About the Summer Reading Challenge – FREE at your local libraryThe annual Summer Reading Challenge runs in libraries and encourages children aged 4 to 11 to read for pleasure during the summer holidays, a time when children can lose reading skills and confidence in the long break from school. There’s a different theme each year, and whether your child is an avid reader or just getting started, the Challenge will fire up their imagination. Research shows that taking part gives children a real sense of achievement and many teachers tell us that children who take part return to school with a new enthusiasm and confidence for reading.

How it WorksIt’s totally free and to get started all your child has to do is sign up at the library where they will be given a collector folder to keep a record of their Summer Reading Challenge journey. It’s not homework or a competition, but a personal challenge with the stickers and incentives appealing to children’s collecting instincts! Family TimeThe Challenge is a great time to share and talk about books as a family. Read yourself! Don’t feel guilty about sitting down with a book or newspaper in any language, you’re setting a good example – children will copy you!

Explore Your Library While your children are in the library, it’s a great chance to discover what’s available for adults, from reading groups, support with literacy, to crafts and free computer use, it’s your library, so let us help you make the most of it!

Meeting All Children’s Needs If your child finds printed books tricky or is vision impaired, there are alternatives: The free RNIB Library (which covers braille, giant print and audio books) can be used to borrow books for the Summer Reading Challenge and throughout the year, libraries can help you with this.
