Nesting Incubation and Entrepreneurship for Lever‐aging Agri‐innovations (NIELAN) sponsored by the

Department of Science and Technology (DST), is scheduled take‐off at the ICAR‐Indian Institute of Millets Research, Hyderabad very soon. Prior to this, Dr. HK Mittal, Advisor and Member Secretary, Na‐tional Science & technology Entrepreneur Develop‐ment Board (NSTEDB), New Delhi and Dr. Usha Dixit, Scientist ‐ D, NSTEDB, New Delhi made a visit to IIMR on 30 June, 2017 and discussed on the ongoing pro‐grammes in starting the technology business incuba‐tor. िव एवं लेखा अिधकारी तथा ी चा सर् एक्का, विर ठ प्रशासिनक अिधकारी, भाकअनुसं, हैदराबाद (सद य-सिचव) उपि थत थे । सं थान अनुसंधान सिमित की बैठक भाकअनुसं पिरयोजनाओ ंकी वािषर्क प्रगित पर चचार् हेतु डॉ. िवलास ए टोणिप, िनदेशक, भाकअनुसं की अ यक्षता म 29-30 जनू, 2017 के दौरान सं थान अनुसंधान सिमित की बैठक का आयोजन िकया गया । पिरयोजनाओ ं से संबंिधत प्रधान अ वेषक ने 2016-17 के दौरान हुई वािषर्क प्रगित एवं उपलि धय के बारे म प्र तुतीकरण िदया । प्र तुतीकरण समय प्रबंधन, वािषर्क प्रगित, प्रकाशन शािमल उपलि धय एवं भावी कायर्-योजनाओ ं जसेै मह वपूणर् पहलुओं पर कद्रीत थे । बैठक म उप-पिरयोजना शािमल कुल 36 महा पिरयोजनाओ ंपर प्र तुतीकरण िदए गए एवं उन पर िव तार से चचार् की गई । बैठक के अतं म अ यक्ष महोदय ने गत वषर् संप न पिरयोजना काय की सराहना की एवं संतोष यक्त िकया । डॉ. एच एस तलवार, प्रभारी पीएमई कक्ष ने नई आरपीपी के बारे म सूिचत करते हुए बताया िक नए पिरयोजना प्र ताव आरपीपी िदशा-िनदश के अनुसार ही होने चािहए । डॉ. आई के दास, सद य-सिचव, संअनुस के वारा बैठक का सम वय िकया गया ।

Hyderabad. Dr. Tonapi explained the dignitaries about the research priorities of IIMR and the activi‐ties taken up in the areas of millets crop improve‐ment, value chain and entrepreneurship develop‐ment programmes. The members also visited the Centre of Excellence on Millets, witnessed the food processing, production, quality control and market‐ing activities.

On this occasion, Dr. Mittal addressed the scientific fraternity and the entrepreneurs already engaged

with IIMR and stressed on the need to popularize the nutri‐cereals and inspire the entrepreneurs through technology dissemination and applicable training programmes. He also detailed about sup‐port that may be available to incubatees.

ICAR Award for “Kadann Saurabh ” Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi has

announced First Prize to IIMR, Hy‐derabad under “Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi Hindi Patrika Puraskar Yojana” for the year 2015‐16for its publication “KADANN SAU‐RABH”(Vol‐6), an Annual Hindi journal published by ICAR‐Indian Institute of Millets Research, Hy‐derabad. The prize will be awarded during the ICAR’s foundation day in the month of July, 2017. Congratu‐

Institute Management Committee (IMC) meeting The 26thInstitute Management Committee (IMC) meet‐ing was held at IIMR on 24 June, 2017 under the Chair‐

manship of Dr. Vilas A Tonapi, Director, IIMR. Other members who participated in the IMC were: Dr. Mahen‐dra Kumar, Pr. Scientist, IIRR, Hyderabad; Dr. Sandhya‐Shenoy, Pr. Scientist, NAARM, Hyderabad; Dr. SS Balloli, Pr. Scientist, CRIDA; Dr. R Jagadeswar, Pr. Scientist &Head, RRS, PJSTAU, Hyderabad (in lieu of Dr. Raji Reddy); Sh. Kondapalli Sridhar Reddy, Khammam and Sh. Nagapuri Rajamouli, Warangal (Farmers Representa‐tives), Sh. AN Murthy, FAO, and Sh. Charles Ekka, SAO, IIMR, Hyderabad (Member‐Secretary). All the issues enlisted in the agenda relating to administration, finance, works, and other issues were reviewed. The minutes have been sent to the Council for approval.

