SCADS MEETING A BIG SUCCESS.

The Southern California Area DXers get together, held October 20 and 21 in

Tustin, Calif. was a big success. 53 SWLs and DXers were in attendance. Many

brought radio gear for display and DXing. Talks included interesting topics

for both the novice and experienced DXer. Mildred Greene was also there. For

those who do not know Mildred, she is the "adopted Grandmother" of Tom Meyer,

Host of Happy Station Program, Radio Nederland. We in the Los Angeles area know "Grand -Ma Greene" for her weekly calls to Ray Bream, of KABC Radio talk program. Ray is also a SWLer. The attendance proves that DXers are anxious to

meet, share ideas and learn from each other. Don Johnson is to be complimented for the organization and the running of the interesting two day meet.

It was exactly twelve bulletins ago that we took the chance that a light-hearted,

moderately entertaining format might gain the general acceptance of the readers.

Whether the result is due to understanding, approval, sympathy, or just complete

The day the ionosphere disappeared over Hawaii

HONOLULU iAPI - Earth- quake scientists say some mysterious happenings - smacking of science-fiction - occurred in the atmosphere about an hour before a major temblor rocked the largest of the Hawaiian Islands last April.

"It's too much like Buck Rogers - we have no explana- tion for it yet.'' says Dr Augustine S. Furumoto. of the the University of Hawaii.

"Perhaps it was just coin- cidence but that earthquake had many peculiarities associated with it which deserve the attention of seismologists

An hour before the earth- quake rocked the coastal town of Hilo on Hawaii Island - about 200 miles southeast of Oahu Island. where Honolulu is located . he said these events occurred

- The radiowave-reflecting laver. of the ionosphere some 50

But then. "right after the earthquake. the ionosphere began reller!mg again 5, i

say, it was too much like Buck Rogers....

"As for the Navy's 'Omega: which had begun drifting about an hour before the earthquake. it hit its maximum drift just about the time of the oc- currence of the quake and then began to recover....'

The April 26 earthquake. centered offshore about 12

miles northeast of Hilo and about 35 miles deep. registered 6 2 on the Richter scale - the same reading recorded for the temblor that virtually levelled the Nicaraguan capital of Managua some months ago.

It was the strongest quake to strike the Hawaiian Islands in

more than a century and ap- parently only its off-shore origin prevented more serious property damage and human in-

iuries

As it was. buildings were damaged in downtown Hilo. there were several injuries_ and there were numerous landslides in suburban Hilo And buildings shook in down- town Honolulu, 260 miles to the northwest

In the latter connection, Ur Furumoto said another peculiar thing about the quake was that our i seismographic i in

strumento in Oahu . kept on vibrating

"The ground vibrated for about two hours .. i after the quake was first registered whi,re:w It should have died oli

in about a half-hour or 45

minutes_..

-We're still trying to figure out the reason for this

Furumoto said detection of

the missing ionosphere before the earthquake was an unex- pected outgrowth of a new University of Hawaii research protect.

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Soviet Union has stopped inter- fering with Russian language broadcasts of the Voice of America, the British Broad- casting Corp. and West German Radio, State Department offi- cials said today.

They said the so-called jam- ming ended Monday evening and affected not only Russian language broadcasts but those in the dialects of Georgia, Uz- bek and Armenian. English lan- guage broadcasts were nevet jammed, the officials said.

The State Department said the Soviets centime to interfere with broadcasts by Radio Lib- erty, a private operation fi- nanced in part by the U.S. gov- ernment. A British Broad- casting Corp. spokesman said the Soviets also are continuing interference with Israel's trans- mission to the Soviet Union.

The State Department offi- cials said they welcome the de- velopment and hope it will con- tinue-

They gave several possible reasons for the da-. -lopment.

One possibility, they said, is that the Soviet Union wants to offset any criteism in the up- coming session of the European Security Conference. The con- ference resumes Tuesday and an important issue will concern humanitarian factors, including the freer flow of information.

