As you receive the last Seavingtons’ News of 2017 it is, perhaps, time to take stock of what major changes the year has brought for our villages.
First, there is the re-development of the old Lift West site, formerly the village garage, providing 13 new homes, three of which will be owned by our community through the Seavington Community Land Trust (CLT). As you will see in the CLT’s report on pages 10 and 11 of this magazine the time has now come for the CLT to invite applications to rent these new homes.
This is an appropriate time for us all to acknowledge the generosity of Andrew Whitehouse, the Managing Director of Lift West, for his foresight and generosity in giving these homes to the community in which he developed his successful business. Thank you Andrew!
Then, there is the much improved broadband Internet services which finally allow almost all of us decent access to our e-mail, World Wide Web and video streaming.
May I draw attention to the earlier than usual copy date for next month’s magazine—12th December. This is to allow the magazine to be distributed before the Christmas and New Year breaks without imposing too much on our production and distribution volunteers.
With seasonal greetings and best wishes to you all.
David Froome

News from your Parish Council
Pauline Parsons (01460 240193)
The Parish Council is continuing contact with County Highways regarding several issues raised recently. The following replies have been received:-
Pavement in Church Lane – “Pavement in Church Lane has been added to the list, but due to the number of competing schemes for this small pot of money has not been recommended for the 2018/19 program. It will remain on the list and would be a contender for future years’ program.” A response has been made stating that there could be a ‘Health and Safety issue’.
Blocked Drain/Gully opposite the entrance to Rookesmead Lane - “Is the gully you mentioned on the inside of the bend located close to the bridge with a kerb and concrete apron. My highway superintendent has indicated that it was jetted recently. Please let me know if this is the case.” After speaking to nearby residents the Parish Council has responded that if the jetting was carried out then it has been ineffective. County Highways were advised sometime ago that it was felt the drain beneath the road leading to the stream has in fact collapsed.
David’s Lane – At the October Parish Council meeting the matter of large farm vehicles using the lane was discussed. The Parish Council felt that as we live in a rural area this will happen, particularly during the harvest seasons. However, County Highways were contacted regarding signage and the following was received :
“This matter is already in hand and we have a comprehensive package on order to upgrade the signs.” The matter of wide vehicles who are using David’s lane for passage, not access, has been raised with the local police, who have also been made aware of the Parish Council’s concerns regarding the speed of agricultural vehicles through the village. The local police thanked the Parish Council for bringing the matter to their attention and have indicated that they would monitor the situation."
The Small Improvement Scheme for the C5021 - should be submitted to the County Council shortly but a decision will probably not be had until early next year.
Purchasing our own SID – On receiving further information on the scheme which indicated that the only type of SID that could be purchased were those already used by County the Parish Council decided to stay with that scheme. The overall feeling was that only permanent signs will help

with reducing speeding traffic but it would seem that County Highways are not agreeable to this.
Alteration to 30mph signs and possible moving of Seavington St Michael sign on the western edge of the parish. As the Parish sign is actually in St Mary a request was made for it to be moved. The suggestion made by County Highways that signs should just indicate The Seavingtons has not been agreed by the Parish Council as a wish to retain the two village identities has been received.
As winter approaches the Ranger service will be decreasing the number of hours in the village. At this time of the year, when the leaves are falling, can residents who have drains close to their properties that are covered with leaves and other debris please try and keep them as clear as possible. Also any overhanging vegetation that encroaches on to pavements, roadways and obscures the sight lines for traffic and pedestrians should be cut back. If you are unable to do this an arrangement can be made with The Ranger Scheme. However, The Ranger cannot enter private property without permission.
At the next Parish Council meeting initial discussions will be taking place with regard to the Parish Precept that will be needed for the year 1st April 2018 to 31st March 2019. Any village clubs or organisations that may need Parish Council support should let us know.
The Community Support Grant that was given by Central Government several years ago decreased by some £500 last year from £700 to £230. For the coming year the amount will be less that £100 [if anything]. This will mean that to maintain services an increase will have to be made.

