We are putting on a series of events to lift the spirits, including old style music hall and variety, a classic bus offering tours of the famous Munitions Factory, a stylised WW1 tearoom, great live music, heritage walks, educational workshops and much much more.

Mend & Make Do Saturday 29th August, 11am - 3pmInspired by wartime ‘Mend and Make Do’ ethos, drop into the Devil’s Porridge Museum to chat with crafter Sue Simmons and help us to create a festival rag-rug. Learn the techniques for recycling worn out clothes into eye-catching rugs that furnished a typical wartime home. Admission to museum required.

Lunchtime TalkGallipoli: In their own wordsFriday 28th August, 1.30pm - 2pmJoin Jules Wooding as she brings to life the first-hand accounts of soldiers who fought at Gallipoli in 1915. Using rare photos and letters from the collection of Cumbria’s Museum of Military Life, this talk will offer a unique insight into life during one of World War One’s most hard-fought campaigns.

Saturday 29th August, 11am - 4pmCome along and be transported back in time to the days of cream teas, jumble sales and sing-alongs.

Enjoy homemade refreshments then rummage the clothes rails before sitting down to make some old-school peg dolls and paper planes. Stay on for vintage singer Fiona Harrison, who will sing a selection of wartime classics from 3pm.

Fantastic Family Trees: 10am - 12noonPicture Yourself: 1pm - 3pmArtist and illustrator Ruthie Redden leads two creative workshops for all ages. Explore your roots and discover more about your heritage by creating a decorative family tree illustration to take away.

Picture Yourself invites children to imagine themselves a century ago and create a paper figure as part of a commemorative mural. The more children we have bigger the completed mural will be! All materials provided.

Depicting a typical small house with many period details, information and artefacts showing how families coped whilst the men were away fighting at the Front.

ASC Workshop/Garage and MotortricycleConcentrating on the important work of the Army Service Corps. Their many duties included keeping the troops supplied with food and ammunition, transporting soldiers and equipment in all fields of battle. The lightweight Motortricycle would have been a handy vehicle to call upon for quick transport.

A game for girls?An exhibition about Scottish women’s football from World War One to the present day.Friday 28th August – Saturday 31st October Open 11am – 4pmAnnan Museum, Bank Street, Annan, DG12 6AA

Women’s Association football was first played in Edinburgh in 1881. Although further matches were played in Scotland throughout the 1880s and 90s, it was during World War One that the women’s game was propelled into the public consciousness like never before.

This exhibition looks at the rise, fall and resurrection of Scottish women’s football from the factory teams of World War One to its place on the international sports stage today.