Another official speculated that Moscow was trying to re- furbish its image in the wake of adverse reaction in the United States and western Europe to the recent trials and harass- ments of Russian dissidents.

The officials also said the Russians may have acted be- cause of concern over growing criticism in Congress to repre- sive acts within the Soy iet Union by the iloscow govern- ment.

The broadcasts had limn jammed continuously since 1968

and for long periods since 1949.

Time it was. And what a time it was! 1058 GMT...two minutes short of "high -noon" in

Holland, Sunday, August 19th, 1973...the end of an era for the best known of the so-

called "hobby pirates," World Music Radio.

With a run of ten years, WMR probably was the oldest and longest -running of the pirates -

commercial or otherwise. Previously under the name of "Radio Europop," WMR had, after

moving throughout Holland, finally settled in a farm barn near the small Dutch village

of Zydewind.

"RAID!"

by

Serge C.P. Neumann The Netherlands

WORLD OF

ACM

Recorded programs from 7 different studios in Europe, as well as live disc jockey work from Zydewind, accounted for the weekends -only

fare. The staff of ten volunteers presented multi -language programs on Saturdays, called

"SCANDI WEEKEND", and English language top 40 programs on Sundays. Programs were broad-

cast on 6250 kiloHertz with 200 watts, via a "close line type" antenna. Reception reports

from Japan were considered the farthest!

August 19th was like many preceding Sundays. Dutch disc jockey Theo Verstraeten was at

the helm, punching those slogans & jingles that proclaim: "...the brightest sound on the

international radio dial..." (So "bright" was their sound, at least in the minds of some

listeners, that several thousand reception reports were received last year alone.)

What any land -based pirate broadcaster must be prepared for came that Sunday at 1058 GMT -

albeit 10 years after WMR first went on the air. That eventful knock on the barndoor by

authorities...representatives of the police and Dutch Posts, Telephone and Telegraph (PTT) -

the latter being the ultimate authority for all broadcasts originating in Holland. They

were there to close up shop. (A Hollywood movie scriptwriter might have called it "The

Last Sign Off.")

Why the authorities moved to close down WMR at this point remains unclear. WMR was non-

commercial, weekend -only, and not endangering any fixed services. It provided no inter-

ference to other broadcasters. Why now? As one close source says: "WMR was raided at

the request of the BBC Monitoring Service, because the programs of WMR were becoming

too popular."

To add to the curiosity of the raid, was the fact that only a few vital pieces of equip-

ment were confiscated. No arrests resulted from the raid. In fact, the Dutch PTT people

were so impressed with the WMR operation, that they stayed at the WMR barn for more than

four hours and "just talked." The atmosphere during those four hours was described as

cordial.

The future of WMR is uncertain. Programming and operation of WMR was made possible by

a WMR Listeners Club, and through occasional donations. It's been intimated that WMR

may return to the air in about six months, but from a new land -based location inside

England itself (where such pirates "are running rampant"). But for now, those QSL cards

and related WMR memorabillia have become valuable additions to anyone's collection of

verifications.

The shutting -down of WMR by authorities can perhaps be equated to an era in the 1920's,

when authorities were busting the speak-easies. Everyone wanted them, but it was the

law....

SPEEDX TRA S THE PROJECTS 0/V/S/ON of SPEEOX

Projects Coordinator- Jock While 780 NW Wo//u/o Ave Gresham Oregon 97030

Publication and distribution of the Sl'EED1 "WORLD UTILITIES Dlers HANDBOOK" was unavoidably delayed for some four or five weeks due to technical difficulties arising with the original or "master" copy. The net result was that several pages were con- sidered unreadable and distribution was withheld pending satisfactory correction.

Such action not only involved the reprinting of both sides of some twenty-one pages scattered rather randomly through the publication, but also included the disassembly of each handbook and subsenuent reinsertion of the corrected sheets each in its proper sequence and location.... To say the least, a rather arduous task and one not too well adapted to the mechanical techniques employed when collating originally. Further, a round or two of cost renegotiations ensued as lines of responsibility for the mishap were determined and various adjustments explored....Another brief delay followed until final resolution was reached.

