AAHID SETTING THE STANDARD 2018 2

The single source for certifying healthcare interior designersThe American Academy of Healthcare Interior

Designers (AAHID) is a nonprofit organization

committed to the development and

administration of the CHID Certified Healthcare

Interior Designer® Exam, the only certification

program for healthcare interior designers. It

is not a membership organization, but rather

an organization that board-certifies interior

designers in the U.S. and Canada that specialize

in acute care, ambulatory care, and residential

healthcare facilities design.

To promote the highest standards and values,

AAHID:

• requires ongoing continuing education for

all certificants to enhance their professional

development, and maintain the highest level

of professionalism, integrity and competence

• backs evidence-based research focused

on the impact of the design of the built

environment on outcomes

• values partners who transform the healthcare

environment into one for healing, improving

outcomes, and maximizing efficiency

• supports higher education institutions

through advocacy and support of their

programs and students

Volunteers and partnersVolunteers are important to AAHID’s operation.

Providing strategic thinking and leadership to

drive AAHID initiatives, volunteers serve on the

board of directors, review applicant portfolios,

lead training and education presentations, and

are involved in test development activities.

Industry Partners are companies that believe

in and support AAHID’s mission to qualify and

certify healthcare interior designers.

Our missionThe mission of the American Academy of

Healthcare Interior Designers is the certification

of interior designers qualified by education,

examination, training and experience to provide

interior design services to the healthcare

industry.

Our visionThe vision of the American Academy of

Healthcare Interior Designers is to be the

essential certification program for healthcare

interior designers.

When I earned my CHID, the economy was changing. Some design markets were drying up. Those experienced in commercial were moving to hospitality and healthcare, and not always successful. I got my CHID to set myself apart.

AAHID SETTING THE STANDARD 2018 5

Dear Fellow CHID Certificants, Industry Partners and Colleagues,

As president of the AAHID Board of Directors, it is my privilege to serve

another year along with my fellow Directors, and continue this exciting

journey that our Founders started in 2004. Today, 162 healthcare interior

designers have proudly distinguished themselves by earning the CHID

Certified Healthcare Interior Designer® credential - a credential

that validates commitment to maintaining the highest standards

of professionalism, integrity, and competence. As we usher in

another year, AAHID is poised to see this number grow. Through

the Board’s intensified growth initiative, and your support, we will

continue to strengthen the value of CHID and the certification

program.

2018 was a year we continued to lay the groundwork for

growth. Our marketing campaign was in full swing. Many of our

certificants participated in the “Distinguish Yourself” promotion

and provided testimonials to the value of certification. Sharing

these stories helps potential candidates relate to the success

of others just like them. Spreading the word is key to building

relationships and interest in CHID. It’s also a great way to

promote yourself.

We continued to increase our presence at industry events including

Environments for Aging, Design Connections and the Healthcare Design

Expo and Conference. CHIDs were prominent and actively engaged in

2018. From on-site presence, to leading CHID Exam Prep workshops and

educational sessions, CHIDs energetically advocated for certification.

Our industry partners were just as instrumental in helping AAHID spread

the word.

Thanks to their generosity, networking efforts, and collaborative participation,

CHID Candidate Forums were held at industry partner venues in Charleston,

Dallas, New Orleans, and New York, providing opportunities for interested

prospects to learn about CHID.

2018 was also a year the Board re-evaluated the examination process. We

aggressively sought out options that allowed candidates to effectively

manage their time, while providing more accessibility and convenience

for coordinating the exam around their schedule. To accommodate these

changes, the CHID examination will only be administered in the Fall in 2019.

This is just a sneak peek at some of the highlights from 2018. I encourage you

to read more of the “Year in Review” and be part of the AAHID journey.

We are excited to continue this momentum, and look forward to your

continued support.

will be offered only in the Fall, in 2019.

Applications received by either the January

14, 2019 or July 15, 2019 deadlines, will be

reviewed and processed for the Fall exam.

work at the 2018

Conference. While a

doctoral candidate

in the Architecture +

Health concentration

of the Planning

Design and the

Built Environment program at Clemson

University, Deborah was involved in

research focusing on using real-time

data collection techniques to gain

insight into user responses to high stress

healthcare environments. Deborah’s

doctoral dissertation entitled, “Examining

Child and Parent Anxiety During the

Ambulatory Surgical Process“, studies the

impact of using an induction room vs. the

operating theater for anesthetic induction

on child and parent anxiety for children

who are undergoing an ambulatory

surgical procedure and their parents. Her

study will provide new insight into the

role of design in supporting the child and

parent experience during the ambulatory

surgical process.

The purpose of the American Academy of

Healthcare Interior Designers/Steelcase

Health Graduate Research Fellowship

program is to promote the importance

of interior design research and to

contribute to the body of knowledge

for healthcare interior design, consistent

with the mission of AAHID. It also reflects

Steelcase Health’s mission of research

and evidence-based design to change

the way people experience healthcare

environments. The fellowship is designed

to assist new investigators in initiating

the research aspect of their education by

providing seed money to afford graduate

students the opportunity to pursue new

or novel areas of research.

Industry Events – Networking and Sharing ExpertiseThe healthcare design industry provides

several forums throughout the year for

AAHID to expand its reach, gain visibility,

promote the CHID certification program,

and support our industry partners. In 2018

AAHID made its presence known. CHIDs

were involved in on-site exam workshops,

educational sessions, and networking

events. Here are some of the highlights:

Environments for Aging (EFA)

Savannah, GA – April

The largest conference for senior

living provided a platform to promote

certification. Industry Partners

graciously displayed counter cards that

acknowledged support for the CHID

certification program.

NeoCon

Chicago, IL - June

Many CHIDs and AAHID

Board members were

present at the largest

and most diverse, annual

As a recognized HCD Association partner,

AAHID continues to gain high visibility

at this annual conference. In addition to

a CHID Exam Workshop and exhibit hall

presence, AAHID sponsored an educational

session on “Vinyl, Polyurethane, or Silcone?

What you need to know to specify Durable

Coated Fabrics for Healthcare.” Deborah

Wingler, the 2017-2018 AAHID/Steelcase

Health Student Fellowship Award Winner,

presented her research on “Examining

the Child and Parent Anxiety During the

Ambulatory Surgical Process”, and AAHID

held its Annual Meeting and Reception

which is getting quite a reputation for being

the event for the “Who’s Who in Healthcare

Interior Design.” The Annual Meeting and

Reception was attended by more than 125

colleagues and partners and provided a

platform for sharing accomplishments.

This year, AAHID provided several

opportunities for attendees, CHIDs, and

industry partners to engage and network.

To celebrate the certification program,

CHIDs had an opportunity to feature their

design work at the AAHID Annual Meeting

and Reception. Several CHIDs assisted

board members in the exhibit hall, and

shared their stories about certification

with visitors to the AAHID booth, and

attendees took part in our Passport
