Listen to this issue online: www.yhn.org.uk/home/listen_online.aspx

150 years ago most households in Newcastle didnt have inside toilets. 100 years ago not all houses had mains electricity or gas, and more recently not everyone had central heating now we couldnt do without any of these. We believe getting online is just as important. More and more services are being provided electronically and we want to make sure you dont get left behind. If you claim benefi ts such as Housing Benefi t, Jobseekers Allowance or Working Tax Credits, youll soon be expected to manage your claim online.

In this edition we explain why getting online is so important, and how we can help you. Our jargon buster will explain troublesome

technical terms, and tenants tell us how gaining IT skills has helped them get jobs and save money.

For more information visit the Get Switched On page on our website which has lots of information, links and details of training courses and events in your area to help you get online - www.yhn.org.uk/home/get_switched_on.aspx.

Whatever your reason, theres never been a better time to go online and get switched on.

Michael MorrisLead Offi cer, Digital Inclusion and Employability Project Group

What is digital inclusion? For YHN its about making sure you have the best chance of getting online and are taking full advantage of what the internet can offer. Whether youre looking for a job, pursuing a hobby, shopping for a bargain or want to get in touch with family or friends, getting switched on can make your life easier, save you money and open up all sorts of new opportunities.

Over 200 residents of Vale House, a multi-storey block in Jesmond, are benefiting from free internet access in their community room after WiFi and computers were installed by YHN. Residents can pop down to use the computers or bring their own laptops or tablets to access the internet using the free WiFi.

Free internet access at Vale House runs the same as internet access at the citys libraries residents just need a library card to log on and can use the computers for up to two hours a day.

Ian Carmichael, chair of the Vale House Tenants Association, has been heavily involved in making the project happen. Ian said: We wanted to get the computers in so residents could prepare for managing their benefits online knowing how to use a computer and email is going to be essential. Were also keen to start groups including a local history and ancestry group using the computers, and residents can use them for internet banking and to search for jobs and update CVs.

The computers and free WiFi have gone down well with the residents, including Sylvia Rix (left) who uses the internet to keep in touch with her daughter and grandchildren in Australia.

Vale House is a pilot of what we want to do in the long term. Geof Ellingham, YHNs Head of IT, said: Our aim is to deliver free basic internet into every YHN home in the city. We think that internet access should be available like a utility it should be like switching on your water or gas. We know cost is a barrier for lots of people and its our intention to remove that.

    page 4

Vale House residents get online!Sylvia (pictured below) uses Skype, which is a software programme that allows you to make phone and video calls over the internet. If you have friends or family with Skype too, its free to call them, wherever they are in the world.

Sylvia said: Its wonderful being able to talk to my daughter and grandchildren and to see them face to face, especially as they live so far away. Its just lovely to be able to see their faces and have a proper chat, and it doesnt cost anything. My niece and nephew showed me how to get started and now I can do everything on my own. If I didnt know how to email or Skype we would have to rely on letters and expensive phone calls this is a much nicer way of keeping in touch.

Were hoping to run similar schemes offering customers free internet access towards the end of 2014/15 watch this space!

  • Get onlineget a job!

Tony Bannon, from Cruddas Park, is working as a Community Environmental Assistant after learning how to put together a CV and apply for jobs online.

A year ago I didnt know one little bit about computers I didnt even know how to turn one on. Id always worked on building sites so Id never had to use computers. Nowadays you need to be able to use a computer to apply for jobs and I knew I had to do something about it.

I started going to Skills Club which was run by Newcastle Futures. I started a computer training course - I was petrifi ed, Id never used one before and this was all new. It was a big step for me. I had no confi dence but I received so much support. I learnt how to set up my own email address and apply for jobs online, and I got help to put together a CV which I used to apply for jobs.

Thanks to my new skills I was able to apply for a job as a Community Environmental Assistant at YHN and was over the moon to get the job. I get to go out and about, tidy up gardens and communal areas and generally improve the look of estates.