Thursday November 9th – Abbotsbury Sub Tropical Gardens “Past, Present and Future” - a talk by Stephen Griffith, Curator of the gardens.
With a large audience of members and guests we were treated to an informative and entertaining talk accompanied by beautiful photography enhanced by the newly installed projector screen.
Stephen Griffith joined Abbotsbury Gardens as a well travelled and knowledgeable botanist in the early 1990’s following a massive storm there in 1990 which demolished much of the gardens and has transformed and extended the gardens since then.
Abbotsbury Castle was built on the edge of Chesil Beach with its 1 acre walled garden, which was eventually to become Abbotsbury Sub Tropical Gardens, over 250 years ago. Stephen shared the family history of the owners and in particular William Fox-Strangways, the botanist, who travelled to the Himalayas on seed collecting trips and by the 1980’s there were over 4500 species of plants in the gardens. The position of the gardens offers plants a unique micro climate with a rain shadow effect which enables plants from all over the world to survive there.
The infrastructure of the gardens changed after the storm with the planting of euonymus for shelter and hardy palms from China to give the gardens some structure and in 1991 the gardens were cleared of all the fallen trees, the ponds full of salt were replanted and Japanese knotweed removed, which took nearly 6 years. Perennial planting then began to extend the all year interest in the gardens. Twenty peacocks were also the “enemy” in the gardens when Stephen started work there but they are now breeding golden pheasants which sleep in the trees but don’t damage the gardens!
In 2016 the gardens were awarded Jurassic Heritage Status and now they also boast a beautiful view of Chesil Beach, a magnolia avenue, a high view point looking west, a new restaurant and wedding venue and a constantly changing collection of plants and colour and interest throughout the year, all due to the knowledge and enthusiasm of its curator.
A visit is highly recommended but 2 of our members couldn’t wait that long after such an inspiring talk and visited next day!

A view from the field…
Chris Gough, Chairman SPFA ([email protected])
We are still looking for a volunteer to keep a regular watching brief on the playground equipment. There is a One Day Routine Playground Inspection Course organised through Ilminster Town Council in January which should give any volunteer a clear insight into what is required. The funding for the course will be met by the SPFA. Do please contact me if you feel that you might be interested in helping us and our community in ensuring that our children’s play equipment is regularly inspected.
A reminder please if your Seavingtons’ News arrives in time, is that we have a Christmas Market in the Hall on 25 November which should be a great opportunity to stock up on those seasonal gifts.
As a new facility for the hall, we’ve recently installed a large electrically operated projector screen for any of our hirers to use. The new screen has been partly paid for by contributions from the Gardening Club and the RSPB for which we are very grateful.
Finally, it was good to see so many people at the Remembrance Service held by the War Memorial on the field on Sunday 12 November where the service was conducted by Revd: Sue Hounsell.
As always, please contact me by email via SPFA to report any issues with the Hall or Playing Field.

The Robin is one of the most familiar of garden birds, especially in mid-winter. The sight of a puffed-up Robin on a cold frosty morning will bring a smile to your face, though much-loved, may-be aggressive and will not tolerate intruders to its territory.
Usually a plump bird with a distinctive red breast and face and a white underside. Its head, wings, rump, tail, bill and legs are all brown. Sexes are alike, apart from the brown fore-head which is ‘V’ shaped in females and ‘U’ shaped in males. Sings all year round but more gusty in the winter months– high-pitched and warbling. The alarm call is a sharp ‘TIK’ ‘TIK’.
Frequents bird-tables and feeders; loves fruit-cake and nuts and has been known to take meal-worms from the hand. Most gardeners know when you are using a spade the friendly Robin will be hovering for any juicy grub or worm you may just dig-up!
Ho! Ho! - have a good Christmas
Therefore all seasons shall be sweet to thee Whether the Summer clothe the general earth With greenness or Redbreast sit and sing Between the tufts of snow on the bare branch of mossy apple-tree.

Having recently celebrated Ian, one of our great posties, on the front of the magazine it seems fitting that the Seavingtons’ News should pay respect to another wonderful postie, Tim, who died suddenly on October 30th.
He will be greatly missed by us, his customers, by his colleagues, and especially by Ian with whom he shared this round. We are an incredibly lucky community to have such happy and dedicated posties who are always willing to do the best job they can, keeping the mail safe and rain-free whilst being friendly and seldom seen without a smile and a kind word. Thank you to them all, and especially to Tim, our thoughts are with his friends and family.

Village Oil Run
Nigel Key (01460 241540 or [email protected])
The e-mail address for contacting me is up and working and several people have already used it. It is a bit tortuous to find this on the Village web site so a quick link will be set up where I will place information updates and there will be a form to request oil. This should be available in January as our Web Master is in new Zealand until mid December.
I have had some requests for oil and will place an order at the end of November. Please contact me as this will be the last order until 2018 and the price is only going one way at present.
I have spoken to Western Fuel about the best oil for those of you who have an Aga, or equivalent. They can provide a bottle of additive which prevents the Aga burner from sooting up. This is best used at the same time as an oil delivery, but can be added separately if you have a big stick and a strong arm. It costs £17.50 + VAT and is sufficient for 1300 litres. If you would like some please let me know with your order.