However, as of this writing (1 November), all obstacles appear to have been overcome and distribution will likely proceed within a matter of days when the entire production run has been completed, inspected, and accepted. We sincerely regret this delay, and extend profound apologies to all those who have already ordered WUDXH; but after view- ing it as originally produced, we were rather certain you would not have been satisfied with the reproduction quality as it was. From this died -in -the -wool ute-chaser who has spent a great deal of time with it, it can be said that the "D1 value" of WUDI H will have been well worth a few weeks' additional wait...and be reasonably sure you will agree :::

The "Most Non-QSLs" award has gone the way of the dodo and Radio Free Alcatraz. It seems that no SPEEDXer was willing to claim more than one turn -down during 1972...al- though we did receive a couple of responses relating some rather unusual or ambiguous wording in their "regrets" letters. If some sort of ground rules can be devised for such non -verifications, perhaps we'll come up with a Select Award in this category. (This editor has one in his files for a 1970 logging of a USN vessel on duty in Vietnam which states: "Naval regulations prohibit dissemination of information related to communications capabilities. However, if it were permissable to do so, I would be most happy to confirm your accurate report."). Maybe there are others who have received similiar replies from either military or civilian outlets and some kind of recognition can be initiated What say??

There have been several other suggestions for future Select Awards which should stimulate wides^read response from several corners. Some of these may emerge early in the new year when "Hest", "Most", "Least", or whatever for 1973 can he determined.

One particular achievement has been brought to our attention with several nominations for a Select Award. Unfortunately, we do not at the present time have sufficient details concerning this singular feat to fully confirm it, although with MUDXH matters soon to

be out of the way, we'll conduct a more thorough inquiry. It is understood that SriEDler and on -the -air radio personality for hadio Nederland, Serve Neumann, may have set some sort of record for QSL "return time". Reports here vary from the almost unbelievable time frame of h minutes to something near l hours for the entire process of logging to verification receipt. Certainly an elapsed time within such a range is worthy of some kind of recognition and since there have already been a number of nominations, we'll issue an appropriate Select Award upon confirmation of the details.

The purpose of SlEEDX Select Awards is to acknowledge accomplishments that may be outside the scope of more conventional awards, but worthy of recognition. We have set

up some with the QSL size offering a wnile back, and will have others;. out if any SeEEDXer knows of an outstanding achievement in the SWLing hobby on the part of another SPEEDIer, he can nominate this person for an award by writing SPEEDITRAS with the complete details. Nominations sho-rld be kept to areas such as "Large", "Fast", "Small", etc.

Word has just arrived that Whitey Herman, HAP -9, has undergone open heart surgery.

Last month I reported he had had eye surgery. I'm happy to say he came through that UK.

Please see October HAPpenings for Whitey's QTH. Your cards and letters are needed.

If you have written me in October and not received a reply, it's due to a cold. I

was put out of action for 4 days, and will hopefully get "out from under" shortly.

Christmas is around the corner now. You no doubt will be looking for a pre -selector, headphones, or that dream machine by Drake, Allied, etc under the tree. But whether you

get it depends mainly on if your parents make that special unselfish effort, or if you

put I amount of overtime in at the shop. HAPees can't do that. In the main, their

money is needed just to live week -by -week. 9R% of all HAYees are not employed. So the

prospects of their dishing out $100 to $5O0 for a receiver is non -existant. That is why

HAP is here. Our receivers are not the best. Most are repaired by Don Johnson, and

range in age from 5 to 35 years old. however, they work and provide the HAPee with a

useable rig. Our stock in receivers, headphones, etc is not large. Various reading

matter and operating money is short. For each HAPee who receives SYEEDI "free", HAY pays

$5.00 toward their membership. Overseas SYEEDI memberships cost us $14.00 or more depend-

ing upon the location. We scent, so far, over $135.00 in membership fees this year, not

counting renewals. When you consider these figures DO NOT include other expenses and

you can see why your donation is so very important!! Nit's why I Began our Christmas Fund drive in September. To help our work and get your name on our special Christmas

card page, send your $1.00-82.00 to: Christmas Tree % SPEEDY, PO Box 321, Santa Ana CA

on our Christmas card page. Donations accepted to December 31.

