bulging eyes, swollen or shrunken stomach, sores and cotton-like growth,Beem said."There may be undesirablefish mixed into your finger-lings," Beem warned.
