Box 188, Maryville, MO, 64468 660-562-2424 [email protected] Bearcats’ receiving corps ends spring on high note By JASON LAWRENCE Managing editor Northwest football coach Adam Dorrel said he’s been looking for production out of a youthful receiving corps throughout spring practice, so it was only fitting a young re- ceiver came up big on the final drive of Fri- day night’s Green and White spring game to force a tie. “The No. 1 thing that I felt like we needed to do this spring was try to get some produc- tion from our receivers,” Dorrel said. “We lost so many receivers with (Jason) Jozaites, Bryce (Young), Korey (Jackson), (tight end) Marcus Wright. We lost all those guys, so that was my No. 1 focus.” With the Green squad trailing 14-6, soph- omore quarterback Jonathan Baker stepped under center and fired a pass over the mid- dle where freshman Marquese Surrell out- jumped the safety and sprinted 70 yards, getting stopped just short of the goal line. After a run was stuffed up the middle, and time ran out after the running-clock failed to simulate the late-game situation. However, Baker got one more play and took advan- tage by breaking the goal line on a quarter- back draw. “That was awesome. They’re over there talking crap the whole time and all of a sud- den we make a big play to tie it up at the end,” said senior quarterback Brady Bolles, who started the game for the Green team. “It was great for him, he’s been working hard. … That was awesome to see him come out and make a play.” It appeared the White squad has escaped with a 14-12 victory as freshman corner- back Jack Richards stopped freshman wide receiver Will Garza behind the line of scrim- mage on the two-point attempt. However, the defense lined up offsides, giving Baker one more shot at the tie. Bak- er again took advantage, rolling right and finding Surrell coming across the back of the end zone to force the 14-all tie to end the final spring practice of the year for the Bearcats. “I’ve been coaching football going on 15 or 16 years now and that’s the best spring game I’ve ever been a part of. Northwest splits with Jennies MARYVILLE, Mo. — Northwest’s Ken- dle Schieber threw another gem to lead the Bearcats to a split with MIAA-rival Central Missouri, which currently leads the conference at 15-5, Friday afternoon at Bearcat Field. The junior hurler threw a complete- game, two-hitter in the nightcap, allowing the Bearcats to hold steady in the No. 7 spot in the MIAA standings. The Bearcats went up early, when senior first baseman Stephanie Mark scored on an error in the second inning. Schieber helped her own cause in the sixth inning, singling up the middle to score freshman shortstop Rebecca Maher. The Jennies got their lone run in the top of the seventh when pitcher Jakki Prater homered to center field. The only other hit Schieber surrendered was a sixth-inning single to second baseman Katie Glacone. Schieber struck out 11 and walked none, picking up her eighth win of the season. The two-hitter came on the heels of a 4-1 loss to the Jennies in the series opener. Central Missouri scored three runs in the second inning off junior starter Sarah Baldwin. Right fielder Madison Hood doubled in a pair of runs and shortstop Ali Jo Rogers drove in the third run on a single. Prater, who played second base in the opener, scored on a passed ball in the fifth to give Central (33-13) more than enough insur- ance. Northwest (21-21, 13-9 MIAA) picked up its lone run in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single by Maher, who was 2-for- 4 in the contest. Baldwin threw a complete game, giv- ing up six hits and walking five, while also striking out four Jennies. The Bearcats close out the regular sea- son with a pair of MIAA double-headers next weekend against No. 17 Emporia State and Washburn. The two-game series with Emporia State begins at 2 p.m. Fri- day, April 24 and the regular-season finale begins with a 1 p.m. first pitch Saturday, April 25.