FLASH:!! In a recent letter received from Clayton Howard, I was offered the opportun-

ity-UT-recording HAP segments on cassette for replay over DI Party Line. HAP will be

heard each month regularly once details are complete. Our sincere thanks to Clayton

Howard and HCJB. Also one very important OM for bringing Clayton and me together...Bill

Paschke. Bill had Ur and Mrs Howard at his home while they were in the States. They

visited Bill twice, and HAP was a major topic.

RADIO IN CHILE -1973

In the forefront of the political turmoil which paralized Chile for the greatest part of 1973, the radio industry predictably underwent some drastic changes in the wake of the September coup. As polarized as

the political parties which controlled them, Chilean radio stations filled the airwaves with political rhetoric and propaganda leaving no doubt as to whose side they were on. To the end, Chilean radio fought the battle only to be silenced on 11 September by a military coup d'etat., Now back under government censorship, Chilean radio is today much tamer than before but many interesting DX possibilities still exist.

Radio had always been a part of Chilean political life but never to

the extent reached during 1972-73. To explain the escalation of involve-

ment one must be aware of the disasterous decline in advertizing revenues

which occurred in the months following the nationalization of major

Chilean industries by Allende in 1971. The financially weakened stations

were easy prey for takeover and the parties of the Unidad Popular (UP)

were quick to seize the opportunity. Not to be outdone the opposition

parties also moved to expand their influence vowing to preserve freedom

of speech". When the dust cleared, the count stood at 33 stations in

the hands of the Socialists, 29 controlled by the Christian Democrats,

and 28 controlled by the Communists. The battle lines were drawn.

Such was the involvement of Chilean radio in the political conflict

that just prior to the coup only 10 of the 156 operating stations could be considered politically neutral. 44% of the stations supported the government of Salvador Allende while fully 50% stood in opposition. In the escalating struggle for popular support, the government used every trick imaginable to silence the opposition radio voices. Harassment, such as the cutting of power to radios Minería, Agricultura, Nuevo Mundo, and Ybngay only a week prior to the coup, was commonplace and most opposition broadcasters found themselves in court as often as they were on the air.

The coup itself began early in the morning of 11 September when naval units moved to occupy key positions in Valpariso. Alerted, Allende immediately turned to radio, as he had so

many times before, to rally public support and block the coup. But, the armed forces had anticipated that move and only Com.unist controlled Radio Magallanes was on the air at

9:20 A.M. to broadcast his "no renunciaré" speech. Most stations never got on the air and 24 hr. stations like Pórtales

were silenced in the first wave. Defiantly Radio Magallanes remanined on the air urging workers to fight but eventually it

too was silenced.

The silence created by the military was also broken by

them later the same day with the appearance of an "official" radio on 6150 khz. Identifying as "La red de

Radiodifusión de las Fuerzas Armadas y Carabineros de Chile" this station broadcast ,strangely enough, non-stop

popular music broken only by "comunicados" or short announcements which

advised of the curfew, issued instructions, and advised certain persons

to report to the nearest military or police officer.

Other stations did not begin to reappear until the 15th of September

when Radio Presidente Balmaceda was noted in parallel with the military

net carrying music, bulletins, and commercial -like messages promoting the

slogans "kilo de la Renovacibn' and "Año de la Reconstrucción". Eventually

Portales and Corporación also returned and, on 24 September, were noted

in parallel with all other Chilean shortwave stations airing the junta

produced program "Chile en el Mundo". A defense of the junta's action,

this program, which was noted several nights, began with the announcement

"En las bandas de 19,25,31 y 49 metros las emisoras chilenas con sus equipos de onda corta presentan Chile en el Mundo. A raves de esta transmis- sión Chile informa el mundo de la

realidad que se vive en este extremo de

Sud América. Ustedes conocerán lo que

piensan los chilenos, lo que quiere el

pueblo lo que Chile significa para el

resto del mundo. Todo esta realidad en estos programas que serán de Chile

pare el mundo."

