When Ashley Maids Inc., which Bennett started in 2000, moves to Nanaimo, it will mean new employment possibilities. “We have a feeling we’ll be going downtown,” said Bennett. She’s still viewing possible loca- tions for her company. The company currently employs two in Nanaimo. Once fully operational, Bennett plans to create up to 10 positions, in residential and business cleaning and to staff a call centre. Bennett likes Nanaimo for its central Vancouver Island location. “It’s close to Vancouver,” Bennett said. “It’s a smaller community.” That translates to affordability and freedom from the traffic headaches associated with Van- couver. Bennett said hiring will begin once suitable office space is found. Staff are screened, but Ashley Maids won’t turn down appli- cants from “socially comprom- ised,” backgrounds, often with positive results. “We pay above minimum wage. We try to make our image pol- ished and refined.” Ashley Maids does residential and business cleaning. The com- pany also offers a unique move- out service to help clients recoup damage their deposits after they vacate a rental suite. After cleaning the suite, Ashley Maids will do the walk-through with the landlord. Move-out cleanings are $35 an hour, for a minimum three hours. Walk- through fees are a flat fee of $105. For out-of town service, add a $29.99 hourly transportation fee, plus a $40 gas surcharge. “If somebody is not happy, we go out of our way to make them happy.” Service is available seven days a week, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. To find out more, call Bennett at 778-887- 6243 or email clientcare@ashley- maids.ca. Last year the Bastion Business Network International Group exchanged more than $1 million in referrals, making it the top referral-generating BNI group on Vancouver Island, and the eighth-most successful in B.C. It has 35 members in the group. “That’s a pretty impressive return on investment for your annual club dues,” said Bastion BNI’s outgoing president Murray Renner. The BNI’s rules disallow more than one member from each business. “If there already is an agent member, there cannot be another agent,” Renner said. “This way we can have the wid- est possible range of business people, without group members being in competition with each other.” The Nanaimo group is “proud of our achievements,” said BNI president Camille LaBonte. The Bastion BNI group, which is one of two in Nanaimo, recent- ly moved its monthly meetings from a north Nanaimo restau- rant to the Nanaimo Golf Club. “We’re hoping that with a new, more spacious venue, we’ll see an expansion of our member- ship,” Renner said.