News from Shepton Beauchamp Pre-School
Charlie Pattisson (01460 241396)
November has been a very busy month for the pre-schoolers! We had a stall selling sweets and cakes at the bonfire and fireworks night in the village. The chocolate marshmallow kebabs went down very well. To commemorate Remembrance Sunday, Father Geoff was presented with a collection of poppies decorated by the chil-dren to be put on display in the church, they all did a fantastic job. One week was spent fundraising for children in Need. We dressed in spots, raced ducks and collected ‘round pounds’ to fundraise for the cause.
Crafty Christmas was a great success, raising money for the pre-school. Children were able to make bunting, play-doh Christmas trees, decorate biscuits, plus many more Christmas themed activi-ties. Whilst the children made their crafts, the parents tucked into bacon butties, mince pies and cakes. Father Christmas also found time in his busy schedule to pop by.
After all that, December is set to be even busier. Here are some dates for your diary:
Christmas Singing in the church – This is on the 6th December and parents, grandparents, aunties, uncles, cousins etc. are invited to join in the fun!
Toddler Group – Our next meeting is the 7th December and it will be the toddler group’s Christmas party! Please bring a small wrapped present for Father Christmas to give to your little one and a plate of party food. All welcome, from 0 to pre school age chil-dren, along with their parents and/or grandparents.
Pre-school Christmas Party - This is on the 13th December.
For more information please call Natalie or Kath 07765 437301 or email [email protected] or www.sheptonbeauchamppre-school.co.uk or follow us on Facebook – or just pop in and meet us – we’d love to see you!

Helping the Homeless in Somerset at Christmas
Sarah Day (01460 249291)
Taunton Association for the Homeless (TAH) is the largest homelessness charity in Somerset. On any one night they support up to 200 people, across Taunton, Bridgwater, Wellington and West Somerset. They not only offer emergency housing but also supported accommodation and run their own college to help people build the skills and confidence that they need to get back into employment and live independently. You may have noticed work going on in East Reach, Taunton where a former pub is being con-verted to accommodation for homeless veterans.
As Christmas approaches and the temperature drops, life gets more difficult for the people that the charity supports. Even with a roof over their heads, for those who have recently lost their home or have lost contact with friends and family, Christmas is a difficult time. TAH holds an annual shoe-box appeal to put a smile on everyone’s faces over the festive period.
If you would like to put a shoebox together as a Christmas donation for lo-cal people who need help, suggested items include: Hats, Scarves, Gloves, Socks, Toothpaste, Toothbrushes, Deodorant, Shower gel, Shampoo, Sani-tary products, Sweets / chocolate.
Extra items, if you can, might include: Torch, Blankets, Towels, Thermals
Please don’t wrap the items, although the box can be (with the lid separate) but you can include a Christmas card if you would like to. There are various collection points in Taunton, a list of which can be found here http://www.tah.org.uk/support-us/homeless-shoebox-appeal/. However, I am happy to collect them from you and deliver them to Taunton – I would need them by 18th December to ensure that they were there on time for Christmas Day. If you would like to donate one or two items but not a full box, please let me know as these can be added together to make boxes for those in need of support.
TAH are always grateful for monetary donations to keep their services run-ning, particularly as local authority grants reduce. They have a Just Giving page at https://www.justgiving.com/tauntonhomeless.
At Christmas we are asked to support many charities and worthy causes. Taunton Association for the Homeless support local people who, for what-ever reason, find themselves without a bed for the night and an uncertain future.
Thank you for your support.

South Somerset Local Plan (2006–2028) Issues and Options Consultation
South Somerset District Council is reviewing the Local Plan that was adopted in March 2015; this review will cover the period 2014 to 2034.
As a first stage in the process, it is consulting on the issues and options that have emerged this far; and produced a document to stimulate debate on the best way to provide a new policy framework for planning and development in the District up until 2034. The consultation period will be from 26th October 2017 until 12 Noon on 11th January 2018.
The document starts to consider the options for where new growth may go in the future; and identifies potential new sites for housing, employment and other forms of development in the various towns and villages across the District.