which loosely translated means "In the bands of 19,25,31,and 49 meters,

Chilean radio stations with their short wave transmitters, present

"Chile en el Mundo". Through this broadcast Chile informs the world of

the reality that lives in this extreme of South America. You will know

what the Chilean thinks, what the people want, and what Chile means to

the rest of the world. All this reality in these programs which are...

from Chile for the world."

As of this writing commercial broadcasting is once again being noted

on Chilean radio although the 8:00 P.M. curfew has greatly shortened the

broadcast day. In general, Radio Presidente Balmaceda, Radio Mineria and

the other opposition radios appear to have returned to near normal

schedules but Radio Corporación and Radio Portales show some interesting changes. Formerly UP controlled stations these two broadcasters have

greatly reshuffled their programming. Relays of other stations are not

uncommon resulting in some unusual marriages. Corporación has, for

example been noted relaying the FM service of its former enemy, Radio

Minería, even to the extent that that stations signoff was carried instead

of its own. One suspects the new management is less concerned with

identity than with appearing normal to the outside world.

The return to normalcy is likely to be a slow process and, since the

cause of of the previous financial troubles has not been eliminated this

return is likely to produce some consolidation. One should also not rule

out the possibility of nationalization of the radio industry although

this is not likely to occur soon. Just in case, however, you'd be well

advised to get your QSLs while you can.

BRAZILIANS UP FOR SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIP

Many Brazilian broadcasters have recently reactivated little used

frecuencias in the 19 and 25 meter bands to expand their coverage of the

soccer playoffs now in progress. These playoffs will determine the

national champion and are, needless to say, being followed with great

interest as teams from twenty states are participating. Matches are

played on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays with occasional

Friday matches.

One example of a reactivated frequency is the widely noted reactivation

reactivation of 15135 khz by Radio Record/Panamericana. Another is

Radio Timbiras which has reactivated 15215 khz. No doubt other stations

will come and go with the fortunes of the local entry providing DXers

with an excellent opportunity to log some otherwise unheard Brazilians.

One note of caution, however, as identifying stations may be a problem

as often "Cadeias" or "Redes" are formed to reduce costs. The matches

will last until March 1974. It could be a good DX season.

Europe/Africa Roundup Ciao! A lot of news and tidbits has been piling up here, so

we'll do are best T -cut down on the file this month. First off, thanks

go to new reporters: Mike Doboeenaki, Jack Jones, Jim Meehan, Richard

Shaftan (one side of page for loggings, please!), and a very special

welcome to kr. Sridhar who sends his reports all the way from India. Keep

those reports coming in.

Also, a few items of correction/forgetfulness. Dan Sheedy writes

us that his logging of the Pointe Notre relay, RTVC, Congo is 4843 not

4863, his typo, says he's getting old. Who isn't? Also, our "scusi'e' to

Mrs. Kathy Testa who we so ingraciously left out in last month's expose

of the recent BAD Guy's meeting. Sorry.

Well, on to the news. World -Wide DX Club items appear with their

permission.

SIO codes: We would appreciate it if from now on you would all use SIO

code when reporting the quality for your loggings to this column, along

with the other SWBC DX logging columns also. Get into the habit, o-kay?

Roundup DX Calender: From time to time Roundup will provide a listing of

national holidays for some countries in Europe and Africa. These holidays

may mean extended broadcasts in the respective countries or you just might

want to wish the station a happy holiday in your next report. Your comments

would be appreciated on this feature. Our source is the U.S. State Dept.