If I hadnt taken the step to learn how to use a computer Id still be stuck in a rut and out of work. Even though the kinds of jobs I want to do dont involve using a computer it was really important I learnt how to apply for jobs online and how to put together a CV. Its improved my confi dence and made a big difference to my life.

Job hunting can be diffi cult, and these days lots of jobs are only advertised online. You could be missing out on lots of great opportunities if youre not confi dent using computers. If your IT skills are a bit rusty, or if youve been in one of the many jobs that hasnt involved sitting behind a desk, the thought of using a computer to apply for jobs can be very daunting.Internet job sites such as the governments Universal Jobmatch website contain thousands of jobs. If youre looking for work its important you know how to search online, especially if you claim Jobseekers Allowance. Your job centre adviser could insist you use Universal Jobmatch to apply for jobs, and if you refuse without good reason, you could lose your benefi t.

Dont worry theres lots of help out there. Even if youve never used a computer before you can fi nd a course that will teach you the basics, as well as ones that will bring you up to speed on offi ce and internet skills.

Here, two YHN customers tell us how brushing up on their computer skills helped them get a job

    page 6

Id still be stuck in a rut and out of work if I hadnt learnt how to use a computer

  • Anthony Mburu, from Walker, completed YHNs Offi ce Admin training course to help develop the right computer skills he needed to get an offi ce job. The course taught him the basics around word processing and spreadsheets and these new skills gave him the confi dence to apply for the jobs he was interested in. Anthony is now working as a Customer Service Advisor at YHNs Walker Community Housing Offi ce. He said:

Id used a computer for the internet and Facebook but I didnt know where to start with things like word processing packages or how to use a computer for work. I was working in a bakery but wanted to get a job in an offi ce so I signed up for the Offi ce Admin course and it was a real eye opener.

The course was really helpful and Id recommend it to anyone who wanted to improve their computer skills to get a job. I developed a much better understanding of Microsoft Word things like formatting, using bold and italics, how to use shortcuts and how to cut and paste. After completing the course I felt like I had the right skills and knowledge to apply for offi ce jobs, and was really happy to be offered the position with YHN.

Im using some of the things I learnt on the course at home now as well as in work. After learning how to use spreadsheets I set up a budgeting spreadsheet to help me keep track of my incomings and outgoings. Before I used a pen and paper to note everything down and would often make mistakes but now I just need to switch on my computer to see how much I have left until I get paid.

The course gave me a lot of confi dence and really improved my computer skills. Learning how to use a computer for work helped me get my job and Im using my new skills in my personal life too.

Smarter shopping how to make savings online

Websites that reward you with cash just for shopping with certain retailers are a great way to save money on your shopping.

    Remember:

Cashback sites pay you a cash reward when you click through from them to buy goods or financial products. And if you use them regularly, the extra money you earn can add up to hundreds of pounds a year.

If youre shopping online, sign up to a cashback website like Quidco or Top Cashback and then search for the online retailer you want to buy from. If that retailer is listed, click the cashback offer link. Your visit is then tracked, so if you buy something youll receive cashback once the transaction is processed.

For example if you bought a pair of trainers for 30 and clicked through using a cashback website that offered 10% cashback, you would receive 3 in your account just for clicking a link. Easy!

Why do cashback websites pay out?

Every time you shop using a cashback website it receives commission from the retailer for generating a sale. As a reward for using their service they then pass this commission back to you, in the form of cashback.

Cashback isnt yours until its in your bank account.

Dont store cash - most cashback sites set a limit which you must reach before you can withdraw cash, its best to withdraw it as soon as you hit that limit.

Make sure its the cheapest deal - dont be swayed by an extra 5% cashback when shopping you might get a cheaper product on another site without the cashback.

Consider clearing your computers cookies - cashback sites track your visits by putting cookies (little bits of info that identify you) onto your computer.

Think of cashback as a bonus its not guaranteed.

You dont get the money instantly it can take a few weeks for the cash to be paid.