Carols and Classics by Candlelight
A pre-Christmas hidden gem performed annually at the All Saints Church Merriott (TA16 5PS) provides an evening of Classical and Festive arrangements. This will be the 9th year that the Fisher Sinfonia has performed at this 15thC church providing an unmissable evening of string ensembles with organ and piano accompaniment.
2017 has been an extremely busy year for the string musicians whose international orchestral commitments has seen them performing with major UK orchestras across all the continents (excluding Antarctica!). They use the occasion at Merriott to meet as friends, then to entertain and enthral a wide audience from over a 40 mile radius. This annual concert has amassed a significant following of appreciative classical and festive music lovers, raising funds for the church. The Carols & Classics concert on Saturday 16th December, will no doubt be another sell out, with mince pies and refreshments before the concert to start the Christmas festivities. 7:00pm refreshments for a 7:30pm concert start .
Tickets are £8 available from Osbornes Store, Broadway, Merriott; Crewkerne Information Centre or contact 07870 404631 / 01460 76360, please book early to avoid disappointment.

I hope you are all enjoying and taking advantage of the fabulous Christmas goods on display in the shop. It has attracted lots of compliments already from customers. The featured artist this month is Jane Morgan providing more colour and the opportunity for choosing some really lovely hand-crafted presents – or something special for you.
Christmas Raffle tickets are now available, at £1 each with some great prizes, starting of course with a turkey from Bonner’s. Please buy some when you come down to the shop. The draw will be in the shop on Saturday 16th December at 3.30pm, when Father Christmas will be visiting us and there will be carol singing, mince pies and mulled wine - a great event for the whole family. This is free and provides an opportunity to celebrate Christmas with friends and neighbours and for the shop to say thank you for all your support throughout the year.
If you aren’t lucky enough to win the case of Christmas wines in the Raffle, you can still purchase the same selection in the shop at a cost of £40 – please talk to the volunteer on the till about getting a case made up for you.

A big thank you to all our volunteers for their wonderful efforts -without them the shop could not continue. Could volunteering in the local community be one of your New Year’s resolutions? If so, please talk to me or any of the volunteers in the shop – we would welcome more volunteers to help in both the shop and the café. Full training and the lovely apron are both provided - and it's fun!

Star of Stage (and Screen?) from Seavington
Julie Fowler (01460 54007)
The Christmas production at The Warehouse Theatre, Ilminster will be “Goodnight Mr Tom”. Set during the dark and dangerous build-up to the Second World War, the play follows the story of sad young William Beech, who is evacuated to the idyllic English countryside and starts to build a remarkable and moving friendship with the elderly recluse, Tom Oakley and his dog, Sammy.
At a recent audition held for the star role of Sammy, the part was awarded to Taylor, owned by Gill Lawrence who lives in School Lane. There are high hopes that Taylor, who will transform into Sammy for the run of the production, will be ambitious enough to consider transferring to the big screen in the future – eat your heart out, Lassie!
The play will be performed from 6-9 December at 7.30pm and there will be a matinee at 2.30pm on 9 December. Tickets are £10 (Students £5) and are available on line at www.thewarehousetheatre.org.uk or from Harrimans Menswear, Silver Street, Ilminster.
Celebrate Twelfth Night with Teasing the Cat

Teasing the Cat’s broad repertoire reflects their varied musical backgrounds, encompassing jazz, Klezmer, early and classical music as well as traditional folk music. So come and celebrate Twelfth Night at the Theatre!
Doors open at 6.45pm and the performance will commence at 7.30pm. Tickets can be purchased as detailed above.

Village Harvest Home
Sheila Reyland (01460 241238)
Put the date in next year's diary - Saturday 13th October 2018
The ladies who do the flower arrangements in St Michael's Church have felt for some time that perhaps not many villagers actually see their efforts. In order to raise much needed funds for St Michael's Church Trust ( together with a named charity) they are planning to have Coffee Mornings in the Church when it has been decorated for any Church Festival.
The one big event being planned is now a ' Village Harvest Home' and this will take place next year on the weekend after the Harvest Festival celebrations in St Michael's - Saturday 13th October 2018.
Further details of this and any other events will be given as we get nearer to the dates and plans are formulated.
Flowers to Celebrate - An anniversary, christening, remembrance, birthday. The flower ladies are prepared to do special displays. If you would like more details please contact Sheila Reyland on 01460 241238.
Would You Like to Join the Team? - None of the ladies that decorate the Church at the moment are trained florists or flower arrangers, but it is surprising what can be achieved with the help of some oasis. Normally the whole team decorate the Church for Easter, Harvest Festival and Christingle.
An annual rota drawn up is for one or two ladies to provide the flowers during one month and this is, at the moment, no more than twice a year. More help is always greatly appreciated. I would also be pleased to hear from anyone who may have shrubs in their garden that would provide foliage when the major displays are being done.