November/December National Holidays:

November 7-8 U.S.S.R. (Great October Socialist Revolution) 24 Zaire (National Holiday) 28 Mauritania (Independence Day) 29 Yugoslavia Proclamation Day of the Socialist Federal

Republic) December 1 Central African Republic (Independence Day)

6 Finland (Independence Day) 11 Upper Volta (Republic Day) 12 Kenya (Independance Day) 18 Niger (Republic Day)

Also, don't forget in addition to these national holidays, Christmas on

December 25th and New Year's Day on January 1st.

Would an unlisted address help a DX'er? - continued: Mike Hardester from

Oalifornia sends us this note: TI read with interest your item (September

SPEED%) regarding 'Would an unlisted address help a DX'er?' The same thing

occured with me; however, I did eventually receive a QSL. As I recall, a

couple of years ago, postal workers in Accra were then copying addresses

of DX'ers sending reports to R. Ghana and selling them to a group who in

turn wrote letters requesting penpals in the USA. After a time, the "penpal"

was then given a hardluck story and money or a gift was requested. I seem

to recall the group was broken up by Ghana authorities, but apparently they

might be at it again, only doing a double business by starting up the pen

pal business and stealing the letters to R. Ghana. It might be interesting

to see if other DX'ers are experiencing something similar. It could

behoove USA & Canadian DX'ers if someone contacted a local embassy and

explained the situation."

Quite possible Mike. Any comments or experiences from other

members?

RTTY DXING A BRIEF INTRODUCTION

by BRAD LANES

Did you ever think that you could DX on the Radioteletype (RTTY) mode? RTTY is not only the interference bug of SWBC DXers, but is a vast unused type of DX fun.

Radioteletype transmissions are meant for the two stations involved and not the DXer. (As we all know all Utility braoadcasts are meant this way tool) The signal is beamed Point -to Point from one station to another.

You can tell a RTTY signal by Its long and fast rate of pulses. Once you hear this you'll never forget its sound.

A radioteletype station Is not very hard to set up. It does not take up much room and as far as costs go it can be surprisingly inexpensive. The cheapest that one could expect to get away with is around $300. This INCLUDES the receiver. The cost can go as high as $2000 for a deluxe set-up. I use a DX150 and a SX190 and find it most suitable.

Some of the stations that you can copy are 1) The Associated Press 2) TABS (The Soviet News Agency) 3) The U.S. National Weather Service 4) United Press International 5) RCA and ITT 6) Ham Radio Operators 7) Many Foreign News and Press Agencies What does the basic RTTY setup consists of? Well, it consists mainly

of 3 basic pieces of equipment. First, of course, is the receiver. It should be of good quality. That

is, it should be selective, sensitive and have a BFO or product detector for SSB reception.

Secondly, you must have a teletype converter. This equipment converts the radio signal, into a signal compatable with the signal needed to operate the teleprinter.

Finally, you need a teleprinter. In can be a receive only variety as you won't be transmitting. All of the above are available at surplus stores, throughout the country.

As with all Utility DX there is the question of the legality of listening to these stations. But as long as you don't give the information to a third party (such as commercial use) you are safe. RTTY stations will also QSL as long as you obey the general rules for reporting to all Utility stations!

Of course you will not purchase anything without finding out more information. If you have any questions call (201) 566-5021 or write Brad Lanes, 33 Idlebrook Lane, Matawan, NJ 07747

Just imagine, you can copy a RTTY transmission from RCA to Havanna, Cuba and have it QSLedll

Editor Note: For more info you can consult: "RBTY A to Z" published by Cowan Publishing, Pt Washington, NY 11050 for $5.00 ppd (covers basics of RTTY equipment)

"RTTY Handbook" published by Cowan and sells for $3.95 (also covers basics of RTTY)

"Confidential Frequency List" published by Gilfer Assoc..2.0. Box 239 Park Ridge,NJ 07656 sells for ,ÿ3.95ppd (has a list of RTTY stations among the many lists in this book)

Well that's it for another month till next month 73s

Paul

NEWS row that I have that first column under my belt, its all down hill from here

on end things can only get better (hi). Thanks for the support; keen it up!