    Top cashback sites www.topcashback.co.uk

pays out 101% of the cashback it receives, no annual admin fee, free membership. Cashback available with over 3,800 companies including Amazon, Tesco, Debenhams, Argos, Marks & Spencer, Vodafone and many more.

www.quidco.com 280 average annual cashback per member, voted best cashback site in 2012/13 Consumer Moneyfacts Awards, 3,500 companies available which include Boots, Halfords, Clarks, Dorothy Perkins, Dominos, Hotels.com, and many more.

Online savings stories!YHN customers Pauline and Amanda are experts in saving money using the internet.

Signing up to freebie websites has let me try loads of things for freeAmanda White, from Newbiggin Hall, has received hundreds of free samples by using the internet.

You can save loads of money by using the right websites. Im signed up to a few different websites that send out free samples Ive had washing up liquid, make up, shampoo, books, pensits always nice to get something for nothing! Websites like Savvy Circle, Bzz Agent and Magic Freebies let you try different products for free and pass on reviews. Ive also had coupons for money off things at the supermarket.

If Im shopping online Ill have a look for a discount code or free delivery code to save money before I pay. Everyone loves to make a saving or get something for nothing, and the internet makes that possible. Id definitely encourage people to use the internet to save money, there are so many different sites and theres something for everyone.

Ill be doing my Christmas shopping onlinePauline Urwin, from Walbottle, uses cashback sites and voucher codes to save on her shopping.

It took me a while to cotton on to how much I could save shopping online but Ive saved a fortune and its dead easy. If youre going to buy something you might as well go through a cashback website and get something back for it.

I saved 40 when I was buying my youngest ones pram I found a good deal online then had a voucher code for money off and also free delivery. Ill be doing my Christmas shopping online too and making the most of cashback and voucher codes.

Its really worth doing. Before you pay just open a new tab and search for money off vouchers or free delivery codes or cashback. More often than not youll find something and you can make a saving.

Earn as you learn: apprenticeshipopportunities at YHNAre you unemployed and aged between 16 and 24? YHNs Apprenticeship Programme 2014 is now recruiting and we want to hear from you.Apprenticeships are an excellent way to gain qualifi cations and workplace experience. Youll be employed by YHN for one year and can earn as you learn by gaining practical skills in the workplace whilst studying for nationally recognised qualifi cations at college, including an NVQ level 2.

To be eligible applicants need to be aged between 16 and 24 when the apprenticeship starts, and live in a YHN managed home.

We have a range of opportunities available:

Michael Traynor, who lives in a YHN managed property in Newbiggin Hall, has just started work as an Administrative Assistant in YHNs Furniture Service after completing an apprenticeship.

When I applied for the apprenticeship I was out of work and struggling to get a job. I had lots of experience in catering but I wanted an offi ce job I just didnt have any experience. I applied for the Business Admin apprenticeship at YHN and was really happy to get the job.

The apprenticeship was brilliant. I liked having the responsibility for my own work; I wasnt just photocopying and fi ling all day long, I really got stuck in.

I studied NVQ Level 2 in Business Admin at college one day a week which really backed up the practical experience I was getting at YHN, and when the job came up with NFS I felt I had the right skills to apply. The whole team helped me with the application and interview preparation, and in the interview I could talk about the skills I had gained during my apprenticeship.

I cant explain the feeling when I found out I got the job, I was so happy and excited. Its made a massive difference to how much money I have and Im determined to keep moving forward. My apprenticeship was the best thing Ive done I received so much support and got lots of experience, and, most importantly, a job at the end.

Business Admin Apprenticeship (5 vacancies) youll be supported to develop a range of new skills and experience in a busy offi ce environment.

Housing Apprenticeship (2 vacancies) based in one of our Community Housing Offi ces, youll be equipped with all the skills neededto provide an excellent frontline service to YHN customers.

Customer Service Apprenticeship (1 vacancy) youll be trained to be part of a call handling team that provides emergency help and support to vulnerable YHN customers.

ICT Apprenticeship (1 vacancy) youll help provide ICT support across YHN.

