We PreventApne Aap breaks the cycle of inter-generational prostitution by getting kids in red-light districts out of brothels and into schools.

In the past year, we have...

- Established a boarding school for 57 children from high-risk areas and red-light districts in Araria, Bihar.

- Enrolled 9,500 children of women in prostitution in school and provided them with after school homework help.

- Expanded our Night Creches (childcare centers) for children of women in prostitution.

- Taught computer skills, crafts, carpentry and English language to members of our youth groups.

- Started, Computer Centers for our youth groups in Kolkata and Delhi.

- Created classrooms in slums and red-light districts for children who cannot attend school.

We ProtectFor women already trapped in prostitution, Apne Aap offers a way out. Our women’s groups provide support, remedial education and valuable training in job skills. We also educate women about their legal rights and help them stand up to brothel owners, abusive husbands and corrupt law enforcement.

w Trained over 5,000 women survivors of trafficking in small business management, and helped them manufacture products ranging from incense to cloth bags.

w Oversaw the establishment of two soup kitchens by our women’s groups in Kolkata and Mumbai. These canteens provide hot meals to children and the elderly.

w Offered small savings schemes to teach women how to open a bank account and manage money.

w Had three women survivors of trafficking complete literacy classes and sit for secondary school exams.

w Trained women and girls in their legal rights when dealing with police - how to register a complaint, and who to approach about abuse.

w Sent a group of survivors of prostitution to testify for an anti-trafficking bill before Parliament.

In 2007-2008, we...

We follow ProsecutionProstitution would not exist without demand. In addition to empowering women, Apne Aap works with law enforcement agencies and legislators to go after those who buy and profit from trafficked women. By raising awareness about trafficking we shift stigma away from the victims and onto those who expoilt them.

w Continued distributing the Red Light Despatch, a newspaper in Bengali, Hindi and English written by women in prostitution.

w Published Confronting the Demand for Sex-trafficking: A Handbook for Law-enforcement Agencies and two resource books to educate police about human trafficking.

w Trained more than 2,000 police officials in Bihar and Maharashtra to fight trafficking.

w Had our founder and president, Ruchira Gupta, address members of the United Nations Security Council on the implications of human trafficking on peace and security.

w Sent girls from our youth groups to participate in the Eastern Regional Consultations held by the Ministry of Women & Child and UNICEF on child protection issues.

w Received the Abolitionist Award from the House of Lords, UK.

Apne Aap operates out of centers in Mumbai, Kolkata, Delhi and Forbesgunge (Bihar). These ‘Anti-Trafficking Units’ are where we teach classes, hold workshops, provide childcare, serve meals and hold meetings. Not a penny or a minute is wasted. Our centers are busy helping people around the clock!

A typical day at our Center in Delhi:

10:30 am - 1:30 pm: The Center is a creche (daycare) for young children.

1.30 - 2.30 pm: The building converts into a dining hall, where all can get a hot meal.

2.30 - 5.00 pm: The Center is abuzz with activities and classes for Mahila Mandal (Women’s group) and Kishori Mandal (Youth group) members.

5.30 - 7.30 pm: Children get out of school and come to Apne Aap for after-school support classes.

7:30 - 10:30 pm: The lights go out, and the hall is used a night refuge for the children of prostituted women.

Where we work

From rag-picker to

Business OwnerYears ago, Mumtaz Ansari was trapped. During the day, she worked as a rag-picker to feed her children. At night, she came home to an abusive husband in Kolkata’s Topsia slum.

With the help of Apne Aap, Mumtaz has transformed her life. Our Topsia women’s group taught her how to run a business and helped her open a bank account. Now she is president of the canteen run by the women’s group in her neighbourhood.

Most importantly, the support Mumtaz receives from Apne Aap has given her the confidence to stand up to her husband. He no longer beats her and he does his drinking away from their house and their children.

Mumtaz’s canteen is just one of five women’s groups in Topsia. The women of Topsia are working together to attain a better life for themselves and their children.

In the next year, we plan to...

Organize women into legally reorganized self-help groups with their own bank accounts and businesses.

Reach out to the marginalized caste that are particularly vulnerable to trafficking.

Develop art resilience programs to raise children’s self-esteem, increase school enrollment and reduce drop-out rates.

Last December, acclaimed women’s rights activist Gloria Steinem visited Apne Aap’s centers in Kolkata and Bihar.

Women and girls told her about their attempts to organize and escape prostitution. Thirteen-year-old Juhi Nutt, a member of our Bihar youth group, got the chance to interview Ms. Steinem for Apne Aap’s newsletter the Red Light Despatch. “Talking to your mothers and aunts has taught me so much”, Ms. Steinem told her. “The enslavement of certain women... does not stigmatize them but stigmatizes all of us who let it exist.”