Institute Research Committee (IRC) meeting Institute Research Committee (IRC) met under the chairmanship of Dr Vilas A Tonapi, Director, IIMR during 29‐30 June, 2017. The meeting reviewed the annual pro‐gress of the IIMR projects. Respective PIs of the project presented annual progress and output made during

2016‐17. Presentations focused on major aspects like time management, annual progress, output including publication, and future work‐plan. In total, progress made in the ongoing 46 institute and 9 externally funded projects was presented and discussed. The de‐tails of the projects, progress and output, and com‐ments and suggestions received during presentation are given in the proceedings. During the meeting six new

institute projects were approved and four ongoing pro‐jects were closed after completion. The details of the projects, progress and output, and comments and sug‐gestions made during the IRC meeting will be docu‐mented as “IRC proceedings". At the end of the meeting Chairman extended his appreciations for all the presen‐tations in general and expressed his satisfaction on the annual progress made in most of the projects. Dr. HS Talwar, PME cell in‐charge and Dr. IK Das, the member secretary organised the meeting.

ICAR- IIMR Farmers FIRST program to enhance income in dry-land Area ICAR‐Indian Institute of Millets Research, Rajendrana‐gar, Hyderabad is implementing Farmers FIRST project

at Nyalkal and Raikode Mandals of Sangareddy District. As a part of project, four interventions are being imple‐mented in the villages viz. Shamshaddinpur, Hulgera, Ibrahimpur, Chalki and Gangapur. Out of these selected villages, Interaction with project stakeholders was or‐ganized in Chalki and Gangapur villages on 17 June 2017. Total 900 improved quality Vanaraja poultry birds were given to 90 farmer families to enhance the income and nutritional security among children and women. Besides this, quality sorghum seeds of CSV 23 and CSV 27 varieties were also distributed to the farmers to in‐crease the farm income. Keeping in view the importance of pulse production for nutritional security in dryland areas, improved quality Red gram Seeds were distrib‐uted to project beneficiaries.

Dr. Sangappa, Scientist, IIMR explained the benefits of sorghum cultivation, importance of value added sor‐ghum health foods and growing demand from urban community. Dr. RV Rao and Dr. Yadav from ICAR‐Directorate of Poultry Research, Hyderabad explained about backyard poultry farming for income generation.


Sarpanchs from villages, State Agriculture Officers, and other stakeholders of project were present during the programme. Mr. Madan Mohan, Research Fellow, IIMR assisted Dr. Sangappa in consolidating the programme.

International Day of Yoga celebrated The ICAR‐ Indian Institute of Millets Research cele‐brated 3rd “International Yoga Day” on 21 June 2017. On

this occasion Prof M. Singa Rao, Yoga expert and Profes‐sor of Soil Physics (Retd.), Acharya NG Ranga Agriculture University, (now PJTSAU) was invited as a special guest. Prof Rao is practising yoga for past 35 years and is a qualified teacher. He has participated in many national and international yoga occasions. Dr VA Tonapi, Direc‐tor, IIMR welcomed Dr. Rao and mentioned that the in‐culcation of yoga in the daily life of all the staff members reduces the medical needs of the staff. Dr Singa Rao pre‐sented the staff on the benefits of yogasanas along with

the demonstration. He highlighted the asanas, mudras and pranayamas that can be practised every day for maintenance of physical and mental wellbeing. He intro‐duced the staff to different schools of yoga in India at present and many publicly available practical guidelines for the benefit of everybody. He enlightened that yoga also enhances teamwork and communication power in day to day office work, and also imparts a lasting sense of joy, peace and fulfilment. Staff of IIMR including RAs, SRFs and contractual persons enthusiastically partici‐pated in this event. A practical Yoga session was organ‐ized as per Common Yoga Protocol provided by Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India. Dr. Vilas Tonapi, Direc‐tor IIMR honoured the guest with a memento and thanked Dr KBRS Visarada, Principal Scientist and Mr. OV Ramana, ACTO for arranging the event of this Interna‐tional Yoga Day. Post meeting healthy millet drink and snacks were served to all. Keeping in view of the theme of the IYD this year as the “Yoga for health” video clip‐pings on “The Science of walking” and “Simple methods

of calming down” were circulated to all the staff through social media.

