Challenges

• Smart homes and support services for independent living is a market which has an enormous potential and is just appearing now.

• This market is already being explored by big technology players like Apple, Google, Philips. AAL projects to develop should probably look carefully for the niches aiming at specific groups of older adults that have at the same time market potential.

Safe Private Homes for Elderly Persons (CARE)• automated recognition and alarming of critical situations (like

falls) using a stereo visual sensor (which detects only motion) and real-time processing while preserving the privacy

• the technology is used to monitor, analyse, and interpret an elderly's behaviour at home and to automatically send an alarm signal in case of critical situations (e.g. a person falls, or becomes immobilised for a long time, or starts hysteric movements). This sensor technology is integrated in a monitoring system for private homes and nursing homes, including a communication interface and a control station.
