In the absence of a ir, a spring keeps the valve closed.T h e valve closes au tomatica lly, if :- T he duct overheats, or- T he cockpit trim air valve fails, or- B oth cabin trim air valves fail.T h e ho t- air pressu re -reg ula ting valve remains o pe ra tive, even if eith er th e fo rward or a ftca bin trim a ir va lve fails.

    I TEMPERATURE AND FLOW REGULATION IT emperature regulation is autom atic and controlled by one zone controller and tw o packcontrollers.

    PACK CONTRO LL ERE a ch p ack co ntro lle r re gula te s th e tempera tu re of its a ssocia te d p ack, in a cco rd an ce w itha dem and signal from the zone controller, by m odulating the bypass valve and the ram airin le t flaps.T h e ram a ir in le t fla ps clo se d urin g ta ke off a nd lan din g to a vo id in gestio n o f fo re ig n matter.Note: During takeoff, the ram air inlet flaps close when T O . power is set and-- the main landing gear struts are compressed.

    During landing they close as soon as the main landing gear struts are compressed,as long as speed is at or above 70 knots.They open 20 seconds after the speed drops below 70 knots.

    T he pack controllers also regulate flow by m odulating the associated pack flow controlvalve.

    ZO NE CON TROLLE RPACK FLOW CONTROLT he crew can use the P AC K F LO W selector to adjust the pack flow for the number ofp as sengers and fo r e xte rnal c onditio ns .W hatever the crew selects, the system delivers high flow for any of the follow ingc irc ums tances :- in single-pack operation,- when the A PU is supplying bleed air.T he system delivers norm al flow if the crew selects L O flow and the tem perature dem andcanno t be satis fied.Eng ine p ressu re dem andW hen the cooling dem and in one zone cannot be satisfied, if the bleed pressure is too low ,the zone controller sends a pressure dem and signal to both E n gine Interface U n its ( E IU ) toincrease the m inim um idle and to raise the bleed pressure.APU flow dem andW hen the A P U bleed valve is open, the zone controller signals the A P U 's E lectronic C o ntrolB ox (E C B ) to increase the A P U flow output w hen any zone tem perature dem and cannot besatisfied.

    O PT IM IZED TEM PERA TURE R EG ULATIO NT he zone contro ller optim izes the tem perature by action on the trim air valves.T he tem perature selection range is from 1 8 C (6 4 F ) to 3 0 C (8 6 F ).

    AFT CARGO COMPARTMENT HEAT INGT h e ven tila tion system for th e a ft ca rg o compa rtm ent uses ho t en gine blee d air ( up streamof the packs), m ixing it w ith the ambient cabin air that flows through the cargocompartment.T he cargo regulating valve regulates the pressure of th is hot air supply, and the trim airva lve, which is mod ulated ele ctrically b y the controller, controls th e flo w.T he c arg o p re ssu re re gu la tin g va lve is p neumatic ally o pe ra te d and e le ctric ally c on tro lle dfrom the HO T A IR pushbutton on the C A R G O HE A T panel.T he hot air is contro lled by the cargo trim air valve w hich is m odulated electrically by thecontroller.T he hot a ir is then m ixed w ith air from the cabin and supplied to the cargo com partm entth ro ugh th e ventila tio n in le t is ola tio n va lv e.A c cording to th e temperature sele ctor d emand, the con troller re gu la te s the amoun t of ho tair added by the trim air valve, until the desired tem perature is reached.I f the in let tem perature exceeds 7 0 C , the controller closes the trim air valve.I f th e inlet temperatu re excee ds 8 8 C , the co ntrolle r in terprets th is as a d uct o ve rh ea t an dclo ses the pressure reg ulating valve. T h is valve th en remains clo se d un til the flig ht crewresets the system by pressing the HO T A IR pushbutton - which it cannot do until thetem perature drops below 7 0 C .