Concerning this month's loggings, in Europe,Wayne Oliver has received his QSL from RAI confirming Caltanissetta, Sicily as the site for the 6060 KHz outlet.

The special issue "Royal Family" from Radio Nederland has delighted most of its recipients and I have had at least one report saying that Radio Moscow is issuing a new card. More Indonesians are rolling in and Tahiti has finally been heard from by Scott Brown and Larry Rebron. 'ill Flynn and Bill Sparks, after waiting two years, have received cards from Radio Maya in Guatemala. And finally, dx'er Dan Henderson is very pleased with his verie from R. Barlavento, Cape Verde Islands.

OSI POTPOURRI

This potpourri section will include, as space permits, as much QSL info as

I can get my hands on. So if you have anything to offer, please send it

in. I will also include info direct from stations as I receive it.

The first item is from Radio 4VEH, Haiti- In lieu of sending IRC's

for airmail RP, they would prefer 3 U.S. .08e stamps, as they have diffi-

culty redeeming the IRC's. Thank you Radio 4VEH.

Next is this note from R. Finland - We have produced a new series of

QSL-cards for each of the four seasons. Correct reception reports will be

verified in these cards. Thank you, Radio Finland. And finally, this from Bill Trubee- his wife Tomiko picks the more

interesting landscape QSL's and recreates them in 3 by 4 foot paintings;

nowthat's a big QSL! (hi) That's it for this month- 73's and to hear from you,

PLEASE DON'T SQUEEZE THE CHAIRMAN

By Steve Gelfand "'

As a begining DX -er in 1969. I knew nothing about QSL's and corresponding with stations. My primary reason for having a shortwave set at all was bore- dom with the same old stuff on 4M and FM bands.

At least on shortwave, I figured, I can, when I want, hear some more un- usual broadcasts. And it is true because you never know what you might hear. (I mean just once I'd like to hear one of those spies you read about. Just a strange voice saying, "This is X-2...come in Raoul...over..." Or how about that ham in London last year who heard bank robbers communicating with each other on the CB band? Even though he listened to them in the act of robbing a bank for almost two days, the police were never able to locate the right bank! Anyway, it's enough to keep me listening).

As a couple of months passed, I gradually learned about DXing, QSL's, -- SINFO reports and the rest and I began to send out reception reports. When I first heard Radio Peking it was (at the time) my best catch. So why -- shouldn't I send them a reception report? Some of my friends seemed to have good answers like, "You'll be put on an FBI list" (honest guys, until a few months ago I thought Watergate was one of the sea locks on the Panama Canal!) or, "You'll never get a government job if you write to Peking" (I wonder if Kissinger ever wrote to Peking?). But it was too late; the deed was done. I had written to Peking! And lived to tell the tale!!!

A few months later there was a package from Radio Peking in my mailbox. It caused quite a stir in the mailroom of my apartment building, but I casually explained it away by telling everyone that it was only laundered shirts. I think they bought that story.

I opened the envelope and found not shirts, but Peking Review China Recon- structs, a letter thanking me for my letter, a calen air anima príñtea 77: letter asking for my opinions of the magazines.

"I'll show those guys," I thought. "They can't go around mailing me prop- aganda." (And in an almost plain brown envelope vet! I mean it's embarrassing) So on their printed letter, where it said, 'What did you think of our magazine" I wrote, "'.that kind of junk are you sending me? You don't really expect an upstanding American like me to believe any of that nonesense of yours, do -- you? If you do, you're crazy! The only thing you didn't send me was the -- little Red Book!" So much for them!

Well, friends, never let it be said that Radio Peking doesn't read it's mail. In the very next package, there it was - along with the usual magazines the little red book of quotations from Chairman Mao. So, I ask you, what's an imperialist running dog to do?

Now, four years later, I still get a monthly package of laundry... I mean magazines, but I haven't written anymore letters to Radio Peking. I'm not taking any chances of further misinterpretation of my intentions. I don't need any new surprizes in my mailbox.
