NATlmJAL CONVEfHIONSANFRANCISCOAUGUST 14 200111 ABOUTSANFRANCISCO Thefg-shroudedGoldenGate hidSanFranciscoBayfrom sea explorersfrdecades befre aSpanish overlandexpeditionstumbleduponthevastnaturalharbor, bringingsettlersandchange.NativeHawaiians- called SandwichIslanders- wereamongthe83non-Caucasians who lived in the settlement called YerbaBuena Cove in the 1820sandrenamedSanFranciscoin1847.Theypossibly arrivedinthearea on whaling shipsand became arguably thefrstAsian PacifcIslandersofSanFrancisco. The1848GoldRushturedthesettlementalmost overightintoa19th-centurymetropolis.ManyChinese immigrants who arrived to workin mines and on railroads eventuallyopenedupbusinessestosupportthegrowing population. Theylaidthefundationfor the eventualfrmationoftheoldestChinatowninthecountry.The end oftheGoldRush pulledthewelcome matfromunderthe feetoftheChinese,however,andusheredindecadesof racismandmistreatment,leadingtodiscriminatorylaws. TheAngelIslandImmigrationStationwasbuiltin 1910toenfrcethe1882ChineseExclusionActandsubsequentexclusionlaws.Forthe nextthreedecades, almost 300,000ChineseandJapanese immigrantspassedthrough AngelIsland'sprison-likeatmosphere. Inthereconstructionfllowingthe1906earthquake andfrethatdestroyedmuchofthecity,manyJapanese immigrants,who hadbegun comingto thiscountry in the late1800s,relocatedtoanareathatbecameJapantown. The frst suchcommunityintheU.S., itreachedapeakof activityin1930. Meanwhile,FilipinoAmericanswerealso shapingManila town intheKeary/ JacksonStreetarea. WorldWarIIwroughtmanychangesfrSanFrancisco's Asian PacifcIslanders.Executive Order 9066 wiped out most of theJapanese American community as thefederalgovermentimprisonedresidentsinremoteconcentrationcamps. Afterthewar, theFilipinoAmerican communitygrew quickly,andtodayFilipinoAmericansfrm ourcountry's second-largest Asian American ethnic group. Pacifc Islandersalsofocked to the area. Many Hawaiians movedto the BayArea,asdidSamoanswhowerein theNavyandwho werelaterpostedtovariousCalifriabases.Morethan halfa centurylater, it is e!timated that there are now more PacificIslandersinCalifriathan inHawai'i. JustastheGoldRushbroughtmanyChineseimmigrants,thetechboomofthe1990sbroughtmanySouth AsianstotheBayAreaandthecountryingeneral,and they are nowthe third-largest Asiangroupinthe U.S. The SoutheastAsianandKoreancommunitiesalsoseecontinuedgrowth. Thisisthecityandthelegacywesharewithyouat thisconvention. AlcatrazIsland.TheRockmarksthe30thanniversaryof its19-month occupation bytheIndiansofAll Tribesfrom 1969to1971- thelongestoccupationofafederalfcility byIndianpeople.TheNativeAmericanswantedtohighlight the plight of first Americans and demonstrate the need frIndianself-determination. Asian Art Museum.A collection of more than 12,000 sculptures,paintingsandceramicsfrom40countriesfllthe museumandshowcasethemajorperiodsofAsianart. Cl1inatow11. America's first and largest Chinatown is a complexmixtureofauthenticrestaurantsandshopswiththe requisitetouristtraps.PortsmouthSquareatWashington andKearyStreets istodayflledwith elderlymenplaying checkers, but in the mid-19th century, it was San Francisco's originalcitycenter.