IIMR Recognized as Nodal Training Institute (NTI) by MANAGE National Institute of Agricultural Extension Management (MANAGE), Hyderabad has recognized ICAR‐ Indian In‐stitute of Millets Research (IIMR) as Nodal Training Insti‐tute (NTI) to offer two months Professional Certified Training program under central sector schemes viz. Agri‐Clinics and Agri‐Business Centres (AC & ABC) of De‐partment of Agriculture & Cooperation and Farmers Welfare, New Delhi. Nodal Training Institute will offer two months training on entrepreneurship development in general, and in millets based health products particu‐larly. Dr. Sangappa, Scientist, (Agril. Extension) has been appointed as Nodal Officer for the Nodal Training Insti‐tute. IIMR congratulates him and wishes him for great success in this endeavour.

Interaction meeting with Millets Entrepreneurs A meeting was held with budding entrepreneurs of mil‐lets on 21 June, 2017 at premises of ICAR‐ IIMR. About 10 entrepreneurs attended this meeting to know about millets value added technologies, mode of transfer of technology etc. A presentation on millets value chain was made by Dr. Sangappa, Scientist and further, dis‐cussions were also held on millets promotional activi‐ties. Later, entrepreneurs were shown and demon‐strated value added technologies at Centre of Excel‐lence. The event was coordinated by Mr. Madan, Ms. Sudha and other staff of the food processing and tech‐nology park. New IJSC committee The new Institute Joint Staff Council was constituted at ICAR‐Indian Institute of Millets Research on 12 June, 2017. Guest lecture Dr. Sangappa, Scientist, Agril. Extension, delivered a lec‐ture on “Empowerment of women farmers through proc‐essing and value addition of Millets” during the training program entitled Extension strategies for Mainstreaming Women in Agriculture held at National Institute of Agri‐cultural Extension Management (MANAGE), Hyderabad during 19‐21 June, 2017. Trainees appreciated the efforts made by the ICAR‐ Indian Institute of Millets Research, on processing and value addition in Millets. Many partici‐pants visited IIMR sales counter at MANAGE and pur‐chased value added products of millets.

Visitors Dr. Manoj Sharma, Assistant Professor, School of Bio‐technology, JNU, New Delhi and PI of the project on “Whole genome transcriptomic analysis of key genes

regulating sugar accumulation in sweet sorghum” visited IIMR on 8‐9 June, 2017 to review the project progress and also explore the possible collaborations between JNU and IIMR in the area of sweet sorghum and millets re‐search. Drs. Vilas A Tonapi, AV Umakanth, D Balakrishna and Avinash Singode interacted with him.

Dr. Abhishek Rathore, Head, IT Systems, ICRISAT, Patancheru visited IIMR on 19 June 2017. He had a de‐

tailed talk with all the breeders at IIMR on implementa‐tion of integrated breeding management system.

Dr. Gururaj Kulkarni, Manager (Logistics), IRRI, Philip‐pines visited IIMR on 19 June, 2017. He met the Direc‐tor IIMR and discussed issues related to the Biofortifi‐cation in cereals.

Trainees from NAARM As a part of their training programme, a group of twenty five trainees attending refresher course on Ad‐ministration and Finance Management for section offi‐cers, AAOs, AFAOs and Assistants, organized at ICAR‐NAARM during June23‐29, visited ICAR‐IIMR on 28 June, 2016. Dr. Sangappa, Scientist, briefed them about

the ongoing research and extension activities at the institute. Later the trainees were taken to Centre of Excellence (CoE) to demonstrate various millets based value added products. The team also visited IIMR Gene bank where, Dr. Avinash Singode briefed them about the Germplasm conservation. This visit at IIMR was co‐ordinated by Dr. Sangappa, scientist and Mr. Charles Ekka , SAO, IIMR.

Entrepreneurs

Mr. Avinash Krishnamurty, Chief Programme Officer, S3IDF Marketing agency, Bangalore visited IIMR on 5 June, 2017. Mr. Avinash had a detailed discussion with the Dr. Vilas A Tonapi, Director. In particular, they evinced keen interest in linking farmers and farm pro‐duction organizations with Millet Value chain. Mr. Anand N Kurade, Managing Director, Suman Project consultants (P) Ltd., New Delhi visited IIMR on 30 June, 2017.He met Dr. Vilas A Tonapi, Director, IIMR and dis‐cussed issues relating to millet health foods, training components, including the mechanism to evolve con‐tracts with the industries. Dr. B Dayakar Rao, Principal Scientist coordinated this visit.
