Personal Design Statement

why DeSign...?i have chosen design to explore my passion and channel my creativity into something bigger than myself. i have found interior design to be a very adaptive and ever changing profession which provides many areas to specialize in.

About Me...i completed bachelor of Design (interiors) and have developed a strong passion for retail, commercial and urban design. i have a very strong and energetic personality which shows in all of my work. i have developed a strong work ethic and will continue to do something until it is finished and done correctly. i believe i am a creative person that gathers inspiration from everything around me.

SkillS... As i have graduated a Design degree i have gathered a large variety of skills including hand rendering techniques, spatial design, materials, finishes and colour theory.i have also developed a variety of digital skills with the use of Adobe Photoshop, inDesign and illustrator. i have also gained skills though the use of computer software such as Auto Cad, goggle Sketch up, layout and Microvellum.

through working in the retail sales industry for over 7 years, i have acquired good communication and sales skills. i am Currently employed as the Retail Designer for Surestyle ltD. where i work on commercial/ retail fit-out projects. Working closely with the client on concept, presentation and construction drawings, as well as quoting and site measures when needed. i am gaining fantastic experience in Retail/ Commercial design as well as cabinet design and detailing. Since working at Surestyle i have expanded my skills on Sketch up, layout and Microvellum. As Surestyle provides a design and build with their own workshop, i also gained an insight into how everything i have designed is built and constructed.

DesIGN sTATeMeNTAs a designer i believe in following my gut instinct and allowing this to guide my process. i strive to push the boundaries of what is understood, as i believe it is critical and innovative thinking that allows for creative solutions.

My Designs follow a phenomenological approach, by exploring sensory experiences through the implementation of touch, smell, sight, sound and taste. the idea of the interior space as an immersive experience allows the engagement of light, surface, materiality and auditory elements to be integrated into a whole designed environment. this approach is further expanded by my interest in human psychology and how spaces can affect people emotionally, physically and mentally.

I enjoy utilising mixed media, digital and hand rendering techniques to communicate my ideas as they help evoke the emotive qualities of a concept. through the evolution of my design process, the connotations or hidden meaning of these materials are what drives my decision; what do they remind you of? how do they make you feel? this is important to me when creating a feeling or theme for a space.

babyco: South Morang

Surestyle’s long standing relationship with the baby Factory provided the opportunity to work thith them on the design of the new babyco store in South Morang just outside Melbourne.

Surestyle worked closely with the team from the baby Factory to provide a design within the brand manual requirements. the team and i provided a space that made the most of the large scale of the building creating different zone with lime green feature bays.

the splash of colour breaks up the white walls and created large scale signage to ensure customers can fine what they are looking for. The large central aisle leads you down past the counter whilst the central feature bay creates a focal point drawing you down the aisle to the rear of the store. the team and i created a subtly playful children’s clothing store.

Avantiplus: Adelaide

Surestyle have been working with Avantiplus on many projects with their newest one being a store in Adelaide. the team at Avantiplus wanted to create a slight twist within their own brand manual. Surestyle interpreted their needs to create a well zoned space split up by subtle curved transitions between contrasting flooring of concrete, carpet and engineered timber. Creating these zones allowed for the large variation of Avanti’s products to be easily merchandised. the Scott feature space ensures that their hero

brand is showcased and becomes one of the main features of the store. large feature walls in the front window entices customers to come inside whiles the scale of the walls create a threshold transition into the open space and large ceiling height of the store. the blue feature pelmets frame the products and with integrated lighting ensure they can be well seen. the variety of plinths creates a playful level change of the display bikes creating interest within the store.

New Balance: Dress-Smart

Surestyles long standing relationship new balance provided a unique opportunity to design the new expansion and fit-out of the New Balance in Onehunga Dress-Smart mall. the Surestyle team and i worked closely with the client to understand the requirements of the project. From “inspiration to installation”, the team and i developed a concept that best utilised the new space. i created complete construction and detail drawings for the new design. the team at Surestyle delivered a full fit-out of the new store complete with bespoke wall

and floor fixtures. The cement look floor and soft grey colour scheme combined with the brick veneer feature panels creates a soft urban environment. the monochromatic grey colour scheme ensures that the products are the main focus in the store. the large category signs guarantee that everything is easy to find for all customers. The illuminated 3D new balance logos add a distinctive design element to the sore while also adding splashes of red and white through the space, which entices customers inside.

new balance met with Surestyle wanting to re-design their reception area, add in more desks, storage and create more privacy for staff. the team and i interpreted their requirements and devolved a design and build concept that provided new modular furniture combined with a new bespoke timber screen and cabinetry. the end result looks

stunning; the dynamic timber screen provides privacy and human scale to the space, whilst also creating a new design feature that provides continuity with the renovated entrance. the modular furniture ensures flexible working environments, whilst the custom joinery delivers a secondary work space and tidy storage cabinets.

Phoenix House Project

the proposal for Phoenix house is to re-invent the ground floor interior space. transforming it into an immersive, contemporary grill restaurant and café, that engages customers and explores the sensory experience of dining.

the concept for the restaurant and café is to showcase the buildings inner glow” by creating an organic and playful interior. this design follows a bio mimic relationship between organic form and growth. the use of repeated glowing segments alters the perception of space; transforming the

geometric interior into an evolving organic form.taking cues from the negative space of the building, these glowing segments project a soft orange light that envelops the space making it feel warm and inviting. This organic form flows through the building progressively becoming more transparent, from restaurant to cafe, showing the gradual transition between the spaces. this creates a new identity, which provides a dynamic conversation between the interior and exterior
