    OCATION Urban West Texas

DISCRIPTION Intent was to design a landscape reminiscent of the West Texas land-

cape through the investigation in the grains of a chosen piece of wood. The art on theandscape and residence are also derived from those investigations. The residence and

and art needed to be a visual representation and continuation of the underlying spirit of

ur chosen grain. The residence was to also be environmentally conscious in design.

    EVIVAL/A MODEST ASPIRATION

LOCATION Passage DuCaire, Paris, France`DISCRIPTION Isolated in the center of Paris, Passage DuCaire is currently stagnatedby the local textile and clothing industry. While the passage was once a vibrant socialscene it is now a sore in the city, infected by abandoned buildings, thugs, and prosti-utes. Any plans for further development of the site have come to a halt. Now, with the

passage being used for storage and local distribution of industrial textile goods, it hasdriven out families, tourists, and locals as there are no services to provide for them. Atnight the streets quickly become unsafe. The idea for the intervention was to open up

major axis, create public spaces, and redirect the passage usage to the pedestrian, executing this with a cultural consciousness and contextual responsibility to the continu-ty of the city of Paris.PROFESSOR Dean Andrew Vernooy & Chair of Instruction, Dr. Clifton EllisWHEN Summer 09

    QUATICENTER/PERMANENT ROOF STRUCTURE

LOCATION Texas Tech Recreation Center Pool, Lubbock, TX

DISCRIPTION The design for the new permanent roof structure is constructed with a

poured-in-place, post-tensioned concrete slab. The roof slab rests on columns that sit

behind insulated operable glass panels. The roof was designed to have elegant over-

apping layers that shelter the pool without making the interior space feel too confined. As the individual slabs have their own unique movement they have a cohesive sense of

direction. They are reminiscent of a sheet in the wind. At the west facade, the material

changes to a reflective permeated thin metal sheeting. This provided a playful light to

enter the skylights in the baths and main entryway.

called the moir effect. Created two identical surface patterns separated 1.15 meters, creating the moir effect.
