Thursday, September 30, 2010 Obituaries The Brownsville States-Graphic page A6 Friday, October 3, 1980 College Hill area on National Register Work begun July 1979 by the local Historical Society, culminated successfully this week when property owners in the College Hill Historic District received letters saying that their property had been placed on the National Register of Historic Places. The College Hill Historic District is recognized as possessing unusual significance to the history of Tennessee. Beyond this, inclusion in the National Register assures that the State Historical Commission will review all federal projects to determine any effect they may have on the property. Further, all National Register sites are eligible for federal preservation grants-in-aid administered by the State Historical Commission. Not every home in the area is included. Those whose homes are included have received letters to that effect. After being accepted by the State, the District project was forwarded to Washington, D.C. where the final approval was made. Silverstein replaces Felsenthal as Reader Morton Felsenthal retired as lay reader for Temple Adas Israel September 10 with Fred Silverstein Jr. succeeding him. At the service, Mr. Silverstein told the group he was happy to carry on in the footsteps of his great-grandfather, Emil Tamm. Mr. Tamm was lay reader from 1867 to 1907. Mr. Silverstein said, “It is a unique heritage that I feel, the roots being found planted deeply in Judaism, and in America and in Brownsville. Many years and much sacrifice and great toil support it.” “Our Town” marathon The First Annual Brownsville-Haywood County Parks and Recreation Marathon was run Saturday, September 27. Fourteen people participated in the marathon in hopes of winning the $50 first place prize over the six-mile course. Randy Taylor of Jackson won the purse with a time of 36.20 followed by Bob Saffel of Jackson. Third place went to local runner Phil Smith with a time of 37.43. Thursday, October 4, 1990 Adult students respond to new education opportunity Adult Basic Education Coordinator Susan Scott reported that “close to 130” adult students have signed up for this fall’s classes. The overwhelming response has sent Scott scurrying to the state for more money for additional teachers. That request appears to be approved. Scott also said that she had received an excellent response from 25- 28 teachers in the system who are interested in teaching the twice a week classes to adults who want to continue their secondary level education. Groundbreaking ceremonies for new housing units A large contingent of local, state and federal government officials gathered September 26 for the groundbreaking ceremonies for a new public housing complex in Brownsville. The Tam Street complex will consist of 35 three-bedroom units being constructed by D.C. Construction of Brownsville. Carolyn Flagg, Executive Director of the Brownsville Housing Authority coordinated the ceremonies and luncheon that followed. Hood wins race in Jackson Brownsville’s Ricky Hood drove his 1980 Monza to a first place win in the Pro Class racing September 22 at the Jackson Dragway. Hood battled a 50 car field down to a final match up with Shelby County’s Gene Smally and his 1970 Mustang. Thursday, October 5, 2000 Committee hopes Blues week brings “green” to festival Successful from nearly every measurement, last week’s 2000 Blues Festival is under the microscope this week. Preliminary figures indicate the festival made a profit this year, a fact that may be due to the new I-40, exit 56 site. Gate admission fees meant the committee could offset costs not covered by sponsorships. Total estimated attendance for Friday, Saturday and Sunday is between 3,000 and 5,000 according to the early figures. The West Tennessee Delta Heritage Center also reported a large number of visitors Friday and Saturday. Hatchie Refuge celebrates National Wildlife Refuge Week Refuge Manager Marvin Nichols said that the Hatchie National Wildlife Refuge would celebrate National Wildlife Refuge Week by providing public fishing opportunities at Oneal Lake during the week of October 8 – 14. Nichols said Oneal Lake was originally constructed to provide habitat for migrating waterfowl and for the wildlife observation. Fishing at Oneal Lake has become extremely popular during special events held for the elderly, youth and anglers with disabilities. The lake will be open for fishing from the bank or piers only. Mrs. Nevie Randolph was born in Dancyville Community of Haywood County on November 19, 1930, the daughter of the late William Joe Manley, Sr. and the late Nettie Pearl Stokes Manley. She was educated in the Haywood County Public Schools and was married 1955 to the late Theodore Roosevelt “T. R.” Randolph, Sr. who died in 1998. Mrs. Randolph was a former resident of Houston, TX before returning to West Tennessee in 1997 to enjoy her remaining years near family and friends. She had been a resident of Somerville since 1998. Mrs. Randolph was a member of the Somerville First Baptist Church and will be remembered as a person who enjoyed helping and giving to others. Her many interests included traveling, reading her Bible and special times with her family. She was an avid fan of Loretta Lynn and always lived by four principles, faith, family, community and fun. Survivors of Mrs. Randolph include her daughter: Amy Caraway (James) of Somerville; her son: Ted Randolph (Debra) of Tyler, Texas; three grandchildren: Jamie Caraway, Amber Caraway, Jennifer Carney (Jason); her sisters: Gertrude Davis and Jesse Turner of Jackson, Lottie Davis and Wilma Campbell of Brownsville; her brother: Everett Manley of Jackson; three step-granchildren: James Cowart, Amanda Cowart, LeAnn Cowart; and five step-great-grandchildren.
