The Luminous Pathway

Light is at the very heart of the Quartier des

Spectacles through the Luminous Pathway,

which connects the various cultural

destinations within the neighbourhood.

Light pours through the pathway

illuminating the area, attracting public

attention to the incredible scene.

The Luminous Pathway has recently taken

an important step in becoming an even

more incredible area, with the illumination of

the Université du Québec à Montréal

(UQAM) design centre and the Grande

Bibliothèque belonging to Bibliothèque et

Archives nationales du Québec (BAnQ).

Brand new permanent video-projection

devices create the potential for designers to

illuminate entire buildings, signifying a real

leap in the creative potential of the

urban-branding project.

By adding these tools to those already

available to Luminous Pathway artists, the

exciting cultural activities taking place

within the buildings can then be enhanced,

as there is now a vast array of new

possibilities for collaboration with

designers who will be able to use high-end

equipment to present digital works that will,

after dark, create artworks on the outside

that are reflections of the exciting cultural

activities going on inside the buildings.

The video-projectors are controlled with

the help of software by Montreal-based

developer VYV, which allows precise

mapping of the front of buildings in high

resolutions, so that the projections offer a

whole new scope for creative design.

“We have just taken a major step. We

believe these permanent outdoor video

projection systems are unique in the world,”

said Mikaël Charpin, Assistant Director and

manager of the Luminous Path for the

Quartier des Spectacles Partnership.

“Creativity is nurtured by innovation, and, in

order to do research and development,

laboratories are needed. When it comes to

architectural illumination in public spaces,

there is no doubt: the Quartier des

Spectacles gives Montreal the best possible

laboratory,” Mr. Charpin added.

“The use of this cutting-edge technology

for the Luminous Pathway allows us to

provide excellent new exhibition