Finance Apprenticeship (1 vacancy) to support the Finance team with the day to day fi nancial requirements of YHN.

I got my job thanks to my apprenticeship

  • Jessica Hannigan is now working as a Customer Service Advisor in YHNs Enquiry Centre after completing an apprenticeship.

I applied for the Customer Service apprenticeship after seeing it advertised on the Apprenticeships website. Id worked in a gym before but fancied a different career. The application process was straightforward and I was really happy to be offered the opportunity and was determined to work hard and impress.

My apprenticeship was in YHNs Enquiry Centre and I worked as part of a team dealing with customer enquiries and making outgoing calls. It was totally different to anything Ive ever done but the support I received from colleagues was fantastic. Both my manager and mentor were really encouraging, I really felt part of the team.

At the same time I worked towards an NVQ Level 2 in Customer Service and received lots of training with the other apprentices at YHN it was great to have others in the same boat as me. We all did telephone training and attended sessions with the Careers Service where we got help with CVs and interview techniques.

The Customer Service Advisor job came up and my mentor encouraged me to apply. This really helped as I knew she believed I could do it. I was really really happy to get the job it was what Id been working towards.

Its brilliant to be a full time member of the team, the apprenticeship really prepared me for it. The biggest difference is the money when I saw my first pay slip I was like, wow! Its made a massive difference to me, I used to live with my granddad and now Ive been able to get my own place. Ive booked a holiday to Tenerife in January which I couldnt have afforded before.

Apprenticeships are really good opportunities, I would recommend them to anyone. Anyone thinking about applying should just go for it just look at me to see what you can achieve.

How to applyYHN apprentices are paid 99.16 per week and work 37 hours per week. To find out more and to request an application pack, contact Newcastle City Learning:

Changes to housing management servicesIn the last edition of Homes & People we told you about a review of the services we offer that are directly affected by the governments benefit changes, including tenancy and estate management, income collection and information, and advice and support.

    Building communities through positive change

The review has concluded that a new approach is needed to help us support customers during challenging times, and at our Board meeting in September, YHN Board agreed. We are going to replace our current housing management service with three specialist functions Housing Options, Income Management, and Tenancy and Estate Management to provide you with a more expert service. This means if you have a question about your rent account youll speak to someone who deals specifically with rent, or if you had concerns about the standard of your estate you would speak to someone who deals with estate management. Rather than dealing with one Housing Officer with general knowledge, youll speak to specialist members of staff depending on what the issues are.

Across the country lots of social housing organisations have switched to this specialist approach and it works well. We think providing more focused services will really benefit you and youll receive a more dedicated and knowledgeable service.

Well be creating bigger teams of staff and were looking to expand our presence in Customer Service Centres where we already have teams. Some offices will be closing but were working hard to ensure the new locations are within easy reach of all customers.

The changes wont take place until April 2014 but well be doing a lot of work between now and then to keep you informed. Well be contacting you in the new year with information on how these changes will work for you.

In the meantime, if you have any comments, questions or queries you can email [email protected] or call 0191 278 8600.

Neil Scott Director of Tenancy Services

Back in July we asked you to vote on a number of projects that aimed to make environmental improvements to estates.

The votes have now been counted and verified and were pleased to announce the results!

We originally asked you to vote on your top five projects from each category that we could deliver in the next 12 months. As we had such an overwhelming response to the projects, weve decided to extend the scheme over two years so that we can deliver even more of the projects!

In total we received over 450 voting forms back thats over 6,000 individual votes. So thank you to everyone who took the time to read the guide and cast their vote.

There were far too many successful projects to fit into this newsletter but you can see them all on our website at www.yhn.org.uk

Although many of the projects put forward got through in round one, we werent able to deliver all of them. Any projects that were unsuccessful this time will automatically get entered in the next round of Youve got the Power planned for 2015.

If you have any questions about the successful projects or arent sure if one you voted for made the shortlist, call 0191 2783842 or email [email protected]
